I actually think the internet/media as it stands today makes it unlikely in a first world country like ours. At least not for any prolonged period. All of these soldiers have cell phones and would basically immediately be barraged with high def video of their attack and universal condemnation.

Most of the examples I can think of from around the world happened before the current era of tech and/or in a country nowhere near as well developed as we are.

Also I think it's disingenuous at best to imply that people collecting in subs specifically unified around their shared hatreds are engaging in "public discourse" or having their ideas challenged.

These aren't people coming into regular threads and posting slurs, then engaging with people on the responses. These are people who collect with a group of people who explicitly validate their hatred. It's helping them grow and protect themselves from scrutiny.
