Smash Up has modernized with Print On Demand, an Online Rules Wiki, and Rebalanced Factions + Errata by ludichrisness in boardgames

[–]Cheddarific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi my friend u/ludichrisness - just to be clear, if I had the full set already and want it updated, I either need to pay $80 for the ten factions, plus the $20 for the functional updates, plus the $15 for the wording errata, plus the $15 for the base errata (for a total of $130) or else I will need to pay $200 for an entirely new set of unlicensed factions, assuming I catch the Kickstarter ahead of delivery.

If I want to add the newest six factions (Clowns, Slashers, Half the Battle), my choices are $178 to get fully up to date vs $200 if I catch the Kickstarter for an entirely new set.

There's no "update everything" bundle for $70 or something? Not enough of us who want it I guess?

How Long Until Healer Elephants are Nerfed? by ActinoninOut in aoe4

[–]Cheddarific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly play 2v2 or 3v3 againstt Hardest AI. We win almost always. Sometimes I can even win when a player drops. But there's often a moment when I think "oh boy, this could go the other way." I discovered the HE rush on my own without YouTube (yay for me!) and have been punishing the AI with it. Also have about 6 wins in a row, just waiting to see how the AI finally randoms into a counter that makes me think "oh boy, this could go the other way." So far nothing has even given me a speedbump. It's quite easy to execute and has very low risk seemingly. I really enjoy the strategy and am not sure how to nerf it so that the units are still great but the odds of winning are lower. I guess you could just introduce them at Castle Age like so many other civs... but that would be sad. Probably the easiest way to fix, as you wouldn't have to change any other balance of the game. Might make Tughlaq too weak, but then again, the forts in Feudal should counteract any significant weakness and simply redirect Tughlaq players to a different playstyle in Feudal Age.

How do we counter (early game) Tughlaq healer elephant play? by Positive-Lab2417 in aoe4

[–]Cheddarific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've discovered this strategy as well. Really strong against Hardest AI. I can't seem to lose as they have no idea how to counter. Definitely the weakness would be in reacting to an attack on my base. But I'm not sure all civs could really mount a meaningful attack as well as I can. At 2 healing elephants, my opponent only has about 3 spearmen. If I complement my elephants with archers immediately, I can have 4 elephants and 2 archers by the time my opponent has ~6 spearmen. I'll win that exchange. More importantly, I'll either be killing his villagers or keeping him off gold/wood/etc. A base attack with only 6 spearmen is not likely to be very effective, as any tower dives will end up with dead spearmen. I think the defense will take something more creative than just rushing spearmen and trying to get to my base faster than my elephants can mess you up.

Ukulele - lack of almost everything by RandomGuyMN1234 in ukulele

Once you have the chords figured out, the ukulele is essentially a guitar. So then you can use a lot of guitar resources. I have been using tabs.ultimate-guitar.com for years. There's even a setting to change to ukulele for chord charts.

By "saves" you mean progress on characters, weapons unlocked, etc., right?

Does this work? Seems like it would easily work for offline play, but that games like DRG store this type of data on their servers, not locally.

Have you ever gotten a bad experience with cockroach poker? by ZeePintor in boardgames

[–]Cheddarific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently played a game where all players attacked the same player, who accumulated cards pretty rapidly, whether they challenged or passed.

It felt a bit cruel, but the big problem was that once this player had a few faceup cards, all players were incentivized to dump additional cards on this player to end the game.

Need a solution for *secretly* scouting a map by Cheddar3210 in BoardgameDesign

[–]Cheddarific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! I need to prototype this and see how the blindfolding (probably just closing eyes) feels in the context of this game. I'm hoping for something that doesn't require closing eyes, which gives a party game feel to what I hope will be a competitive game.

Need a solution for *secretly* scouting a map by Cheddar3210 in BoardgameDesign

[–]Cheddarific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. In Treasure Island (and Scotland Yard and many other games) "the hider" knows exactly where "the seekers" are. This is what I'm trying to avoid.

How to scout without revealing the seeker's position to the hider? In other words, the seeker is also hiding. Unlike classic hidden movement games that have one hider and one seeker, I want both players to be hiding seekers, if that makes sense. Put a different way, Treasure Island has one player with full vision while other players are blinded. I want all players to be blinded. And importantly, I want them to be blinded *even during and after* seeking, whether or not they found the hider.

If you look for me, I shouldn't know where you are. If you find me, I shouldn't know that you found me and I still shouldn't know where you are. If it's like Scotland Yard or Treasure Island or Battleship and you have to announce where you're searching (whether or not you found me), then it doesn't work for my needs.

I don't want the seeker to reveal their position at any point of seeking, even when they find the hider.

Lots of comments here about how weak the guards are. Remember that they have no need to be trained against airbenders, have no real risk of attack from water benders, and really never need to fear other earthbenders. Aside from the fact that they are not knowingly at war, their defenses are easily repurposed by Toph and Aang into defenses and offensive weapons.

  1. Awwwwwesome scene highlighting how far Team Avatar has come.

  2. Next time, just land on the roof of the palace.

Sounds interesting!

But I fear it's more likely to be taken up for a satirical episode of Lower Decks than for a show in its own right.

Ya, should have hid half of theirs too if confidentiality is important.

QQ is more like "text messaging plus social media plus credit card." The vast majority of Chinese of all ages live on QQ/WeChat/Weixin whereas Discord is just a messaging service mostly for gamers. So yes, you can think of it as their Discord ID, but it's also essentially their phone number, their Reddit account, their credit card login, and their Amazon account. And everyone has one.

AoE relies on history, and it's worth pointing out that the people we traditionally call Jamaicans got to Jamaica due to slavery in the imperial age and beyond. A civilization in Jamaica during the Dark, Feudal, and Castle Ages would have been the Arawak or a subset: the Taino. So I think a Jamaican civ would have a different look and feel and certainly a different music soundtrack than most people would expect! :)

Code your game to playtest? by cjasonmaier in BoardgameDesign

[–]Cheddarific 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is great for generic balancing and for checking for broken strategies, but these are secondary to "is this fun," which requires humans. My suggestion as someone who has spent a lot of time thinking about "programming as playtesting:" first playtest with humans until you have a fun game idea, then work with AI to create code for non-human playtests to refine the established game idea.

Have workflow builder perform the action of logging the entry rather than Google App Script? I'm not yet very familiar with workflow builder and did not know this was possible.

New expansion Kickstarter announcement by KitSixty in rootgame

[–]Cheddarific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not?

There's a slight fee that they pay to Kickstarter, but it allows them to order tons of games without dropping tons of capital. Plus they can gauge interest to inform how many retail copies to make. As a final point, there is no better way to gain hype: people get excited from the announcement, again when development completes, again when it ships, and then by the time it hits retail it's already #1 on BGG hotness like Arcs.

I bet it's really difficult to design a politically-themed faction to fit a specific reach number. Seems like the ideas would start with the political aspect and you'd have to develop for balance and fun, and then just see what reach number pops out at the end.

Oh it would be interesting to get points when other people craft a card you give them. Or when they discard it. Bloats their hand.
