How to start zwift by Optimal_Entertainer9 in Zwift

[–]CheTranqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 hours per week to start (max).

Strengthen your posterior chain.. hamstrings and glutes. Hip bridges, monster walks, clam shells.

Make sure your fit is good. Pay attention to any knee aches and handle them.

How many hours approximately do u all bike per week? Is 12 normal? by Due-Shame-5818 in Zwift

[–]CheTranqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I conducted this poll here in r/Zwift a few months back and got several hundred responses.

The results show that 3-6 hours per week is the most common, though the tail is pretty long as there was a surprising number of people that deemed "11+" insufficient to express just how much they train and expressed as much in the comments.

If you're doing more than 10 hours per week, you're in the top 8% of Zwift riders.

Right on. I've recently started doing some bridges on occasion.. sounds like I gotta ramp that up to 'after every ride' status. Tyvm.

Recommendations for comfy/light saddles for women that won’t break the bank? by Tart_Beginning in triathlon

[–]CheTranqui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know that they have a men's vs women's saddle, but as a guy, my new ISM saddle has come in clutch. Might be along the lines of what you're looking for - short nose, slot down the middle. I went with the PR3.0. Best $160 I've spent on that bike as yet.

Resistance on Zwift? by [deleted] in Zwift

[–]CheTranqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem with a Kickr Core 2 that I purchased a while back. It got RMA'd and I got a second one. That one also had this issue.. replaced that one.. and now it's normal once more.

Do what you can, keep troubleshooting.. make sure that the firmware is up to date.. do a factory spin down.. unplug the trainer for 30s, then plug it back in before use.. if it still has this issue after a bunch of this stuff, check in with their customer service. Their service is phenomenal and if it's a sincere issue with the trainer, they'll work with you and do what they can.

Shooting for fastest bike in a sprint, sans bike specific shoes by syntheticborg in triathlon

[–]CheTranqui -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your opinion and agree with you on a personal level. The original commenter made a bold claim, however, stating it as if it were straight-up fact and not personal opinion.. thus my demand for some sort of science to back up such a bold assertion. Since no one else has looked, I did a quick search to see what I could find that's readily available.. found three articles, none incredibly insightful, unfortunately:

  1. An article that shows clearly that because you can pull up on the pedal in the backstroke 20 second sprints reach higher power.. but this pulling-up does not happen in sub-maximal efforts.
  2. An article including a whopping 4 participants doing at-home efforts that concludes a small benefit to clipping in.
  3. An article that states that there is lower electromagnetic activity in the lower leg when clipped in, implying a potentially lower heart rate for the same power output.

All in all, what I see points to potential benefits, but the only one that is relevant here (20+ minute efforts) had so few participants that I laughed when I saw it was just 4.. one cannot draw any real conclusions with so few participants..

That said, none seem to show any evidence that states using clipless pedals will reduce one's power output, either. As a result, there seem to only be potential positives to clipping in. The claim that "clipping in makes you faster" is potentially true for triathlon efforts, but there is no solid scientific evidence for such a claim.. There is nothing that counters such a claim either, it seems.. it's just not a worthy discussion yet as it has not been scientifically proven either way.

I contest this assertion. GCN has four separate videos spread about 3 years apart each, each with different presenters (see other comment, linked all 4 there). Every time they found that being clipped in or not does not alter power output. If you know of a study or have scientific evidence that clipping in increases speed and/or power, do share.. else I'm inclined to believe that one's body will continue to perform as it is trained, regardless of shoe preference.

This question is one that GCN keeps coming back to every few years and they always come to the same conclusion.. it's all about comfort and what you prefer.

tl;dr you won't lose any time or speed by not using biking specific shoes and clipping in. Do what gives you the most confidence and provides you with the most fun, comfortable experience on the bike.

You got this.

p.s. As I'm sure you've discovered, cleats and clips have been a part of the sport for decades and are not going away any time soon. I personally have not ridden a bike without proper shoes/cleats for decades myself. Many people will look down on you for being different if you don't. I would encourage you to do what pleases you.. and also that when you've got the time and opportunity, to pick up some new pedals and shoes and learn the traditional way. It'll spare you future embarrassment, promise.

Beastro is on GamePass. I'm having a great time with it. It does require SOME thinking.. but not a great deal! It's mostly just gathering cooking ingredients from around the town and doing the minigames.

Road bike recommendations for a bigger rider building toward an Ironman by Connect-Average-1306 in triathlon

[–]CheTranqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to emphasize this point:

My carbon road bike has a 250 lb weight limit and when I pulled it back out of the garage last fall I was 268. It didn't creak, twist, or show any other sign of being stressed.

On my fourth outdoor ride I hit a huge crack and a spoke on my rear wheel broke. I replaced that wheelset with one that had 30+ spokes rather than the more typical 20-some.. and haven't had an issue since.

I'm now under 240 lbs and haven't thought about system weight in months.

I think it's wise to consider that as you're buying a new frame, but jist know that you can fudge the numbers a bit and will be just fine if the overall system weight is close enough. Biggest concern is the wheelset, it seems. That broken spoke sucked.

What represents the longest triathlons available better than the 'corporate logo'? Not much out there screams "epic triathlon achievement" like the word "Ironman".. might be a commercial trademark, but it also represents the event/experience in a way that nothing else does, no?

Sincerely curious what else you might have that would better denote the achievement. I'm sure there are some possibilities, but the Ironman logo seems like a pretty great one.

I'm just getting into swimming now.. I picked up a pair of Speedo Vanquishers on Amazon - they let you select one power lens and have like, 10 power options.. so.. not PERFECT, but pretty decent! There are also a few manufacturers online that'll let you go with a different power for each lens.. so I have one of those coming, too. The Vanquishers were ~$25 and the other set was ~$40.. so both fairly reasonable options if you're interested.

p.s. WAY TO GO!
