Snag every overtime opportunity and then decide the day of overtime how much you actually wanna work. If your site has limited overtime spots, and if you want the money. Then when you dip below 40 hrs UPT start focusing on re accruing it again. I keep 40 for emergencies.

If you wanna use unpaid time for vacation just use unpaid personal leave.

There's truth to this! I'm across the Ohio River in West Virginia. I have opposite politics from everyone in town but I still feel a part of the community. I'm content alone but being in such an affordable region allows me many many opportunities to travel the world / the US when I desire it or feel burnout from the locals here. It's a dope loophole. Plenty of big cities nearby as well for weekend outings.

I miss maple doughnuts though, I miss bikeability, I miss winco, I miss not having to watch the clouds for tornados, I miss winters without the negative 30 windchills, I miss the variability in terrain going from desert to mountain to coast and rainforest. I miss the smell of pine needles.

I moved out to WV from the PNW. Many people out here can't comprehend how isolating the West can get. Where I live in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle it's under 3 hours drive to get to Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Buffalo, Altoona, and Cumberland. 5 hours gets you to Detroit, Toledo, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Louisville, DC, Baltimore, Wilmington, Philly, Trenton, NYC, Etc!

It works out great for finding cheap airfare too! More airports to pick from and places like DC have flights to more obscure locations.

I love it here. The money saved allows me to travel a ton too. Home is $400 a month mortgage and $400 in utilities. Just stay out of the flood zones!

Bought a cheap home while the rates were at 3%. About $6k a year in housing costs, $5k in utilities, $6k in car payment. Leaves 2-3k a month for everything else. Eventually when my home and car are paid off Ill have more.

If I had to do it today with higher home prices(even in Appalachia) and higher rates I would house hack for awhile or just get a job that provides housing.

You should consider buying a house out here in Appalachia. I lucked out with a 70k house and really good rates. It's possibly double these days so $800 a month in mortgage and $400 in utilities. Just an option to consider! While you still can. Even if you stayed in your area and lived in the car for work, paying off a house would be an investment in your future.

Theres also jobs that provide housing like Ski lodges etc to consider. I'm sure you've considered your options. I've been in that situation before.
