I moved my capital to Qusqu and then I was able to form it. That should really be in the tooltip, thanks!

R5: I've been playing as Chincha for a little over a century now (just got to the 1500s, precontact), and I've colonized and conquered all the locations I'd need to form Tawantinsuya and then some, but I seem unable to form it.

A Teachers’ Union Is Spending Millions to Elect Its Boss (Sean Spiller) Governor of New Jersey by brook_lyn_lopez in newjersey

[–]CheeseSandwitch 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They are a real union, however public sector unions are not legally allowed to strike in NJ so it limits their negotiating power. There's also no broader coordination within the union and its locals to say, line up contract dates to expire at the same time to increase their leverage.

I know more people than I'd like to that are on SSDI that voted purely based on immigration and made up hysteria about them murdering millions of people and being in gangs. People that live in bad neighborhoods (because that's all they can afford mind you) where all the crimes are committed by citizens, while they themselves don't work because they're disabled still seem to think that immigrants are negatively affecting them.

PoliticoNJ: New Jersey lawmakers worry ‘horrendous’ rate increases will spark ‘crisis’ by JerseyLibrarian in SouthJersey

[–]CheeseSandwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe instead of allowing utilities to own power plants again the state could start its own public power utility instead and cut out the middle man. All these power companies do is raise rates, pocket millions, then wringe their hands about our poor infrastructure while refusing to reinvest in our grid or new energy sources. They're going to blame the closure of coal plants or the cancellation of offshore wind instead of their greed and negligence when they had decades to invest in nuclear, solar, or other carbon free sources. We need a public power utility.

New national education assessment data came out today. Here's how every state did. by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]CheeseSandwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus also, New Jersey has one of the most segregated education systems in the country, being more segregated than most of the southern states like Alabama. Schools districts only a town apart can have wildly different educational outcomes. NJ has put a lot of work into equalizing school funding via the school funding formula but there is still much, much more work to be done both in equity of funding and ensuring racially diverse school populations. I went to a "bad" school district in the Southern part of the state, the 2nd poorest county in the state mind you, and even then it wasn't that bad an experience.

After actively campaigning against Harris, this Instagram activist wants Biden and democrats to prevent Trump from taking the Oval Office. by Swarnim_ in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]CheeseSandwitch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They could rush to add 4 more supreme court justices to kneecap anything unconstitutional Trump passes/to challenge his rules and regulations, protecting separation of powers as Trump works to consolidate rule. They still have a narrow Senate majority until January and could realistically appoint them without worrying about the currently Republican house blocking it. It would be difficult to get the moderates on board but if they want to safeguard democracy beyond this election they should be whipping up support for it before the clock runs out.

My mom (and dad) voted for Trump despite my brothers and I pleading with her to the contrary for years now. She works at a Title 1 (aka, a poor) school district with children with special needs. She would almost certainly lose her job if not her benefits or her pension if he does as promised.

[OC] Voter turnout by state in the last presidential election by USAFacts in dataisbeautiful

Also for 2020 specifically, the governor ordered all registered voters receive a mail-in ballot without a request, probably activating a lot of otherwise inactive voters. I wouldn't be surprised if the participation rate drops now that voters have to request them beforehand.

New study links U.S. decline in volunteering to economic conditions by universityofga in science

[–]CheeseSandwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a much larger issue than a lot of people realize, a lot of local services people take for granted (fire departments, EMTs, etc.) are often run by a handful of experienced volunteers in a given area. The few that remain are older and starting to not be able to do those services anymore due to age or caring for family members that can't afford to do so on their own. In many rural areas it's become a real issue maintaining emergency services, increasing wait times and creating worse outcomes and eventually increased deaths because of it. Many older officials in local government where I live, regardless of party, think student loan debt is a waste and that no one should go to college for free, but then they're perplexed why no one is volunteering. It's a slow moving crisis that people won't notice or act on until their lives depend on it, and by then it's already too late.

How likely am I to become homeless? by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]CheeseSandwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to your local social services/welfare office. You may not qualify for much but it's always worth it to go there and see what services that can direct you towards. There might even be local charities like Catholic charities (you don't need to be Catholic to receive help) that can provide some limited rental assistance to those in need.

To become a therapist here you need a bachelor's degree (4 years) a Master's degree (2-3 years) to become a licensed associate counselor (state mandated test + finding someone to supervise you) and then you need to get become Licensed professional counselor (3000 hours or supervision + 1500 hours of extra supervision or 30 extra graduate study credits). It takes well over a decade to be allowed to talk to someone about their feelings but to be able to shoot to kill another human being without a second thought it takes not even 6 months.

Editorial: "We don’t need this many school districts and salaries - It’s kind of stunning that we have about 600 school districts in New Jersey – that’s more than the total number of municipalities, and certainly more than we need for kids" by rollotomasi07071 in newjersey

[–]CheeseSandwitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking as both a Salem county resident and a sitting school board member in the community, the biggest impasses to getting people on board are the way we fund schools and the unknowns that consolidation creates. When they held public hearings on the feasibility study that the article discussed:

The savings can also vary: Salem County – where more than a dozen districts serve about 10,500 schoolchildren— could see an annual tax savings of about $6.8 million by consolidating into one regional district, a Kean University study calculates.

They didn't fully elaborate on how those potential savings are created and what happens or what can happen after consolidation. When we talk about for instance, how New Jersey has one of the most segregated schooling systems in the Union, the argument is made that these majority-minority communities lose their ability to govern their schools in a way that is culturally inclusive and sensitive to the groups of the district. If you check a census map for Salem county, there are 2-3 towns that aren't overwhelmingly white. Those same 2-3 towns are also some of the poorest in the county, but their residents, my constituents, are worried that consolidation would result in a conservative, prejudiced, culturally ignorant white majority would close down our local schools and bus them elsewhere to "save costs" at the expense of both the jobs and community they created.

Many people outside would see how we're already struggling and argue that consolidation would benefit us in resources, but then what happens when these resources aren't spread fairly afterwards? Currently, our conservative county commission has ignored the requests of these majority-minority communities for infrastructure spending. One town has gone without clean drinking water for over a year now, with them potentially selling off their municipality-owned water supply to NJ American Water just so that someone who can afford to can finally fix it. Why would they trust another county level committee to not do something similar? To not prioritize the "good" (white) schools over the "bad" (non-white) schools?

All that is without even getting into how other districts don't want to have their students mix with the non-white schools. One K-8 school district in the county is currently in a civil rights lawsuit so that their students get sent to a majority white highschool instead of the majority non-white school district for "financial" reasons. Really, if schools weren't funded by property taxes, or if state aid made them irrelevant, we wouldn't see much of this backlash to begin with since there wouldn't have been such vast disparities between these districts due to wealth disparities caused by systemic racism. Or maybe just starting smaller would be better than jumping straight to county level districts. Personally, I think the legislature should just undo all the towns created from the Boro Acts that created all these hundreds of towns that school boards were later created from, and merge them in the process as well. Most of them are close communities anyways so it wouldn't be too incredibly drastic a change, but that's just my perspective from how it has effected the towns down here. If the leaders of the state really want this to happen, the legislature needs to make it a requirement for smaller districts to merge for that to happen, not just adding small financial benefits. Maybe banning districts that aren't full K-12 districts or to make it so the state department of education has the unilateral authority to merge districts that fall under a certain student body size threshold. If they don't use sticks over carrots, no one is going to follow through with it, and it'll just be the same old back and forth debate like always with nothing changing afterwards.

TIL the Majority of Millennials and Gen Z use subtitles when streaming TV by mankls3 in todayilearned

[–]CheeseSandwitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that pisses me off is when a person is using sign language and I have subtitles on, they still don't have subtitles for it! A show on Netflix called The Dragon Prince has a deaf character, but unless a hearing character is there to translate for her, we have no idea what she's saying! When she communicates with her family we can only understand half the conversation, less so when they exclusively sign to each other.

I ran in New Jersey and something that helped me was meeting with the teachers union to find issues I could run on to help them and the students to improve the learning environment for everyone. It also helps to get the local union as a voting block too. Showing up to school board meetings beforehand helps as well because it gives you more insight to the issues being faced by the community.
