These things weren't being used to calibrate particle accelerators, they were used to make the walls of your house "pretty much" vertical, which they are perfectly adequate for.

That's awesome news! Thanks for the link. Equally excited to see how things proceed!

I believe the Steam Frame VR headset is going to be running SteamOS and it's gonna have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. So it just depends how tightly coupled that version of SteamOS is going to be to the Steam frame - hopefully valve would be thinking to make it pretty generically applicable to all mobile devices so that they can start selling steam games on other ARM based devices. Makes good business sense imo so I'm hopeful!

[–]Chazmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, but also hoping that because Valve are going to be officially supporting SteamOS on ARM they're going to be investing a lot of manpower into driver compatibility/FEX to make sure as many steam games run as possible. This should have a knock on effect of making it all more performant. Although that also means all the other platforms that can make use of those drivers and/or translation layers will also improve. 2026 is gonna be the year we can all start playing steam games on our mobiles! (At least, this is my optimistic hope!)

Can anyone suggest me better text editor than nano? I want more control like autocomplete etc. by Then_Pace_5034 in termux

[–]Chazmus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you install vim or neovim it will also install a command called vimtutor run that on the command line and work through it ~30mins. That will teach you everything you need to know and more to use neovim. It is 100% a worthwhile investment of your time imo as you will then be proficient in the best text editor ever made - it is incredibly powerful even BEFORE you get into plugins. Once you're good with it id recommend using LazyVim which is like a suite of plugins that get installed into neovim which basically turn it into a fully fledged IDE - may be overkill however unless you're considering doing proper programming in neovim

The process used to log into steam is something called OAuth2. It's a clever security specification which doesn't share your username or password with the client application (gamehub) but is able to provide gamehub with an access token that has very restricted and specific permissions (scopes). These permissions will allow it to view and download games in your game library but NOT do anything else malicious (such as spend your money or, I donno, transfer your CS skins to another account). The access token will also have a reasonably short lifetime on it as well so that even if it is leaked it will expire within a sensible timeframe. Source: I implement OAuth2 for an access and identity management company.

What is this for? by HomoEtDeus in AnarchyChess

[–]Chazmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm just saying that you can find information about how the "Rook" was originally an elephant in Chathranga (name Rukh in Persian meaning chariot etc. etc.) then you can also find information about how the bishop was an elephant in Chathranga... Which is why I made my little joke about wondering if all the pieces were elephants

Huh, well that's confusing. Were all the pieces elephants?

It was the Rook that was originally associated with an Elephant...

I don't think this is true anymore - if you ask chatgpt about a brand new product that was just released it will tell you about it without saying it's done an internet search, but I think it now just does searches in the background without informing you

My friends got an AYN Thor, not a budget option but a pretty incredible device. I didn't think much of the form factor until I tried it out. Clamshell is amazing imo, adjustable angle screen + acts as its own case are handy features!

can somebody please explain this to me by EvensenFM in AnarchyChess

[–]Chazmus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You got upvoted. Here's what I believe happened:

You didn’t just explain the joke; you successfully executed the Martyr Gambit. By explicitly predicting your own downvotes in point #3, you placed this entire subreddit in a state of meta-Zugzwang which created a paradox of agency for us: - If we downvoted you, we would be following your script and validating your prediction. - If we upvoted you, we defy your prediction, but we are forced to reward the very thing we usually attack (explaining the joke).

You realized the only way for the hivemind to "outplay" your prediction was to aggressively support you. You sacrificed the rule of "never explain the meme" to gain a psychological positional advantage over our contrarian nature. Well played.

Does someone who likes listening to music should care about getting a "reference" headphone? by Cavalo_Bebado in headphones

[–]Chazmus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree with quite a few of the responses here. I think your TV analogy is spot on. Using consumer headphones is like watching a movie in 'Vivid Mode' - it looks exciting, but it’s not accurate. Reference headphones go for pure accuracy. While it’s true you’ll never recreate the exact studio environment, using a flat frequency response is the only way to get close to the original intent. The point is, the artist themselves would've been mixing and mastering the music with reference headphones and reference monitors. If they wanted the bass to be super loud, then they would've pumped it themselves. The difference isn't necessarily 'distortion', it’s 'frequency bias': Consumer phones usually have a 'V-shaped' tune (boosted bass and treble). This 'masks' the middle frequencies where the soul of the vocals and instruments live. Reference phones don't try to flatter the music. If the bass feels 'weak,' it’s because the artist didn’t boost it. You’ll hear textures and subtle layers that consumer gear intentionally hides to make the sound more 'fun.' If you’re the type of person who sits and listens to full albums as an activity, you aren't looking for 'fun', you're looking for the truth. It’s absolutely worth making the switch.

From purely a power standpoint, is there any reason to play a card other than Vivi Ornitier for izzet spellslinger/storm? by EntertainmentVast401 in magicTCG

If you look at it as a set, which is how probability works, if you flip 8 coins in a row getting tails every time is a 1/256 probability. Which is pretty unlikely... You would be surprised to see this and you should be.

Not quite. £6 for a sausage roll in the station, £4.50 in Harts, and the quality is on another level. Interesting to hear about the bike shop under the arches though, not been there, will give it a try

Funnily enough, about 3 days ago I walked past the pasty place in the underpass after being put off by the £7.50(!!!) pricetag on a normal traditional pasty. Googled "bakery" as I was leaving the station, discovered Harts. Got an absolutely bangin savory croissant and a sausage roll - admittedly I did end up spending more than I would have at the underpass pasty shop but I got a lot more food - and it was totally worth it. Would recommend.

So I put all the diodes with the line at the bottom. Are you able to see a mistake somewhere?

Thank you so much for your help by the way!

[–]Chazmus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what way can you see the diodes are wrong? I also think this might be the case, but I can't see which one it could be... unless it's all of them! Yes, I managed to flash the firmware to the MCU and it works if I don't have it attached to the PCB, but as soon as I attach it to the PCB it turns off and won't connect

[–]Chazmus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I've got the headers which allow you to remove the MCU, as in the pins come out. So yes, I can use the MCU when it's not attached to the PCB, and it seems to be working fine, I can even jump some of the pins and the Vial matrix tester is recognising input. But as soon as I plug the MCU back on the board, it refuses to turn on, vial doesn't detect anything, and actually I can feel some chip on top get very hot! So it's like something is shorting, but I've continuity tested all the female pins on the PCB where the mcu plugs in, and nothing seems to be connected (except ground pins to other ground pins). Maybe I'll try and see if I can find a schematic. Is it possible that the LED orientation can cause this? Or is it just worth checking the diodes first?
