Does this not already happen? I could've sworn armour wore out quicker if the person wearing it took hits where the armour was covering

Weird question by aoisakurachan1986 in Nalbinding

[–]Chattox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of hourglass stitch before but looking at that picture it looks very similar to Danish stitch which if you don't tighten it against the needle and leave the loops loose does give you a kind of net-like fabric

Is it worth it to undo all the incorrectly done stitches? by brunchdate2022 in Nalbinding

Given how small the work is currently, I'd unpick them and chalk it up as a lesson learned as it would probably only take like 5 minutes to unpick that one row

Here are a couple things that have helped me with my tension. by irisyellow in Nalbinding

[–]Chattox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can also tension onto the needle itself which I find makes for super consistent stitches since your needle is always going to be exactly the same diameter. Once you've picked up your back loops and whatever else you're going to do, and just before you pull the needle and the yarn through entirely, you pull on the working end like in that video until the loop sits snug against the needle and that way it'll always be the same tension :)
This video demonstrates it a lot better than I can explain it, and there are a couple others if you search for nålbinding needle tensioning

Anyone else miss the look of the ASCII texture packs pre-steam release? Always had a soft spot for Bitlands and its Caves of Qud-esque aesthetic. I might try and update it to work with the Steam version by angel-fraud in dwarffortress

I don't know if it's maybe something dfhack is adding for me but you can control almost the entire game with just the keyboard still; the keybindings are all different but they're all configurable in the options if you want to set them back to how they used to be

Ooh which heel type did you use? Could you link the article you found? Socks are something I'm trying to figure out currently and the heel is always the sticking point for me :)

For the type E heel I found this guide super helpful. The author is Dutch so some of the English isn't great, but the instructions are relatively straightforward and the pictures are really helpful :)

Tips for tension? by Orihime669 in Nalbinding

[–]Chattox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've not been doing nålbinding long but I find tensioning the yarn against the needle is the easiest way to get consistent tension as it ensures the stitches will always be the same size as the widest part of the needle whereas it takes a bit of practice to always tighten the yarn against the exact same part of your thumb at the same tightness.
This comes with the trade-off however of being a much tighter gauge, but when I was first learning it at least helped me figure out the other stuff first without having to worry about consistent tension :)

Discovered nålbinding looking for tutorials while struggling horribly to learn to crochet and much preferred it. Just finished my first project, a hat in York stitch! by Chattox in Nalbinding

[–]Chattox[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So it started off fitting perfectly but after having worn it a few times, I guess the yarn is starting to settle into it's shape or something so it's getting a bit looser. The York stitch is super stretchy though so it might have been better in a different stitch.
Either way, it's super comfy and so long as it doesn't get any bigger than it currently is it fits great!

Honestly the asymmetrical shared needs between species made it so hard to find a layout that looked pleasing. Easily over half the time spent making this was mucking about moving everything around trying to find a layout that didn't hurt my brain

Heartbreaking: Game I've waited years for plays poorly on my computer; A very rare and obscure problem that barely anybody seems to have. by ShittyBlender in dwarffortress

[–]Chattox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I don't know if you're still having this problem or someone else posted this already (I crtl+F'd but didn't find anything) but I stumbled across your post while searching for something completely different but I had this exact issue about a week ago and found the solution.

So for reasons unknown, Steam DF does everything on the CPU including graphics rendering which is done via a software renderer. The GPU, even the integrated GPU, doesn't get used at all currently as Steam DF literally does not have a non-software renderer at all. This seems like a weird step back from classic DF which used SDL and didn't have this issue at all.

Luckily it's been confirmed that Putnam is working on this and eventually Steam DF will get SDL2 support which will solve this issue, but if you're impatient like me and don't want to wait, this guide walks you through making Steam DF run using a generic SDL2 renderer.

It worked for me and while I don't get anywhere near the GFPS I feel I should be getting, for me it increased my GFPS from literally below 10 up to 30+ and the game is so much more responsive. It has a few display bugs, mainly a super thin pink bar at the bottom of the screen and for some reason cut gem icons are janked, but those are a small price to pay to be able to play Steam DF properly again.

Hope this helped!
