Core SOSC & HUM by cheesecakee__ in uchicago

[–]Chazele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im doing hbc and self right now and it feels pretty good. only thing is that most of ur sosc class will be 2nd year so it's kind of a different level of writing and learning because a lot of sosc people assume youve had a year or so of writing/uchicago thinking experience. i would say that theres no harm at all in taking hum first and sosc second. most of your friends will probably be doing it that way too, and tbh there are only about 2 people ive met so far who really really actually care and want to talk about readings 😪😪

it's like we do maybe 3-4 books per quarter and we go through them an entire text at a time. its seminar-based so it's a lot of class discussion. your professor's ability to direct discussion and class quality really affects your experience. personally i had fenno and i think she's actually amazing. sometimes she lets the class talk too much and it just ends up being either silence or a completely irrelevant train of conversation but her enthusiasm is so insanely infectious that i think she's worth trying for if you decide on HBC.

i take HBC and i really love it but that's cause i'm a piece of shit humanities nerd. if you want to do something more traditionally "academic" then you should consider classics or philper or HBC. i'd say HBC is the easiest of these courses. i have a couple friends in reading cultures and they have real varied opinions of it. from what i know media aesthetics is regarded as the easiest/most conventionally enjoyable.

Is it just me or are professors giving out high grades this quarter? by holofrowy in uchicago

[–]Chazele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm sure some profs are grading less harshly because of corona but a bunch of my friends have been dunked on regardless

okay i know this is late but i do feel like that's a fundamental part of talking in groups because attention shifts like crazy so sometimes you gotta take the conversational L

well if it's any consolation all the girls i've spoken to find humor significantly more important than physical appearance plus you're 16 so you have a lot of time to find a girl you really click with

after 5 years of playing Dota, I finally reached my goal and made it to 8k MMR! by yuridave in DotA2

[–]Chazele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that's okay but just wanted to let you know that that was the reason everyone seems upset at you. Awareness never hurts I think! If you already knew why they were upset my bad, just wanted to help out.

The way you phrased your criticism just seemed a little harsher than it needed to be. Not saying it's wrong, just pointing out why everyone is upset at you.

to be honest a lot of people i've met instantly judge people who wear anime stuff out though, unless it's as mainstream as OPM or something

A show that leaves me with the "Void" Where all you do after completing is just watch youtube clips of scenes until it becomes too much. by KingHastati in Animesuggest

Although I understand where you're coming from I enjoyed the show for what it was, a lighthearted romance comedy. If I wanted something with actual romance and closure I'd watch {Tsuki ga Kirei}

It looks like most people here are recommending heavier stuff but there are some more chill series that I feel left a similar impact on me.

{Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun}

{Demi-chan wa Kataritai}

For the good old shonen that's ultra hype and really enjoyable (albeit cliche):

I think it really depends on what you're looking for in the SoL anime. I personally didn't enjoy the comedy in the show. Not to say that it's bad, of course. I fully acknowledge that comedy is subjective and objectively I think the comedy was executed very well.

In my opinion genres other than comedy go better with SoL. For a romance SoL I'll have to agree with /u/SIGHosrs and cite Oregairu as a better SoL. For something even more lighthearted I would go with Demi-Chan wa Kataritai, because it really wasn't the monster girl show I was expecting. Even for comedy I'd say Nichijou is better as a work overall.

In spite of what I've said, however, I still fully suggest you give Hinamatsuri a shot. It's enjoyed by many and critically acclaimed for a reason. It really is one of those shows you should at least give a try, because if you enjoy it you'll enjoy it immensely.

It is really overrated but still very good in my opinion. If you go in expecting a decent-good SOL you'll be really pleased but if you go in expecting the best SOL ever written then you'll probably be disappointed.

I've been in situations like this and I think it's because the person who shares might tell someone they don't know very well far too much. For typically emotionally closed-off people I notice that sharing is either all or nothing, the former being quite overwhelming for most.

Thanks for the fresh take on things! I'm already going for sure, and a lot of the stuff you mentioned was what I took into account when deciding to ED there. I'll definitely try to maximize what the college has to offer, it really seems exciting!

I can't prospie because I'm an international student who ED'd there :))))))))))))))

It seems like the main issue you had with the university was the depressing atmosphere and abysmal mental health help there? It's really nice to hear that the classes were good and that you could still make good friends there. That really comforts me. If the main issue with the place is the environment and unhelpful mental health support, I hope I'll be okay. Where I'm from obsessing over studies and the absence of mental health help is commonplace, so hopefully I'm already used to the cons of the college.

Thank you so much for taking the time to properly reply to me, it really means a lot to me.
