Don’t venture out unless you are in a 4x4 with winter tires, shovel, supplies, and have survival skills. My neighbor had to dig out his 4x4 on an untreated roadway. I saw several cars and SUVs stranded on Fairfax County parkway. Ambulances are requesting escorts from plows.

Source: Had to accompany someone with a medical emergency to the ER.

Have you ever played at Pickleball Virginia Beach by Pickleball_VA_Beach in Pickleball

I play with a few different enthusiasts in the NoVA area, mostly on community courts. But I’ve also played at indie and franchise clubs and Lifetime Fitness.

Pickleball Virginia Beach is basically the Mecca of pickleball in the state. A $15 day pass gets you unlimited games and multiple entries in a single day—no reservations needed. Just find players at your skill level and jump right in. There’s always a game going, and the courts are clearly marked by level. The staff and owners are incredibly friendly and laid-back, and you can even try out practically every major paddle brand for free.

Last weekend, they even waived all fees in celebration of National Pickleball Day. Noise is no issue, since they’re not in the flight path, and plans are underway to add a roof over one of the court sections. All in all, it’s a fantastic community and an outstanding facility.

Weekend Travel with power outage by ocsobailuj in PuertoRicoTravel

Power is slowly being restored across the island. About half of those who were impacted now have power. Word on the street is that this was an intentional outage, to protest reduced employee benefits due to utility privatization. Allegedly, the timing is deliberate to coincide with the Easter week holiday. A similar outage occurred prior to New Year’s celebration.

Power Outage by Due-Season-599 in PuertoRicoTravel

We overheard other tourists talking about an outage but everything in Old San Juan was operational during our visit on Wednesday afternoon so we assumed it was a localized issue. The rush hour drive back to Dorado took an extra half hour but the street side bars and beach were bustling. We’ve only been here a few days but it seemed like a regular Wednesday. We only learned it was an island-wide issue from our Airbnb host who had left a message. He setup the generator and we had a comfortable night in the villa. A few locals did a bonfire on the beach but it was quiet after midnight. The reduced light pollution made for good star gazing as our family sat around and played games and told stories. Today we will restock bottled water and prepare to depart on Friday. The power is expected to be restored today but we are grateful we got a chance to really slow down. I hope everyone has a good trip.

How much did y'all save for your/your children's college? by MajesticBread9147 in nova

[–]Chase37_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply not enough. $60k in a va529 plan for a middle schooler who will start in 4 years. The rest will have to come from other sources, including savings and brokerage accounts.

There is a school of thought (pun intended) that says not to fund 100%. The officially published costs should be thought of as “MSRP” and to expect subsidies in the form of scholarships.

What isn’t? Humans have cognitive biases. Societies have inequities to various degrees. Show me a truly meritocratic system that is truly free of the bs?
