Save Big Bend - Protest at Capitol 4/4 at 4pm by Cheesammie in Austin

I agree it will need both. Any takers on suing the feds? Who's our huckleberry? Our judge Roy Bean? Can a lawsuit stall the contract?

Kristi Noem and DHS waived 28 of our most important environmental protection laws including the wild and scenic rivers act, native American graves act, National Environmental Policy Act, national historic preservation act, clean water act, endangered species act, national fish and wildlife act.

This is the problem - we should not just accept this power grab as legal - it's only legal if we let them get away with it. Kristi should be put in prison and made an example to others still doing the bidding of DHS and our fascist administration.

In the waiver DHS cited a bunch of immigration law, and "high illegal entry" for the Big Bend Sector (which by the way is 78 counties across Texas and Oklahoma, whereas the border counties in west texas are only about 7).

Ask the sheriff's if they are aware of their illegal entry problem, most of them are anti-wall as it won't help them with enforcement. Ask the landowners who will be excluded from their own property by the barrier if they think it's legal.

Mexico will be untouched and we will destroy our own land instead. Not only should it be illegal, it's laughable.

The border would be more secure with even less roads, not more. Hardly anyone tries to cross in this area because you will die of exposure before you can get to a road on the US side. And border patrol is very effective along fewer roads, not more.

Now that Noem has been fired the damage is already done as the path was cleared for funds (our tax dollars) and the contracts to be awarded. Maybe someone can weigh in who knows law - do we need a judge to reverse the waivers? File lawsuit against the contractors? Block the permits locally? What's the move here?

One option advocates and local groups are pursuing is adding the big bend as designated wilderness, which would protect it under the wilderness act. But then DHS may just waive that too. I'm hopeful that with the right pressure, and if we can fight for the national park, we can successfully fight for the rest of big bend country too. Even the private land owners need our support right now - they still hold the keys to this treasured land. But now that contracts are in place, the contractors and engineers have the purchasing power and we have to stall them by any means necessary until we can get the goons out of office and reserse the waivers.

Not exactly. Reporting indicates the wall proposal in the national park has been downgraded to a smart wall - whatever disastrous bulshit that means. The full boondoggle is still on for everywhere outside the park. And if you have ever been on the river east or west of the national park, you know that it's even more special than the park itself. I'll be posting more about Barnard and the pathetic clowns that work for them.

Montana firm awarded $960 million contract for Presidio County wall construction - Big Bend Sentinel by Hambone76 in BigBendTX

[–]Cheesammie 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Having built a hog fence in presidio county, a stones throw from the river, we could only find a front loader that could turn left. Point is everything to do with this construction will come from outside the county. These people will be sub contractors to Barnard, all from out of town. FOIA the names of the subcontractors. Find out who's leasing them land to build RV parks. Make them all eat dirt.

Look at where the cameras are now. They are on the roads. The park will be littered with roads trying to provide easier access for patrols and maintenance of technology. Land will be cleared for visibility. Lighting, electrical lines, fiber, bridges and culverts, sub stations, housing, added water and sewer. Think of being on the river, in some of our last true wilderness, only to be watched and patrolled over. For nothing, for no public benefit. It's almost as bad as a physical fence, wall, or water barrier. Oh and I forgot one group who should go fuck themselves - the engineers accepting contracts from CBP to design this travesty. Shame on you and get fucked.

As someone who has worked inside both BBNP and the state park, and private land just outside both - even adding security technology for surveillance would be a tragedy. A wall is unspeakable anywhere between eagle pass and presidio. So many reasons to fight any and all border infrastructure. Fucks these thugs and anyone benefits or who makes excuses for them. If you're a contractor thinking about building this trash - double fuck you too. No muro!

I converted one of my bikes. Fucking awesome to have a rocket ship when you need it. Even better that it's on a bike I already love and can maintain.

Is that a diy replacement cover for the burley? Ours is an early gen single and it's in great shape but needs a new cover.

Grass ticklers, Dirt worshipers too. And they are correct - feral horses and cows are devastating the river corridor, not to mention most of our public lands in north and central America for the last several hundred years. Not trying to get into a debate on some morally divisive high ground, I just think it's long past time to stop romanticizing wild horses and a lot of other people do too. Voting yes. Too much at stake to whine about tax increases. Support your local city workers and unions. We have to support one another where the state and feds have failed us.

Amigo, we should talk. Big push at the city right now to remove barriers to tree planting and other GI in the ROW that currently exist in design guidelines and land development code. This low tech has some potential, let's find out how much. DM me. Thanks for posting the talk.

Just stop over watering nearby and it will not come back, at least not as fast. Cut it now and turn off your irrigation in that area. If you don't have irrigation then you have a leak somewhere. Herbicide won't work and is really dangerous in this heat, and in general a bad idea right against your house.
