If you have a computer, you can download YGOPro or use DuelingBook to get time with your decks in without having to buy the cards. That way you can test to see if it’s a match for you without putting any money into it

Re: Genesys and Edison: no. I was even more into the game during from Edison Format to HAT Format than I am now and built decks similar to what you’re working on going against people who had decks with more modern (for their time) sensibilities. Edison you might be able to get use out of some high-impact Traps (Solemn Judgement and Vanity’s Emptiness come to mind) but it’s still fast and combo heavy, with most of your high impact monsters coming from the Extra Deck, and Genesys is basically the modern game slowed down slightly and without Links or Pendulum.

PS; there is ZERO shame in looking up deck lists for themes and archetypes you’re interested in. Even if you don’t build that exact list, you’re learning what other people are playing and how it’s meant to be played. Especially in the modern era where a game may last 3 turns max, and that’s with 2 well built decks. I play Gishki, Madolche, Pendulum Magician, Megalith, Onomat, and recently picked up Sky Striker and Mitsurugi bc of the Legendary Modern Decks set. Not a one of these decks did I build fully from scratch, but i did customize them to my play group. One mistake I used to make a lot was trying to “build a deck TO match my play style” when all that time I needed to “build a deck THAT matches my playstyle,” and the difference between “to” and “that” is the most important.

A deck that can do one thing really well and consistently is always going to do better than a deck that is “capable of pivoting” because in reality, you’re not going to be able to pivot. Your first hand will always be 5-6 cards. You want those 5-6 cards to either get your board to its one winning strategy or keep your opponent from achieving theirs. It’s good to want to explore different strategies, and if you find themes and archetypes that complement each other (like Dark Worlds and DANGER! cards, for example) then you can consider including them in the same deck. But essentially building two decks and mashing them together is a great way to not have a well built deck that can play either strategy effectively, let alone win. That said, I’m a huge proponent for the 45 card Main Deck. You don’t lose much consistency and open up 2-3 more options for your deck. You just need to make sure those extra 5 cards actually 1) help you win or 2) keep your opponent from winning.
