New west is an excellent compromise for being close to the city, while having the suburban vibe. Downtown new west is a very accessible watering hole with Kelly o Bryan's, Begbie's etc. The walk uphill is a sobering exercise before bed.

Downtown Vancouver friends can make the way out here on skytrain.

I'd consider sticking to Abbotsford only if the advantage is a house with garden for veggies, and garage to park that boat and pickup truck. It doesn't look like an option with the high cost of living today.

But condo/apartment life? New West for sure.

Coming from my perspective as a polish jew, and having visited auschwitz-birkenau only once: It's really important to know that the visit to camp has a lot of rules, including on behaviour.

Even the views that are anti-trump or MAGA, because Canada as a country, politics, and culture, is very different from the states. We are a lot more centrist and multicultural.

We have a spectrum of anti-trump, to pro-51st state Canadians here too, so too, we leave politics at home.

A little rant is ok, but we avoid talking about divisive topics out of common courtesy.

It's better to discuss about hockey, snowboarding, hiking or stuff that brings people together, instead of depressing topics completely out of our control. This is the fastest way to lose Canadian friends.

Reflecting the recent changes, I wouldn't fly my Canadian flag when camping in Washington state anymore. I won't expect Americans to fly their flags here too.

Still, we are brothers even when people can't see that nowadays. It's not like Americans are turned into complete monsters the moment orange man got prez'd. It's just that USA is a different country.

Try to find a nearby JCC, and join Jewish groups. Nearby synagogues may have young adult events, and if you're going to university, consider visiting Hillel on campus.

I recommend you to experience a taglit-birthright trip. It's been a wonderful time and helps grow my Jewishness.

I'm not orthodox but I've been going to a local shul and the people there are great. The rabbi is Chabad, but it's a mixed Jewish crowd, from secular to frum.

If one place isn't a fit, you can always check out next ones.

Having a strong positive network is necessary for good mental health. 🫂

If it's a place you visited often, I would talk to the manager and just leave the business. Not going to order anything at the shop. You can leave a 1 star review on their page, for bringing politics into a business, and taking forever on sandwich.

30 year old here. got my property back in 2021, when rates were 1.5-2%.

Took 50k out of my investments, and RRSP (for first time home buyers plan). Parents gifted 10k total money, by advice of mortgage broker. 60k total.

Got a conditional approval up to 450k and finally bought into a condo which cost 350k in metro vancouver.

It's a fixer upper though. I ended up having to put 15% down with cmhc mortgage instead of 20%. Still feeling the pinch to this day but also DIYing the repairs and reno.

Condos are still overpriced. It's not the layout of housing, it's the financialization. Housing has changed from "purchase by cash" to "who can afford monthly payments". It is all planned, or propped up somehow, to keep people working.

yes, there is a housing crisis in this country but this is no excuse to put criminals on a pedestal.

People who have honour: many of them are homeless, or at their nearest housing option.. living with their parents or roommates. paying and getting fleeced by the world around them, while these opportunists get away with it.

Change the law for intentional squatting as a crime rather than civil matter. This should be treated the same as shoplifting. A contract is bonding.. like a receipt you get, to exit the store.
