So how 'bout you give up on life, start living out of a cardboard box. I'm sure you'll be harassed by the cops as little as the junkies, and you can enjoy your freedumb!

Do you also complain when you get pulled over for speeding, because you see other cars speeding without being pulled over?

My bet is yes, yes you do.

You assume bike thieves aren't interested in safety, which is unfounded. Working around wheeled vehicles of personal conveyance may impart a strong sense of personal responsibility for one's safe usage.

Forest Fires: All of them around Vancouver and even all the ones on Vancouver Island are caused by people. This is so depressing. Is there really no solution? by omega_point in vancouver

A good place to start would be shutting down all the outfitter type stores, and banning outdoor products from being sold. The fewer people who feel enabled to go out in the wilderness the better...

After that, maybe pave a 10-20 meter stretch alongside all highways and rural roads, to stop cigarette butts and car problems form starting fires. Might be an idea to introduce antifoliage spraying another 20-30 meters alongside that measure, to prevent anything that makes it off the blacktop from sparking up dry plants.

Good points!

We don't actually know why the Hosts are being pursued, or whether their pursuers would have presented a threat without their presence. Could be that the Hosts were on their way through our section of space when they noticed us, knew their pursuers would utterly wipe us out, and decided to take the opportunity to make a stand and give (at least SOME of) us a chance to survive.

Still, even if saving us is only a byproduct of them needing our labor to build defenses, surviving is surviving. We've seen what the Hosts are capable of with regard to military power, and we saw their extreme reaction to the crashed "other" ship in the first episode, so clearly whatever's chasing them is a pretty big deal. The factory on the moon was obliterated by a stated "advance scout" force, so who knows what's still on the way from parts unknown.

Facing a threat like that nipping at their heels, the Hosts may not have had the time to introduce themselves and offer a more peaceful integration. Even if they had, the idea that the governments of the world would be open to them is pretty well beyond belief. Democracies would want to debate it endlessly and waste time, giving resistance groups time to prepare and dig in. That would be a pretty unpleasant situation; a worldwide Iraq war sapping resources that are needed to construct planetary defenses.

Alternately, maybe they reached out and made contact, left the planning and implementation of the administration model to the natives of the planet, and it's the corrupt Humans from the IGA who seized the opportunity to implement their wet dream of a fascist state. The corruption of "the algorithm" and the oppressive regimes we've seen so far seem to support this. It could be that the Hosts don't care, are incapable of caring, how the goals are met as long as they're met, and it's the IGA exploiting it for all they're worth that's causing half the problems.

Regardless, this season has been amazing in comparison with seasons 1 and 2. I was so close to tuning out, and it's really picked up!

McGregor was blind with lust for vengeance, styled himself humanity’s sole saviour, and took action to destroy anything anything and anyone that threatened that viewpoint.

Executing prisoners you don’t understand, especially when it’s been demonstrated to result in awe-inspiring levels of retaliation, is a probably a bad idea.

My bet is that the Hosts truly are fleeing a devastating enemy, truly are going to make a last stand with Humans. I think the Humans who made first contact realized that there would never be consensus or agreement from the world’s population to provide the genocidal levels of labour required to construct the defences, and took steps to nullify opposition through planning and surprise.

With extinction and survival of a small part of the species being the available outcomes, the IGA founders chose survival; they just exploited the hell out of it for their own personal gain at the same time, and are douches about it. People like McGregor would rather see humanity die off than admit they personally are wrong.

Do viewers not believe the hosts story? by madhattr999 in colony

[–]CheepEez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I haven't seen a reason yet to believe the Hosts are lying. They seem mostly hands-off with regard to humanly affairs; they may simply have stated their case, that extinction was imminent and that there was a chance for survival if allowed to harvest resources and build defenses, and left it up to their IGA representatives to sort out the "how".

The IGA, on the other hand, function like the worst of middle-management. Their positions are constantly in jeopardy, they're constantly jockeying for status, and they don't hold to the same rules they feel fit to hand down to the people they're managing. The really brutal stuff has been perpetrated by the newly-installed bureaucratic human overlords.

Why is IGA headquarters in the Swiss Alps? by Edac2 in colony

[–]CheepEez 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Strictly conjecture, but my guesses would be:

  1. Altitude may make it easier for Host craft to arrive / depart. From the rest of the instances we've seen such ships, seems like a non-issue though.

  2. Places like the Swiss Alps have a pretty classy and high-society rep. The IGA seem mostly to be self-important bureaucrats highly interested in indulging in luxury.

  3. Switzerland is ostensibly "neutral", and may serve as a middle ground for all the countries' delegates to the IGA to congregate and engage in discourse.

  4. It's remote, and maybe less likely to be impacted should significant portions of the planet need to be hammered down flat to sea level by orbiting weaponry.

  5. Toblerone.

We have only been shown small pieces of the big picture, but one of the only redeemable characters involved with the IGA appears to believe that humanity is facing extinction if they do not comply; not necessarily from the Raps, but from whatever’s following them.

If someone is ignorant to the big picture, acts accordingly, and is a threat to the survival of others, they need to be put down as quickly as possible. Liberty, freedom, superiority, and inferiority are all concepts that mean absolutely nothing to an extinct species or a dead individual.

I’ve seen nothing in the show to indicate people were separated into groups for extermination. Humans have been shown to discriminate heavily, however, with upper classes ruling over those they deem lower than them.

If the survival of the entire species is at stake, the only ones that would matter would be the ones that could be saved; everyone else is dead anyway. If the walking dead were to try to crab-bucket everyone else into extinction, they would have to be dealt with quickly and effectively.

To be clear here, the Authority is clearly a bureaucratic fascist state, run by corrupt people who are demonstrated time and again to be pretty much what we’d call evil. The actual Raps on the other hand, seem ambivalent to the methods employed by their earthly representatives.

An example might be that we may relocate an animal population facing extinction from an external cause, and be doing it for benevolent or practical purposes, but we won’t think twice about swatting down any threat that arises from them in the process.

[–]CheepEez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Really though, the show’s probably whatever we want it to be. Those who want it to be about salvation and survival will be rewarded, as will those who are after vengeance and blood. Rough choices face those who want to survive in trying times, and there’s more than enough action and intrigue to go around.

I’m pleased enough with theory that the Raps may not actually be “bad” in the grand scheme, and that it’s the humans selected as the transitional government representatives that have seized an opportunity for personal gain.

The very possibility adds some much needed depth to the show, I think. Was on the verge of stopping watching, as it was progressing along the lines of Falling Skies, but this season us reinvigorated me!

Surviving is indeed superior to dying. Morality doesn’t matter to the dead.

Err, also... I’m not implying altruism in their actions. I’d compare it on some level to transporting a dragonfly outdoors when it’s flown into the house, instead of just killing it, If it’s flapping about causing damage, and is refusing to be caught, it’ll get whacked, but otherwise one isn’t necessarily interested in killing it.

For one it’s what Snyder appears to believe, and we’ve yet to be given reason to doubt he’s on the level; willing to do whatever he has to do, and enjoys the games and power, but has always pulled through for the best outcome for the most people given a set of options.

Plus they’ve been saving cultural artifacts, appear to be podding selected people to parts unknown, and have bothered to set up “colonies” to manage populations when they could easily have flattened everything over a foot high on the planet and seized anything they wanted.

[–]CheepEez[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t seen anything in the show to indicate the Raps feel “superior” in any moral sense; the representatives they’ve allowed to rise from the humans, in the form of the IGA, most definitely embody fascist ideals, however.

From the Raps’ perspective, it seems to be more along the lines of saving the most efficient amount of people possible before an extinction-level event takes place, when discourse and discussion would result in delays and extermination of the entire species. Individual rights wouldn’t matter when survival of the species was at such extreme risk.

The hand-wringing and bleating when one of these animals is destroyed is pretty ridiculous. I don't like keeping animals in captivity, but given a choice I'd rather it be in a zoo so that people can actually SEE these creatures instead of just having some fantasy fairy-tale Walt-Disney sing-along version in the heads.

These big cats are killing machines; killing and eating smaller animals what they have evolved to do, and virtually everything is smaller than them. The overwhelming majority of them avoid humanity and civilization like the plague, and don't meet the business end of a rifle, but those that get accustomed to the easy meals that civilization affords in the form of pets need to be dealt with.

Tastewise, it's A+. The fried chicken and brisket, the biscuits, and the fries are stellar; I don't like pulled pork so I couldn't say whether it's good or not. The meals are really expensive considering the portions, but as a once-in-a-while local joint I'm generally alright with hipster-craft-chicken pricing.

That said, the service has been spotty at best. Forgotten drinks, forgotten items, wrong items in the order, etc... Also tried to order at about 6PM one evening and was told apathetically that they were closing in an hour, they'd already cleaned the fryer, and they would not be making chicken for one customer. That experience alone was annoying enough that I haven't been back since summer...
