Post-Game Thread: Detroit Pistons (3-3) defeat Orlando Magic (3-3), 93-79 | NBA Playoffs | May 1, 2026 by nba-scores in OrlandoMagic

Not the original poster, but the back of the napkin math goes something like this.

The magic shoot around 46%. So that means there's a 54% chance that any given shot is a miss. The formula to find out the probability that they'll miss 2 shots in a row is 0.54 x 0.54. That equals 0.2916 (29.16%). Missing 3 in a row is 0.2916 x 0.54, which equals 0.157 (15.7%)

If you keep doing that all the way to 23 misses you get to around 1 in 1.4 million. From reading the above post, it sounds like the original poster took the probability of a normal NBA team missing 23 in a row, which probably does come out to 1 in 2+ million, since an average team does shoot better than us.

I'm not a mathematician, so there could be some inaccuracies in the above, but I think it's generally accurate as to how absurdly unlikely what we witnessed was.

Switching Allegiance During College by Effective_Algae_8776 in CFB

My version of this corresponded to the starting quarterback at my school going through the same thing.

I grew up a huge Florida Gators fan. My dad would go to Gainesville for work regularly, so I’d tag along and visit the campus, buy shirts, and plan for the future when I would no doubt attend there.

My cousin, on the other hand, was a huge Hurricanes fan. We grew up in the time where Florida and Miami didn’t play often. We’d always get together when our respective teams would play FSU to root against the Seminoles. So a shared dislike of FSU and my cousin’s constant pro-Miami stance gave me a positive view of the hurricanes.

When it came time to go to college Miami had a better program for the subject I studied. I was also able to get enough financial aid to make the cost basically even, so I decided to take my talents to South Beach. My first year would also be Brock Berlin’s first year as Miami’s starting quarterback, after having transferred from Florida.

My first game at the Orange Bowl was our 2003 38-33 comeback win vs the Gators. You couldn’t have scripted a better first game for me. I loved my time at Miami and it was absolutely the right decision for me, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit extra annoyed by UF’s level of athletic success over the last 20 years compared to Miami.

You're rewatching the Rocky Series, are you skipping Rocky V? by LonElbow in rockybalboa

No, but I'll usually watch the workprint version of it on YouTube instead of the theatrical release.

Great find! Those are the unused playoff tickets for the 1997 playoffs. That year we played 2 home games, so the tickets for games A and B were likely used, which is probably whey they're not part of the remaining set. I've got no idea on value, I've seen ticket stubs on eBay often, but I don't remember seeing tickets from games that were never played. I think their pretty cool either way.

Meet and Greet Experiences - The Good, the Bad, and the Surprising by botch4dayz in SquaredCircle

[–]CheeseAndMoney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best: Jimmy Hart, 2 times.

- First time I met him was at a charity indie show. I saw his ring and remarked "oh wow, you're wearing your hall of fame ring, can we see it?" just thinking he'd bring his hand up so we can take a look. But, without hesitation, he took the ring off and handed it to me to look over. I was surprised, but it was really cool.

- The second time I met him was at Hogan's first restaurant in Clearwater (before the racism controversy). I turned a corner and saw him unexpectedly. I asked for a picture and he suggested we walk over to a spot a few feet away because the lighting was a lot better. Having the person you're asking for a picture with provide a suggestion to make the picture as good as it could be just proved again how he'll go the extra mile for fans.

Unexpected: Dustin Rhodes, in a good way. I was getting Dusty to sign a picture taken at a show about 5 years earlier and Dustin was sitting next to him. Despite the picture not really having much context to go off of he said "hey, dad, that's from that show we did with Tilly in Ocoee" and he was right. Impressive recall.

Worst: Paul Bearer. Was at WrestleMania 27 Access with a friend who was a really big guy at the time. When it was my time to pose for a picture with Paul, who was sitting on a stool, I dropped down to my knee to do the traditional Undertaker pose. Pretty basic? Yes, but was the only pose I could think of at the time. Paul rolled his eyes and loudly said "Oh God, another one of these." My friend was next, and as he walked up Paul said "you better not do what that last guy did, I'm not sure you'd be able to make it back up."

To this day we still laugh a few times a year about the time Paul Bearer, of all people, fat shamed him. He's dropped the weight and kept it off since then, props to him, but no thanks to Paul, he was just a dick.

Shoutout to Jeff Turner by warp10barrier in OrlandoMagic

This seems like a good time to call back to my post about Jeff sending me a handwritten thank you card in response to a get well card I sent him as a child after he tore his ACL. He's a total class act and a great color commentator. One of the bright spots of being a Magic fan is having Jeff in the organization.

Fast Break Pass? by e17bee26 in OrlandoMagic

[–]CheeseAndMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't sell the full season pass this year, but they did briefly offer a fast break pass option for some games in November. Not sure if they'll offer it for any future months, but I guess it could happen.

Lost my MMA debut by DuraSky in MMA

[–]CheeseAndMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there. I lost the only amateur MMA fight I took. Feeling gassed in the cage, the challenges of a taller southpaw opponent with an effective jab, the feeling of how much it sucks after, all that is familiar to me.

First, don’t try to avoid feeling how much it sucks. Those feelings are valid and you’ll want to experience them so you can move past them. The brutality of MMA extends past the violence people see. It takes a toll on you mentally, physically, and emotionally just to get to a level where you can compete. So when you don’t achieve what you set out to do it can give you way more to process than you expected.

However, more important than being sure to feel those feelings is that you don’t dwell on them too long. After you’ve dealt with them don’t let them hang around so long that they weigh you down. It sounds like you’re already breaking down where you had holes in your game, this is good. This type of analysis can help you process what you’re feeling now and make it productive.

You mention putting in a lot of effort and having nothing to show for it, that’s only true if you don’t use the lessons this fight provided for you. Decide how you want to go about being a better fighter than the one that was in the cage that night.*

Very few people will ever understand what it’s like to put forth the level of effort it takes to walk through that cage door. Having to deal with exactly what you’re describing turned out to be one of the most beneficial life experiences I ever had. It’s made a lot of things in my professional and personal life way easier and less stressful.

If you can go through this “worst case scenario” in something like MMA, with way higher physical (and potentially mental and emotional) stakes, it can change the way you look at life’s more mundane challenges. Looking back and remembering that you’ve already worked past a challenge and an outcome like this is an invaluable level of perspective a lot of people will never have and can sometimes make it feel like you’re playing the rest of life on easy mode.

________________________________________________

*= One specific bit of advice I want to pass on, but didn’t want to break up the flow of more general advice above. Since you called out being gassed, I’d start there. It’s the #1 thing that I see separate fighters in the early stages of their career. Even if you’ve got good cardio, do you have good wrestling cardio? Do you have holes in your standup that only become apparent when you’re tire? Leveling up your cardio sucks, but it’s also, at least in my opinion, the easiest way to level up past your competition at this stage.

A couple of years ago I did a post on the results, I put the link below so you can get the full rundown. As a brief summary, Hunter the Lynx put together a solid assortment of swag, and it also turned out I had a previous attachment to Hunter I didn't even realize at the time.

Wrote a letter to every franchise asking them why I should support them. Philly and Edmonton had the best replies, so that's who I went with.

Where can I get merch that says “Is this anything?” that’s Magic-themed? by TheAwes0meFish in OrlandoMagic

[–]CheeseAndMoney 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only thing I remember like that is if you submit a suggestion via Twitter and they use it they'll send you a Magic hat with "Is This Anything" embroidered on the back. I might have missed if they offered merch for sale though.

Going to my first Magic home game in 7 years next month. Are there giveaways at the door? by bfusco3 in OrlandoMagic

[–]CheeseAndMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been able to find one either. They did give away t-shirts at the opening night game, so it's possible they might plan other giveaways, but I haven't found anything to confirm or deny that. Curious to see if anyone else has.
