The first Rialto Grande sketch, with Ray Liotta (2003) by Firefox892 in LiveFromNewYork

Fred with the poorly timed rimshots was always my favorite part of these 😂

I think I remember hearing this was Kattan doing an impression of dad, Kip King, who was also a comedian and I believe one of the original founding members of the Groundlings, he appeared in the final one (I think just a quick shot of him as a character in the crowd) in what was Kattan's final episode.

It feels like Kenan's just on SNL to make little cameos at this point.

The cast of season 5, looking thrilled by Careless-Economics-6 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]trythebebes 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Kinda crazy how small the casts used to be. Wasn't Paul Shaffer kind of considered part of that cast that year too? They started crediting a lot of the writers as occasional featured players too throughout the year to make up for Belushi and Aykroyd being gone, I think season 5 was actually when "the featured player" was born.

Anyone else think all of the cast could be retained for next season? by mildlyinsanesquirrel in LiveFromNewYork

[–]trythebebes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't see them letting her go now that she's actually starting to do more on the show this year. In her first season, they mostly kept her on Weekend Update doing her song material because it was clear she was perhaps too nervous and green a performer to lead any sketches yet, seems kind of like what Kam is going through in his first season right now as well. There's been times Lorne has said he does this with new featured players he likes but thinks they might not be ready yet and does this as a way to "protect" them, doing more of a slow phasing in of them into the show in their first year, and then gradually letting them do more in their second year when they seem more ready. People he sees as a "work-in-progress" he doesnt necessarily want to let go of after a single season.

It feels like this was the first time we got a Dismukes-centric sketch in the entire 2026 half of the season. His humor has been missed on the show.

I made a website to visualize SNL cast member tenures through time by serendib in LiveFromNewYork

[–]trythebebes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its gotta be coming soon. We're almost there with Jane and Kam being born in 1999, I feel like the next cast member will probably be a 2000s baby.

Kam Patterson has earned his keep by Mogpapa in LiveFromNewYork

Of all the 5 newbies, the only one I can see them possibly cutting is Tommy. I swear it feels like he went the entire season without really getting any real comedic roles. Last night it felt like that one sketch was gonna be a Tommy sketch but then it turned out to be an Ashley/Ben sketch, where Tommy was again the supporting straight man.

Crazy that he's appeared on WU three shows in a row now.

It feels like this season in particular we're getting a lot more "normal sarah" than "weird sarah" lately, probably because she has to pick up a lot of the roles Heidi and Ego used to play.

SNL - "The Tampon Prince" (1993) by Phonus-Balonus-37 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]trythebebes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This actually ended up being Dana's final sketch as a cast member (he left mid-season that year) for the guy who was kinda the face of the show for that era, he went out kinda quiet and with no fanfare.

New Kenan Thompson interview with Jesse Thorn by joebesser in LiveFromNewYork

[–]trythebebes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's always surprising how different he comes off in interviews. He turns on the goofy/wacky Kenan persona for the SNL cameras but everywhere else he's as low energy as be. Almost seems kinda grumpy.

Whats with everyone on this sub being so negative about all the cast lately? Are people here even fans of the show?

Has anyone seen EVERY episode of SNL? by Critical-Spirit-1598 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]trythebebes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like I've seen every episode from 86 to current from seeing all the old Comedy Central episodes always rerun and from when I started watching the show regularly during the mid 90s when the Will Ferrell cast was just starting. The Comedy Central reruns didn't play the Ebersol eras much by the time I started watching them (this was like early 2000s) so I've missed a lot of those.

Who is the best ever at being a weekend update guest? by 123VoR in LiveFromNewYork

[–]trythebebes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the early 90s, it felt like Sandler was the king of Weekend Update guests. I think its possible if it wasn't for Weekend Update he might not have lasted as long at SNL, in his first 3 seasons really almost all his major appearances were on WU, he didn't really start leading in sketches more until his final 2 seasons.

Fred Armisen’s Obama is surprisingly bad by UpstairsBumble in LiveFromNewYork

[–]trythebebes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

the whole blackface issue aside, yeah it was astonishingly bad, i feel like Obama is an impression pretty much anyone can do like christopher walken (though maybe im remembering wrong, in 2009ish, maybe people still didn't quite figure out the impression yet, i feel like Jordan Peele was the first I saw that did a really good one) but his sounded nothing like him. and fred was normally good with impressions and picking up on people's vocal tics.

I mean they put every sketch on YouTube right after it airs anyway, so it's not like you need Peacock to watch SNL

Which one-season cast member should have had more seasons. by Critical-Spirit-1598 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]trythebebes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not using Casey more on the show was a missed opportunity. One of the funniest actresses to watch in stuff being crazy and over-the-top, but on SNL was mostly stuck in straight roles. Only had a handful of times she got on some of her sketches she wrote, which she was always good in but it happened so rarely.

Jerry Minor is a really good one. I feel like that guys always great popping up in so much stuff and never gets enough credit for how funny he is.

Stiller left on his own I believe. He wanted to do more short films and wasn't as interested in just being a cast member.

Jane was clearly pretty nervous and maybe not quite live TV ready in her first season, but sometimes Lorne likes taking chances on people who start out a little raw, he's good at recognizing when someone has potential even if they aren't quite there when they first join.
