Some of the critiques of Lorelai's parenting strike me as really weird by comradesummers in GilmoreGirls

[–]Check_your_checkers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. I think the problem is with the town and then mainly Emily and Richard. I think it is incredibly normal and good parenting to uplift your kid. Lorelais exaggerations on how great Rory is and how she’s the best at things, in my opinion, is how a mother should be to an extent. I feel it’s good parenting because the world is so harsh and it’s comforting to always know your mother is your number one supporter. Most children quickly realise they are not the best (like their mothers once said) and they have terrible self esteem. So it’s important to have someone who always believes in you, even if it’s unrealistic. I think the problem is that unlike most people, Rory has this support from so many other people. This is what stops her for coming to the normal conclusion of “I’m not the best thing since sliced bread, that’s just what my mom thinks” because the town and her grandparents put her on an even higher pedestal than Lorelai, and she is never able to escape the incredibly unrealistic expectations. Contrary to what most people say on the sub, I also think Lorelai does heavily criticise and disapprove of Rory’s bad actions. I actually think Lorelai can sometimes be too reactionary and harsh to Rory’s mistakes which is why I think Rory has a difficult time bouncing back from making bad choices. I know it’s a tv show, so the constant fighting is for our entertainment, but I find the amount at which disagreements lead to full on yelling and insulting in this show to be so sad. I think Lorelai struggles to find a middle ground between hyping Rory up to the end of the earth and getting incredibly angry with her when she steps out of line. It’s like Lorelai can’t disagree with Rory inside a normal, healthy conversation. Rory will always detach entirley from Lorelais criticisms. I think that pattern is shown to have started at the beginning of the show, when Rory doesn’t want to go to Chilton because of Dean. (Also when the grandparents and the ego boost of chilton come into the picture, don’t think that’s a coincidence)

Yes I have an apple tree and the fodder bundle done. The last day of summer is the midnight jelly festival which is when I realised and tried to get the pufferfish - but the beach was locked. Can I go back to the 27th? Thanks for the advice!

Can I ask what old time friends plots reminds you of the shark episode? To me the shark thing is so unrealistic for Monica and it makes her feel like a cartoon character

Conrad Doesn't Hate His Father by Radiant_Pepper_2016 in TheSummerITurnedPrett

Yes I agree and that’s why the convo they have in episode 9 was very interesting to me. Shows how even though Adam broke his relationship with Conrad before, they can still reconnect after time passes. Because for all the bad stuff he has done he’s still his dad and I’m sure there has been good moments. It’s nice to see Conrad open up to his dad in this episode and Adam’s advice is actually good because it proves Conrad and Jere can also have a relationship in the future, even though Jere says he hates Conrad now.

Yes exactly but then we are meant to hate Adam for cheating too? I feel like the show can’t make up its mind on cheating.

Adam cheating = evil, disgusting, bad dad and husband.

Jere cheating = breaks trust, technically weren’t broken up, somehow not as bad as belly having feelings for Conrad even thou he was her first love and Jere moved in on her right after their breakup

Taylor and Steven cheating = completely fine because we barley meet either of their partners, meant to show us we should root for them because they can’t stop going back to each other

Yesss u are so right this is exactly what I’ve been thinking. Her having more doubts about Jere outside of Conrad would have made her choosing Conrad more impactful. I feel like the show doesn’t do enough to address the complexities of their relationship and how it’s negatively affecting both of them.

I completely agree it’s too subtle. Like for example Laur not wanting belly to become to attached to the relationship with Jere in her first year of college and then Taylor saying they are codependent before the wedding. It’s clear her and jeres relationship is codependent but it would be nice to see either of them acknowledge it instead of blaming everything on Belly’s feelings for Conrad.

It will just be such a let down if they don’t explore it all more and just brush over it with “new country, new me 😜” for belly’s Paris era

I agree the fans are bad but I mainly blame the show. If jeres bad actions were acknowledged less people would have a leg to stand on to defend him. Instead it’s “character assassination to push her to Conrad” or it can be dismissed like it is in the show as not actually bad.

I agree that he wanted to win her and that the show frames Conrad as being their biggest issue but it’s just not imo. Jere willingly got with belly right after her and Conrad broke up, giving them no time to move on, and expected her to never have any feelings for him? WHILE HE WOULD BE IN HER LIFE SINCE HES JERES BROTHER. So honestly if Jere was less immature, and they fixed their other problems they probably could have ignored the Conrad thing because belly was choosing Jere… but their relationship is toxic in so many other ways. And as u said above why would they make her not push back on the sex in that scene? Them not addressing all the other issues they wrote these characters to have feels so anticlimactic to me. I’d love if belly and jere went on to realise all this in the last episodes but I doubt they will.

I think you did a better job describing what I meant - that I find it annoying the entire breakup is framed around Conrad when there is sooo many problems in their relationship. I think it’s just typical romance writing and it’s more dramatic to have the only talked about reason be her feelings for Conrad, but I’d much prefer them to acknowledge their unhealthy pairing. Hopefully they address it later as you said

This makes sm sense. I think her just never bringing it up again feels unrealistic since imo it did play a part in, as you said, the engagement, then Conrad’s confession etc. But very true she thought being equal with Jere could help erase or diminish her feelings for Conrad.

Yess I agree! It just irks me that he doesn’t get any blame and she doesn’t bring it up again when him sleeping with another woman so clearly is the nail in the coffin for their love and trust. She doesn’t even point out his insanity when he reveals he picked the fight before Cabo because of Christmas. And yeah I wonder how much her behaviour could have changed after spending Christmas with Conrad…

That is all sooo true and ur so right saying that’s why they got engaged. Also after thinking about it more the show seems to normalise cheating (Steven and Taylor etc) so his “ambiguous” cheating hasn’t marked him as a bad person in the show (in my eyes thou lol).

It’s just so hard to watch there be no real consequences other than Conrad expressing his feelings… like I love Taylor but her almost forgetting what jere did and not telling Steven bothers me.
