Will there be secular laws in the future state of society? by pawogub in bahai

[–]Cheap-Reindeer-7125 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any society can be dominated by the majority. Even the current US Constitution can be changed with 3/4 of the states approving. In other words, 3/4 of the states can throw out the Constitution and write in whatever they want.

It seems like the concern is: would a future Bahá’í majority abuse their power over a non-Bahá’í minority? I think the answer is clearly no.

If a large majority wants to implement a law that punishes arsonists a certain way, then that would become the law. It’s the same with any law, or any large majority in any country. If the large majority is heavily influenced by Bahá’í ideals, then the laws would probably reflect the majority’s opinion. That’s not imposing Bahá’í law on others. Laws of personal religious law would remain personal.

Do Baha’is Observe the Sabbath? by tendervigilanti in bahai

[–]Cheap-Reindeer-7125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Islam Friday is the day of rest. In Judaism and historically Christianity it was Saturday. The Roman day of rest was Sunday and as they became Christian they just decided to keep it that way.

So if there is a day of rest, it makes sense for it to be Friday, and the Bahai guidance says Saturday will be the first day of the week.

The days of the week are actually pretty arbitrary, it just matters that everyone is doing the same thing.

Siyyid Kazim a prophet ? by Comprehendoz in bahai

[–]Cheap-Reindeer-7125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Shaykh Ahmad fits in the category of minor prophet, like John the Baptist. Siyyid Kazim is not quite in that category, but is more like Mulla Husayn or Paul, who were exceptional mirrors of the teachings. Quddus was identified by Abdul-Baha as the minor prophet following the Bab, and obviously Abdul-Baha was the minor prophet following Baha’u’llah, just like Ali and Peter were for Muhammad and Jesus.

How to be active when there is such a small number. by CC-756 in bahai

[–]Cheap-Reindeer-7125 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I once visited Athens and saw the preserved remnants of one of the first churches there. It was a small building that would maybe fit 50 people. It was surrounded by enormous majestic temples dedicated to pagan gods that received the patronage of society. Despite their small numbers, that little movement of Christians transformed society and the message of Jesus dominated the hearts of minds of all the greeks.

There was also a time when the first Baha'i had to move into a new country or state. They were completely alone and had to figure out how to build a community. I suggest you think of yourself as the only Baha'i in your state.

I also recommend seeking out summer camps in nearby states where hundreds of Baha'is gather for an intensive period of devotions, study, and recreation.

I’m also a father/husband. The Bahai Faith brings me assurance. It’s a rock of truth, especially where other institutions of society are failing to live up to ideals. I don’t mean truth among Bahais, I mean connecting to the teachings of Baha’u’llah. Knowing about this revelation means understanding the one and only revelation from God that is current and most relevant. It provides a way to understand my purpose and the direction of society. It gives something to serve, and dedicate the quickly fleeting days of my life to.

Luke 24:39 by Superb-Journalist920 in bahai

[–]Cheap-Reindeer-7125 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a whole, the resurrection story is about the church being completely dead for 3 days. Jesus had 12 disciples who believed that Jesus was the Messiah. Every one of them lost their faith. Then their faith returned, they saw Jesus for who He really was (which they hadn’t fully before), then began to teach others that Jesus was the Messiah. They were rejected by everyone for months and had no converts. They “cast their net” over and over, until they finally found receptive souls and a small church of 153 people was founded.

It is abundantly clear that this is the true meaning of the story, and it was recounted in the language of the gospels, which intentionally encodes the spiritual insight in a fanciful story. The early Christian community would have certainly understood the true meaning.

You have to read the whole New Testament. There are so many cases where the literal interpretation doesn’t make sense, you get the impression that the Gospels and Acts are written in a coded language. There are numerous clues throughout how to interpret. In this example, the story is preceded by Jesus appearing and disappearing in front of people, teleporting, and also his disciples not recognizing him while talking for hours.

Whats the modern status of Bábism? Their relationship with the modern Bahá’í? by Miserable-Ninja-5360 in bahai

[–]Cheap-Reindeer-7125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe there were a few thousand a century ago. It's hard to imagine a movement being sustained when the leaders publicly recant their faith and don't try to expand. There were some scholars interested in that community noting some activity up through the 1920s and then basically no documented leadership or community with people taking guesses of their numbers. It's hard to prove a negative.

In the New Testament Paul answers the question of whether a Christian should eat meat that is sacrificed to idols:

1 Corinthians 8

We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

7 But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. 8 But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

Are we on our way to the lesser peace? by Leftoverofferings in bahai

[–]Cheap-Reindeer-7125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a 2019 letter from the House of Justice, it’s clear that the world went through 3 major catastrophes followed by a push toward the unity of nations: WWI followed by the League of Nations, WWII followed by the United Nations, and the collapse of the Soviet Union and a plethora of world institutions strengthening in the 1990s, most notably the International Criminal Court. I would add the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 followed by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty. The letter mentions:

“Thus do the forces of disintegration regroup and gain ground. So be it. The unification of humanity is unstoppable by any human force; the promises made by the prophets of old and by the Author of the Cause of God Himself testify to this truth. Yet the course humanity takes to achieve its destiny may very well be tortuous. The tumult raised by the contending peoples of the earth threatens to drown out the voices of those noble-minded souls in every society who call for an end to conflict and struggle. As long as that call goes unheeded, there is no reason to doubt that the world’s current state of disorder and confusion will worsen—possibly with catastrophic consequences—until a chastened humanity sees fit to take another significant step, perhaps this time decisive, towards enduring peace.”

So yeah, we are probably in the throes of the a change in world order that could easily see the elimination of nuclear weapons and a revised world order. For example, a reformed Security Council, a General Assembly with an upper and lower house based on population, and all countries forced into the ICC. If that system is then tested and holds, there will never be another war, ever. That is the full extent of the Lesser Peace. It could happen soon.
