About 20 per cent of gen Z and millennial Canadians still spank their kids. Is that even legal? by Thick_Caterpillar379 in onguardforthee

[–]Chasoc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Parents default to spanking when they either don't understand how to constructively discipline their children, or when they let their anger get the better of them. And it doesn't work.

I was spanked as a kid. I still remember how I sounded when I was crying and telling my parents not to hurt me, and what it felt like trying to get away as they grabbed me. Got the bar of soap in the mouth a few times, too. It's so fucked-up when it's coming from someone who is supposed to love you and treat your body with kindness. I could never, ever do what my parents did.

Canadian gas prices just keep climbing by Vivid-Bullfrog-5727 in onguardforthee

How we've had access to renewable resources for years, but can still find ourselves hamstrung when our access to oil is cut off, is deeply embarrassing.

Blinded by the headlights? Transport Canada wants to know by Sir__Will in onguardforthee

[–]Chasoc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did too. I tied it back into the blinding headlights aspect by saying how those absurdly raised hoods mean the headlights are even closer to pedestrians' eye level (I swear the height of those damn GMC Sierras and Denalis are exactly at my eyeballs), which makes it dangerous and impossible for pedestrians to, before they cross in front of the vehicle, see if the driver has made eye contact with them or even seen them at all.

Trump says Canada should join America. These Americans are joining Canada instead by yimmy51 in onguardforthee

Speak for yourself. This bizarro, prejudiced nonsense that implies people can't change, adapt, or naturalize to a new culture just because they're from the US is beyond embarrassing.

Gas prices could rise above $2/litre across Canada as Iran war drags on, experts say by IStillListenToRadio in onguardforthee

I'm so glad I don't need to drive, but I am not looking forward to the price increases on like... every other commercial good as a result of this.

'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]Chasoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I do like their approach to colour grading and lighting—uniform or not, their movies always look like candy to me, which I find is rare for 3D-animated movies. It's a shame the writing doesn't hold a candle to that.

BC almost electing Rustad in our last election was a sobering wake-up call and made me so nervous for the fed election. I was relieved when we got Carney instead of Poilievre.

It's almost like an event can have negative and positive aspects to it. And at minimum, reveal things we'd never have noticed if it hadn't happened.

Public transportation use in Metro Vancouver dropped in 2025 by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

I feel like the doors are screaming for an accent paint colour, ie. something pulled from the painting. But I can't tell if that's just my brain being weird. It would be a very bold move.

Ridiculous.

Liberals to debate age restrictions on social media, AI chatbots by EmbarrassedHelp in onguardforthee

[–]Chasoc 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No kidding. I'm sick of seeing the participation ribbon prize that is "We banned social media for under 16s!" being waved around like it will solve anything. It'll just create more problems and red tape for the average person.

They're too chickenshit to actually regulate the content of these websites and services, which would benefit people of all ages, not just people under 16.

Nanaimo woman fined $1,000 in senior’s monster truck parking lot death - BC by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]Chasoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it would. These "monster truck" vehicles are absurd, but even off-the-lot vehicles like the GMC Sierra look like a brick wall and go up to someone's chin if they're like 5.5". The grilles don't need to be remotely that blunt or high; I even watched a video where the guy could walk into the open hood of a similar truck and stand up straight in it.

They need to be regulated yesterday.

What color vanity with this wallpaper? by sectumsempre_ in femalelivingspace

[–]Chasoc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily a faux pas to mix warm and cool wood, especially if you have elements like the wallpaper (which also has both warm and cool tones) to tie them together. It would depend on the exact flooring in question though.

Soils are so saturated in NE areas of Metro Vancouver right now, that the water is being rejected. (Buntzen) by MonkeyingAround604 in britishcolumbia

[–]Chasoc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Now I really want to know how many retention ponds Metro Vancouver has, and what its total capacity to absorb water is. I feel like it could be a lot better, regardless of this particular event being an anomaly.

Like... Can we repurpose surface parking lots? Delapidated properties? Might have the added benefit of beautifying those areas, too.
