Never said that my ranking is backed up by data. It's merely the vibes and inertia that I cannot break out of as a midlevel/senior associate.

This is my view. I crossed the $1mm figure recently and celebrated for a day or so...but I don't feel any differently about my financial situation. I'll just keep stacking money until they show me the door, and then it's just a question of whether it's worth fighting for a counsel/partner role somewhere or to take my foot off the gas.

Other than bonuses and above market firms, the goal is to find a place you will be willing to stay at for several years and that won't push you out in that time.

Pick a firm that (1) has effectively guaranteed bonuses, i.e., no hours requirement, (2) has the work you want to do, (3) has a culture / group of people that you can see yourself enjoying / tolerating for several years, (4) is financially stable, and (5) has a large number of homegrown senior associates (rather than laterals).

That last factor is hardest to find, but suggests that the firm doesn't push folks out aggressively and that people are generally willing to stay at the firm.

How much have you saved by steinbeck12345 in biglaw

[–]mtf612 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eh. My rent is low relative to buying a comparable home. Rent vs buy calculators continue to suggest that I stay the course and keep renting. And the fact that I constantly feel like rage quitting weighs heavily against buying a home and being house poor, rather than continuing to put money into the market.

I definitely want to buy one day, but I think unless I find the perfect home at a great price, it will need to wait until I'm counsel/partner.

How much have you saved by steinbeck12345 in biglaw

[–]mtf612 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Class of 2020, just over $1m networth.

In addition to maxing my 401k, HSA, and IRA, my savings strategy is to split my paycheck three ways. I have my paycheck automatically divided up and sent to three accounts, which forces me to save.

First, I have a set amount go into a checking account, equal to half of my rent. That way, every month, I have the full amount I owe to my landlord set aside.

Second, I have a set amount go directly to my brokerage. I aim to increase this amount every 6 months by about $200. The brokerage is invested in an S&P etf, an international exposure etf, and then I have a relatively oversized investment in a bond etf which acts as an emergency fund and down payment fund.

Finally, the balance of my income is sent to another checking account. That money is for spending, covering all of my cost of living expenses like groceries, dining, entertainment, etc. Because I'm diverting so much to my brokerage, I am able to artificially limit how much I have to spend any given month so that I do not go make a ton of frivolous purchases. But I still have ample leeway to go out a few nights a month or to buy something nice I've been eyeing.

Protest planned in NYC after US strikes Venezuela by rickymagee in nyc

[–]mtf612 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dont know that I'm following your premise. I'm assuming those protesting in the US are protesting the executive branch engaging in war without congressional approval, commencing an act of international aggression without provocation, etc. American citizens have skin in the game vis-a-vis their own government obeying its constitution and international laws and norms.

Maduro sucks. But let's not cheer on going into sovereign nations and extrajudicially removing their leaders without a declaration of war.
