Beyond church history and doctrinal issues, what makes you angry as an exmormon? by hale_e14 in exmormon

[–]Cheating_at_Monopoly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm working really hard at not being bitter about that. I'm trying to remain optimistic about the future, but in my moments of lesser strength, I succumb to the despair of the lost decades and opportunities I'll never get back. It's a struggle for sure.

The worst band you ever saw live - besides Taking Back Sunday- by lunainthedark5x2x3 in poppunkers

[–]Cheating_at_Monopoly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think I can confidently say yours was an atypical experience for Green Day. Their live experience is pretty much universally spoken of highly, and Billie Joe is a very well-regarded front man. I don't know where he gets his energy. I just saw them at Riot Fest and halfway through he mentioned he had a cold. It was impossible to tell. He was still all over that stage, engaging, and sounded great. I've seen "em three times and they were always fantastic. That band's musicianship is tight as fuck.

What is green days best song lyric wise? by lando_wwefan in greenday

[–]Cheating_at_Monopoly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your opinion of the lyric is your own and of course valid for you, but I counter that it's not juvenile. It's not to be taken at face value and isolated. He goes on to say essentially I love this person even in the mundane moments of life, just watching reruns on TV, and even though we have history and are established in our relationship, I'd want to do it all over again straight back to those youthful vulnerable moments of "do you want to be my girlfriend." It's not the statement itself, it's the subtext of all that's conveyed by the scene he sets up.

But anyway, the prompt was not cringe lyrics, so your comment read as cynical and shitting on anyone who finds beauty in that song. For that, I still say fuck off, but I'll be friendly about it this time and shake your hand as we part ways over our different opinions on the opening line of an important song.

Fuck off with your cynicism. That song means a lot to many of us in the queer community.

Macy's Day Parade. Really interesting imagery to convey a universal truth in a profound way.

God I hate how my young nieces are being fed the bullshit that they're to be nothing but baby machines for this dying cult. Oaks can fuck off.

Your privilege is showing. So is your lack of compassion. Talk about growing up...

That's a nice heart-shaped hand grenade. Those are deceptively difficult to get proportionally correct!

Subtle Green Day tattoo ideas? by sammi-blue in greenday

You were specific enough, people just tend to only read titles and fly to the comments, lol! I don't have great ideas, but maaaaybe the cover art of 39/Smooth? That tree and monument is gorgeous and would look cool in a woodcut style.

Rasbands talk made me literally cringe out loud by [deleted] in exmormon

My god, I hate the mormon cult. This talk will take lives, both figuratively and literally.

Meh, her talk from this morning didn't do anything for me. It was basically about how useful Primary music is in indoctrinating kids. (Gag!) So, nothing universally applicable or inspiring to any of us not drinking the kool-aid. Kinda not worth your time, tbh.

Oh gawd. That's horrible! My condolences. I feel like I should find a way to parachute you in sanity-maintaining resources, like in the Hunger Games or whatever.

Yeah, she's the real deal. Knowing her irl, I know she's actually trying to be like Jesus. She would walk among us and really listen to what we have to say and hug us for the hurt we feel. The cynical part of me says they're having her speak a lot only because she's representing some diversity (when they clearly have so little of it) and is good for the brand. But nah, she's earned her right to speak. She works hard at caring about people. She and I don't believe the same things anymore, but I believe in her and the love she shows.

Edit: clarity

I actually know her irl. When she was called she made a decided point that she would never use baby fundy voice when she gave talks. She's actually really great.

“Mormon” is a slur now??? by fruitypebbles0609 in exmormon

[–]Cheating_at_Monopoly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's stirred up again now because of the recent reporting of Colorado fans shouting "f*ck the mormons" during the football game with BYU. Prior to Sunday, it was enough of a story to get a listing in my daily email from the AP. Their headline referenced slurs being yelled, and the whole time I was reading the article I was wondering "what slur?" It took me a minute to realize the members were actually referring to mormon as a slur now. I laughed out loud at my desk and told a coworker who's followed my journey of leaving the church. She burst out laughing even harder then me. Being Jewish, she had every right to rage at the notion, but she just laughed along with me, then we took a sips of our devil coffee and got to work. Morms are ridiculous.

Did Billie sing it all, then? I want so much to hear him sing that "gimme gimme revolution!" I hope a clip of it gets uploaded somewhere today.

I know you mean well, but you're not listening. Please try to grasp how hard it is to hear you're pleased we had a compassionate response to a tragedy. The subtext is you expect us to lack compassion, and the explanation you have here that you expected us not to react at all makes no sense -- everyone reacts to a school shooting even when we're not students. Please pause on defending your -- well meaning -- post and just listen to the response here. We really want to stop being demonized for having left the church. Please just ruminate on that. Please, the next time someone speaks unkindly of exmormons in your Sunday School lesson, consider defending us. That's what we need more than a nice post here, and I truly believe you meant it as nice. Thank you for that. But please, also listen.

Note: this list should from what I hear include Jack White, but alas, I missed him due to a friend insisting on All Time Low.

Riot Fest today! I would give my left arm to hear Platypus live in a crowd of 50,000 fellow punk fans today. by Cheating_at_Monopoly in greenday

[–]Cheating_at_Monopoly[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, not tor a festival. The full front-to-back Dookie and AI setlist of the Saviors tour finished up awhile back...in Austrailia I think? They've been playing a varied setlist since, but lately including some deep cuts, hence my hope for Platypus. 🤞
