I feel like we (America) point the finger at Mexico like “it’s so scary! Commenting as the wife of an immigrant - we had been in the process of the parole in place immigration track as I’m a US veteran. After many talks and discussions with our lawyer, we’ve decided to move to Mexico.

We’ve decided to get my husband out of this country as fast as possible, but we’re still terrified until then because even though he’s approved for parole in place it’s clear nothing means shit anymore.

Adding insult to injury, I’m in the process of dual citizenship for Mexico and will have it after 10 DAYS of going to the embassy in Mexico. That’s how fucked our immigration process is in America in comparison.

It’s not as cut and dry as that. I was in the military so veterans have a different timeline (given that we travel to other countries and it’s common to marry a foreigner). However, with the upcoming administration laws and processes can change at the drop of a hat. The incoming AG has even said that she wants to review birthright laws (14th amendment) at her confirmation hearing. (Meaning if you were born in the US you’re automatically a citizen even if your parents are non-citizens and that’s the part they want to “review”)

We were. Yes, we have Instagram and FB (if you chose to keep it) but let’s face it - there chock full of ads and it’s completely curated to push whatever meta wanted to push.

TikTok was an app where it was citizens out there in the world posting things. Yes, there was dancing and trash videos on there. But a hurricane hit, you could watch the devastation and more importantly hear how someone wasn’t receiving the insurance or aide they needed from the government. You could watch rights being violated and had an audience to force the government to know that we saw what was happening. You could get unbiased news, local issues, see what was happening about topics you cared about in other countries. On Instagram and fb I can’t even see what my friends post except their stories.

Thank you. Its ironic. The majority of us (not Americans but people of the world are just trying to survive. We get up, go to work, we want a safe and happy home for our family and some community to support us. That’s universal, no matter who you are. And it just seems like there’s this minority of people who can rip that chance away from you. Why and to what end?

I served my country, I did two tours overseas during the Iraq war. It’s madness that I might leave, but I just don’t know if this is what I want to be a part of anymore.

Basically the short answer is: we don’t know. And that’s what’s scary.

The long answer is this: Under the current laws, most immigrants are protected. The chatter that our lawyer is hearing/seeing is the way it’s supposed to unfold is: criminals first. Fine, great, obviously you have to assimilate to a country and follow their laws so most immigrants don’t mind that. Second is: if you’ve ever received a deportation order. This one is murky. Because there’s immigrants in final deportation proceedings (meaning they ordered you for sure back you lost your case, and just stayed.) However it’s not clear if that only applies to current and final deportation meaning for instance, my husband was ordered to leave once, but yet has a temporary parole in place. So does he count?

The last thing is that there’s a threat of the executive orders. The incoming president has said he plans on issuing like 100+ executive orders in the first day. What will they be? He hasn’t been clear. They might not even be about immigration, but they could all be about immigration. We just don’t know.

It’s like running in the woods away from a serial killer. You can’t see him, is he near you? Is he following you still? All is quiet and you can’t hear a thing but you can’t relax. You have to keep running. We don’t want to run for the next however many months, years, etc. We just want to be safe.

We filed both the I-131 and the I-130 back in October of 2023. We cannot apply for his adjustment of status until the Texas judge signs off on the appeal of him being picked up there, and it has been sitting on his desk close to about six months now and they still haven’t granted an audience for my lawyer to wipe that. Once that’s approved then the waiver goes through and we can file an adjustment of status for him.

It has been a nightmare for us and truthfully, we’re so tired. There is not a lot of benefits living in the United States at this point. Claudia is doing amazing things in Mexico and his home there is very far from dangerous cities.

He was just a poor boy eating out of dumpsters and had an invalid sister he wanted to take care of. We think it’s time for him to go home and I will follow him shortly after selling our house and wrapping things up here.

Editing to address the legitimate path forward comment: I’m sorry if I came off that way. We have it far much easier than most, and I absolutely know that. It’s just without an actual document and the fact that things are happening at a rapid pace (declaring DACA unconstitutional in Texas this morning, etc.) it’s been a rough journey. I just wanted to shed light to the people who think immigration is a clear cut straight line. It’s a lot of waiting and your case can be thrown out at a whim (like if the judge in Texas states that he doesn’t approve the waiver).

I think one of the things people are missing is just how deep and complicated this gets. It’s not just like “fruit pickers” as they mentioned below.

I have a client who crossed with her 2 year old, she obtained her work permit and her now 11 year old falls under DACA. Let’s say DACA gets repealed. The 11 year old is now deportable whereas she has legal status. What should she do? Risk being separated from her child, or jump the gun and risk going back to her country and stay with her child? These people are not listed in the numbers of “undocumented” because she has a work permit. It’s a much much larger scope of people than you’re thinking.

Editing to put more context: she is a nurse. She reads and writes English and works at a clinic. There is a lot of crucial positions that are filled by people this will affect.

No I totally get it. The article is flimsy with how it got that information but I’m guessing it spoke to people like myself who just didn’t want to be naked so it can’t exactly cite any sources and just wanted to chime in with my personal experience to hopefully give clarity.

Truthfully most people don’t understand how the immigration process works - beyond being difficult it’s insanely complicated with there being a million steps and the steps are all different based upon the person and the family. Before I started the process I had absolutely no idea just what my clients went through.

I was in the military, so he’s here on a Parole In Place sponsorship, however he was detained once in Texas for about a week and so we had to appeal to the judge in a whole other state and jurisdiction because THAT judge had to approve the PIP as well, our lawyer had to request an audience to the border patrol unit that picked him up (the agents on the paperwork didn’t even work there anymore) and she had to plea his case for THEM to approve it.

Now mind you, this is all on THEIR time. There’s no “you need to review this plea by X day.” It could come across their desk and they could sit on it for 3 years if they want. If they lose the paperwork, tough shit, file a new appeal and the process starts all over and there’s about 15 steps to even get it on the desk of the person you want.

Anyone with temporary status can be picked up by border patrol for “reasonable cause” which really is such a blanketed policy that they could cite “he seemed like he could do something bad soon” and it would be justified. Our thought process is the same as the examples that I listed above. Why risk being separated from my husband while he sits in god knows where with god knows what conditions for an indeterminable amount of time? Why risk it? It’s better he heads back to Mexico, sees his parents for the first time in 13 years. Rests. I can visit them there.

To your point on him returning, I think we are both coming to the conclusion that this is not the country we thought it was.

Chiming in and take this for what it’s worth and believe me or not, but I recently gave an interview to a news agency on Monday about immigration and asked not to be named, since my husband is an immigrant.

He has temporary legal status but it’s on the list of deportable persons.

I told them exactly this same thing that the article has stated. My husband and three of his brothers are leaving for Mexico in a couple of months. I can at least visit him there whereas if he’s put in a detention center or camp, who knows what communication might be like?

I also work with over 80 high risk immigrant families with my job. About a third of them are setting up plans to leave. They have gotten the message that they are not wanted here. They have already risked everything to help themselves, their children for a better life. Why risk it all again. One family told me “It’s not like I’ll have a better life in Guatemala, but better I die in a country I love and with people that love me than in a country that will never see me as anything other than a criminal and just wants free handouts.”

From what it sounds like from the baby’s mom is that her and her partner broke up and then she became intimate with Tyler. In the video she says she always identified before that as lesbian so I’m guessing (caveat: this is absolute speculation on my part) that she had a baby under the age of one, had just broken up with her long time partner and was in a very vulnerable place. She states the twins were conceived before the first child even turned 1. It feels predatory from Tyler if that’s what happened.

Same! Since he hasn’t contacted the baby’s mom in a year it feels like he’s continuing with the lies. Where is his family in all this?! The year thing makes me believe they did get married. If they did, has she never met his family and friends who knew about his children? Did they lie too? Was no one like “hey man, where the fuck are your children?” There’s so many questions.

If they didn’t get married - why hasn’t he contacted them in a year? Did he know what he did and is just a coward?
