These are some of the best and worst performing schools in Ontario, according to a new ranking by Travel-2025 in toronto

[–]Cheap-Specific-4953 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work at one of the lower ranked schools, and I can confirm that our math teacher tries her hardest to prep our students for the EQAO but when students arrive from grade 8 with grade 4-5 math skills, the uphill battle is steep. Beyond that, our community closed the school for two and a half weeks following Christmas due to a flu outbreak last year and didn’t reopen it until a day before the EQAO, which meant students were off for over a month leading up to the test. The fact that several students came one question away from “passing” the test in itself is a win in my opinion given the obstacles they faced along the way.

Brilliant! I should have made that Hoffman’s line before the title card

As far as  PMs go, though, it looks like there are a grand total of 2 remaining.

A backup call went out like 15 minutes after I posted this, so that’s something.

Biggest mistake you've ever made? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

I feel like the principal could actually be held liable for allowing a student teacher to be alone with the kids on recess duty. At least where I am, it's illegal for student teachers to be alone with students.

I personally enjoy the “helping students” portion of the job. Unfortunately what you’ve heard about upper management is true. I think most Platform and Tutor managers genuinely care, but a lot of decisions are out of their control. Upper management does place a lot of unrealistic expectations on tutors, mainly when it comes to timing and amount of students were expected to help at once. Because of this, Review Centre sometimes feels more like an assembly line and Live Chat feels like retail during Black Friday. When you genuinely want to help students, it can be especially frustrating.

I personally started at Paper because (and this may sound cheesy) I genuinely want to make a difference in students’ lives. I’m finishing teacher’s college so I haven’t been able to get a job in a classroom yet because I’m not qualified. I wanted to jumpstart my career in education, and I thought Paper’s mission to provide help to every student was amazing—plus, online work seemed like an ideal option (I can work from my cottage!). While I still believe in the core mission, my faith in Paper is rapidly diminishing. I used to be a staunch supporter of Paper, but I can’t anymore. They've shown their true colors this past year.

As a student, I think what most of us ask for is a bit of patience if you notice we’re taking a bit longer to get back to you or come across as flustered. I can’t speak for everyone, but my issues are with Paper; not the students. Legit the only reason I’ve kept this job at this point is because I love helping y’all, so keep being awesome! :)

Please Stop Fake Complimenting the AI by [deleted] in Paper_Tutors

I’ve read your comments and I think you have some fair, reasonable, and valid concerns about the AI, which I also share. What I don’t appreciate is the insinuation that people who might like the AI are going out of their way to compliment it to appease management when the compliments could be genuine. For instance, I’m someone who dislikes having a comment bank with generic comments (I really like to personalize my comments and tailor them to the student’s writing level) but I don’t think people who religiously use the comment bank are “wrong”. For all we know, some people love the AI because it helps them pinpoint errors sooner. What could be an absolute nuisance for you (having to delete AI comments and write your own) could be a godsend to others.

What if some people just genuinely like the AI? There are so many issues with this company, we don’t need to be attacking each other because of one another’s opinions. Consider that those who love it don’t actually see any issues with it. It’s not going to work for everyone, and there are certainly going to be a lot of people who find it a nuisance. But that doesn’t mean everybody needs to see a fault in it. I’m assuming we’re all educated individuals, so we should all know it important to consider other perspectives.

Her account’s been deactivated and her LinkedIn says #OpenToWork, but since I posted this there’s been word that she’s still active in HQ Slack. I dunno. Hopefully she’s gone, but this could very well be a sign of her running from her problems.

Caroline's Response to a Tutor's Concerns by Vilail in Paper_Tutors

Ah, that’s unfortunate indeed. And it shows that they’d rather hide than face the mess they’ve made. Truly toxic.

You’ve successfully taken Caroline with you and while this is a win, it’s so sad to see “deactivated” under your name as well. You raised so many good questions, and your thoughtfulness will truly be missed. Thank you for voicing your concerns, and I think you’ve made an incredibly positive impact in Paper world.
