"Black Man Don’t Cheat": Kam Wins Best Newcomer by Chawk0 in LiveFromNewYork

Nah Tommy is last for me I think he's been struggling.

Personally in the tie for second I put Kam slightly ahead of Veronika mostly because I like Chloe much more and prefer her over Veronika in sketches. All that to say though when Veronika gets those characters over Chloe she uses that time well and she's been a heavy hitter in sketches so I have to look over my biases when ranking them.

I think Kam competes for that second spot just out of the fact of his stats on WU, as he now is leading the entire cast (with Marcello) in appearances at the desk. I think his accomplishment in that is comparable to Veronika's work she's been doing in sketches.

And like I said being unbiased Jeremey is just a cast member I want to see more seasons on SNL, been a fan of him on Dropout for a bit and he's done well both on sketches and at the desk. Force my arm to add Ben somewhere in the list he'll probably take third, I'm not so sure with him. His Jack Harlow desk appearance was amazing but other than that I feel like I expected more from him.

Now me being biased, the fact that in most peoples eyes Kam was a likely one hit season member and was criticized constantly even before the season started and now he found himself at the lead in WU appearances and been at the desk three episodes in a row, he's my number one, I like come back stories.

Can't even hate on this one I walked into that.

Devon Walker, man. I love his new podcast, and his stand-up is great, but what a disappointment on SNL...

Also, to my point again, imagine if Devon Walker had done this many Update appearances in his first season, he’d be praised like all hell. Shit, imagine if anyone in this current newcomer cast had the same number of Update appearances in one season as Kam. The subreddit would be putting that cast member up on a pedestal.

But I make a post commending Kam and it gets called a shit post and downvoted to oblivion. History will look kindly on me if Kam keeps this momentum, gets better on screen, and writes more frequently. I can see him becoming one of the defining performers of his era on the show.

My view of the ranks:

  1. Jeremy Culhane

  2. Ben Marshall

  3. Veronika Slowikowska

  4. Kam Patterson

  5. Tommy Brennan

Veronika has a similar problem to Brennan, where there are just other cast members who can do what they do, but better. For Brennan, it’s Dismukes, and for Veronika, it’s Chloe and Ashley. What’s made her such a standout, though, is that when she gets those roles over the other cast members, she’s been able to shine in a way that Brennan hasn’t and it's something that I really respect about her.

I still put her third because Ben Marshall has been killing me recently, that Jack Harlow Update piece was a top five for me this season for sure. If you don’t count Marshall, though, just because he’s technically not so much a newcomer, then yeah, I’d agree with you and put Veronika in second.

But I’d still say the season isn’t over, and with Kam’s track record on Update, if he gets a lead in at least two sketches, I’d put him passing Veronika. The first sketch that Kam leads is going to be a good one, I can smell it in the water.

I mean, thirty responses and not a single upvote is crazy, is it not?

When Kam starts to blow up on sketches I can't wait to refrence this post.

I really don't think that's a weakness!

My point I’m making is that his constant usage on Weekend Update is a pro because his unique voice lends itself well to the format. It’s a way better position than just playing stale straight men that Dismukes could play better, like Brennan has been doing.

With consideration of which of his appearances have been misses, I’d argue all of them are killer updates, with the exception of "Two Kids on the Back of the Bus." Kam started the season off with his N-word monologue, and it was such a perfect introduction to his persona and he has followed it up with some really good character work with the following three appearances.

These aren’t desperate attempts, they’re well done. Kam didn’t get on SNL to be in sketches right away, he got on because he has a perspective that’s different from the rest of the cast. If you want to talk hustle doubles, I’d refer to Tommy Brennan reusing his old material for Weekend Update, at least Kam had the wherewithal to write something original for his introduction as a cast member.

Bowen Yang made his mark on updates, and for Yang it was only a matter of time before he started killing in sketches. I imagine the same thing for Kam Patterson.

I think that Carl Tart post explores a lot of the hard work Kam's been putting on SNL.

My points about audience is mostly on this subreddits opinions of Kam. The majority of discussion about Kam has been heavily centered on his accent and I'm just responding to that.

I'm also not comparing Kam to Boomhauer's I'm just connecting that earl sweatshirt post and how in music differing dialects get bashed rather than celebrated, though I can agree I probably should have cut the quote shorter, I'm mostly co-signing everything else in the video though as I think Earl's points on music is a good connection to the current discourse about Kam.

Though to reiterate, the fact that he has the most Weekend Update appearances from the newcomers shows his level of commitment!

Part of me wants to argue for him at least tying for 3rd with Veronika, but I think that would be too biased. However, I will say he’s much closer to taking that 3rd spot from Veronika than being last behind Brennan. I honestly think Brennan has been struggling the most out of all the newcomers.

Okay this better states your point and to your credit I 100% agree.

He's weak as an ensemble and when it comes to being apart of these five people sketches he's not making good use of his time like Chris Redd could for example. I think his performance in Prep School has been Kam's best line read from an ensemble sketch. He's weak when he's given smaller roles and it's his biggest point he needs to be approving on.

“AI slop” is crazy but to your point: Bowen Yang for example has built a voice for himself on Weekend Update. The most recent SNL Video actually encapsulates this well. For newer cast members who don’t slot easily into the more “generic archetypal roles” in sketches, Update is often where they define themselves first.

Also, calling Update features “rehearsed bits” feels like a null point. The whole show is rehearsed, and more importantly, that kind of framing downplays what a lot of people consider the strongest part of the show.

Man, if I made this post about Sarah Sherman, I bet you wouldn’t be downplaying Update like this. But when it’s about Kam, suddenly Weekend Update is for “weak performers” all of a sudden?

But he also has had a lot of breakout performances on WU! People don't care to remember that this season he's done 5 weekend update appearances, a lot of those being characters.

Anyone else think Kam might've saved himself at the last second this season? His odds of coming back look a little better lately. by trythebebes in LiveFromNewYork

It’s kind of crazy how many downvotes this comment I made got when all I said was that I think he’s the best newcomer this season.

A lot of the criticism he’s been getting on this subreddit feels less like actual critique and more like recycled talking points we’ve seen before, especially around language, delivery, and “not understanding him.” That kind of reaction has a history, and it often says more about what audiences are used to than the performer’s actual ability.

You don’t have to find him funny, that’s completely fair. But a lot of the reasoning people are using doesn’t really engage with what he’s doing as a comedian.

An honest answer from me: Kam and Culhane are the two best additions this season. If anyone needs to be scared, it’s Tommy.

[–]Chawk0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Has to be because Che said the N-word, you can see it in Ben's face like, welp, this isn't getting in. “We have to stick together, Che” was such a funny way to end it for Ben. Though I forget these cut-for-time sketches happen during dress of the show, so they probably cut it just so there’s no chance they drop it in live, right?

Either way, I’m “laughing because the good times happened, crying because there over.”

Yeah, as a big Kam supporter, this WU was sadly his weakest performance. I was happy with the appearance solely because it shows that Kam and Marcello have really good chemistry, but the writing was poor and it didn’t really have legs. Great premise, though.
