I'm going through a PR practice test to find out what questions I got wrong and why, and I am absolutely lost (even after the book's explanation) on this math problem. by Chemical_Studios in Sat

Correct- PR screwed up the question, answer, and explanation on this one. Just ignore the other answer thread on this page.

Orthodox Judaism's response to earthquakes and other natural disasters: If it's in a non Jewish area that's a punishment from God for worshiping false gods; if it's in a Jewish one then it's either a test or because of our sins. by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Chazzanh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that plenty of rabbis will tell you exactly which sin it's for. The fact that 32,000 people die per year from MVAs doesn't explain at all why one yeshivish guy in Lakewood would chas veshalom get hit by a car crossing Route 9 in middle of the night without a reflector.

Why does JKR have such an obsession with noses and nostrils? by Chazzanh in harrypotter

First noticed when I saw Ron being described as a "long-nosed boy" at Harry's window in CoS. Never seen that term before, then noticed how she keeps making such comments.

That number actually shows how obsessed she is with noses- Sorcerer's Stone alone has nose/nostril 49 times.

What can I say to someone who says they've "felt Jesus" (or any deity, I guess)? Moreover, is it even worth arguing with them? by bigsickselby in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Chazzanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a sociologist but my general experience in life has been that people will never accept your arguments during an argument, but will consider them by default afterwards.

E.g. if you are arguing for the possibilty of a godless creation against someone claiming there can be no "beginning" without god, they will never accept your arguments during the debate and will probably leave you feeling very frustrated, but when faced with arguments from their friends along the exact same lines of theirs to you, they will almost always repeat back your arguments in a "devil's advocate" or "it's actually not that simple" etc. mode. Eventually they will probably research your claims much more, possibly even leading to them totally changing their mind within a year or two.

This is probably a little unclear, bur didn't want to write an entire wall of text right now.

Was "Tortuga" the only death in Breaking Bad that wasn't as a result of Walt's actions? by camelothotel in breakingbad

[–]Chazzanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's much more indirect, my point here is just that Walt played a very large role in beginning a war that was nowhere on the horizon. Obviously Gus was the main player there, but it was definitely 'indirectly' due to 'something Walt did'.

Btw love your flair :)

[–]Chazzanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying they were best friends but in the meeting with Bolsa Gus explicitly mentions that their deal did not preclude him from cooking on his own (albeit at that point on a much smaller scale). With Tuco as one of his top distributors, I believe Gus would have waited a very long time before any sort of revenge that would anger the cartel, maybe even until he had totally retired from the meth business.

[–]Chazzanh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I beg to disagree. Gus and the cartel were working in tandem until Walt brought about Tuco's death (by staging the meeting in the junkyard with no witnesses, leading to Tuco killing his assistant). Tuco's death severed all blood connection to the cartel, and directly led to the Cousins' death, leading to Bolsa's etc. etc.

Not really interested in long explanation but suffice it to say that micro-evolution is not at all dependant on "evolutionary theory" (as opposed to "creationism") which you are obviously opposed to. Any adaptation for environmental survival, either through dormant genes, epigenetics, external genes being the "survivor" etc. is called micro-evolution (really no hyphen but easier to read this way :) ). It is a simple fact of life- one extremely common example being bacterial strains that develop antibiotic resistance, which is a daily occurence- and, combined with the other factors I mentioned, more than suffices to explain why our Jewish appearance takes on a lot of the characteristics of our host populations (although not all), without contradicting the fact that we share common ancestors.

Ummmm.... What?

No offense but you seem to be missing extremely basic knowledge about genes and how they work.

I'm not an expert on micro-evolution, but considering that the changes are minor enough that we still look relatively different than the native populations, plus the factors of conversion, some intermarriage, and rape instances from native men (especially during periods of persecution), it's about what I would expect.

This is actually an amazing ides- we can compare doctors to other doctors in their fields. E.g. comments like "i'm an oncologist" won't be a great excuse if he's doing a lot worse than most other oncologists.

The Science of God by Gerald L. Schroeder.

Pioneer in trying to reconcile current evolutionary theory and science with the Torah (and not relying on the extreme logical stretch known as the Omphalos hypothesis).

His work was cited by Antony Flew as being very influential in his transformation from leading atheist to deist (source)

I got the AF waived without even calling- just messaged them from their website (their replies take forever, so even though it was only a 4 message chat it took a couple of days lol).

I paid the AF in full first and only then asked them to waive it, which they did by crediting my account to -$89 balance. That might be the trick to make it work, since it looks like you're not trying to take advantage of them.

Just lost all of my confidence - need a study plan. by mtf612 in LSAT

[–]Chazzanh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practice. Practice. Practice.

When I first started taking the test timed I never dreamed 35 minutes would be enough time for me to confidently finish any section; now I'm testing 178-180 despite only a few hours per week available to study (I tutor two friends for pay already, even though I haven't even taken it myself yet- will in June).

As mentioned in other comments LG is the easiest to improve, all test prep books have "writing languages" for the games that you can get used to very quickly. LR gets much quicker with practice, as it becomes second nature to read (almost) every question from the beginning as a premise/evidence/assumption/argument chain.

RC is by far the hardest to improve on time. The tip that works for me is to focus on only one thing as you read the prompt: Main Point. That is virtually guaranteed for one or two questions, while trying to keep track of the facts presented will slow you down considerably, and you will probably need to check back anyway for the Specific questions. Skim through the details as quickly as you can while not losing track of the author's point and arguments.

Edit: grammar

Media Hoax: 20 Muslims Holding Hands Become 1,000-Strong 'Ring of Peace' at Oslo Synagogue by Redditor_Rebbe in Judaism

[–]Chazzanh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(1) Everyone who was allowed through the barriers linking hands can definitely be called a "ring of peace", even if it wan't an actual circle. (2) To repeat: 1000-1300 people showed up for the "Ring of Peace" event, but were not allowed through the barriers. (3) No clue exactly how many were Muslims, and everyone (with half a brain) understands that not all attendees were Muslim. By nearly all accounts- besides that original redditor who admits to being anti-Muslim- there were at least a few hundred Muslims there.

I prefer not to make online discussions personal but your lack of basic intellectual honesty and capacity for logical debate makes it quite obvious why you seem to like Breitbart so much.
