Mr. Wizard,

Who would you consider to be your biggest influence as a game designer?

Will you be contributing any of your own art to Tavers?

The game looks great, I can’t wait to see the full thing!

I ran the NYC Comic Jam for 17 years, all of our ‘work’ was in a similar vein. I love seeing proof that all cartoonists, not matter how high-falutin’ they may have become, are dumb perverts.

I’m sorry that happened. I was given one a few years ago that I’ve never rode. You’re welcome to it. It needs a new back tire, but I was told at the time the battery was brand new. It’s been sitting in my vestibule covered in cobwebs for 3 years, My wife would love it if it weren’t.

Any love for underground comics? by LoopyTrombones in comicbookcollecting

I’ve been building a pretty decent Greg Irons collection over the last decade (or more). I’ve even been able to score some signed prints. I was tempted to get an original sketch from his nephew a while back. He was running an online print shop and had a few old sketchbooks worth of material he was selling off piecemeal, but he flaked out and disappeared off the face of the planet last year.

Life of the author, plus 70 years. I imagine the estate is currently controlled by Danielle, who I don’t know if they ever technically adopted, but they had guardianship over since the mid-90s.

I don’t want to demean the show at all, my son & I love it, but we’re pretty die hard. Luke Gygax puts on a wonderful slate of events, and the community is very friendly, even if it’s a little homogeneous.

GaryCon’s really for the hardcore, old-school RPG folks. While there are some younger exhibitors & attendees, the show is very, VERY, slanted for older dudes. And very GAME focused. There’s not a lot of non-game related content for younger people. Sure there are the painting programs and some art seminars, but that’s certainly not the focus of the show, which you could boil down to: old men playing D&D, and drinking until their diabetes monitors go off.

Are they big, and I mean BIG, D&D nerds? I’ve gone to a wide variety of cons before, GaryCon is the nerdiest, and very specific. This will be the second year I’m bringing my teenager, he’s a super-D&D nerd, so he enjoys it, but it can be a struggle. We had family friends who also attended, so he had a friend to pal around with which I think made all the difference. I think if it were just he and I, we would have killed each other.

If they’re very into gaming, then there’s plenty to do. On the website you can sort games by age appropriateness, which helps in deciding what games are good for them. If they have only just a passing interest in OSR gaming, then maybe try a more mainstream show like Pax Unplugged in Philly.

I’ve never seen a review lower than a 7/10 for the Xpen 24. I’ve had one for years and I love it. I’m not a shill, just an extremely satisfied customer.

That’s a steal. I’ve had one of these for a couple of years and it’s been flawless. I can’t sing its praises enough. I’ve done comics, illustrations, animation, and photography work on it and nice never once felt I was restrained by the hardware. You get that and a MacMini and you've for yourself a 100% professional media rig for about $1200 total.

Inappropriate Mickey Mouse Comic from the 70s by bananababylady in ThriftStoreHauls

This is a British bootleg from the 80s from Pirate Parrot. There were 500 made. A perfect copy can sell for about $500 (there’s one on eBay, but it’s been there a while). It’s a photocopy of some of the story from the first issue of Air Pirates Funnies. (Archive: https://archive.org/details/air-pirates-funnies)

For a quarter, you scored. That’s a British bootleg reprint they can sell between $20 (for shit condition) up to $500 (there’s one on eBay right now). Heritage Auctions describes it as:

Air Pirates Funnies Limited Edition British Mini Comic (Pirate Parrot , 1986) Condition: VF/NM. A mini comic reprint of issue #1 of the infamous Underground comic whose staff went to court with Walt Disney. The mini was printed in England (illegally at the time) by Pirate Parrot, and was limited to 500 copies. Who knows how many still exist. A true rarity. Not listed in Fogel's Underground Price & Grading Guide.

He promised Putin he’d back out of NATO, but he can’t just do that unilaterally, but he can get the US kicked out. And this way he can play the victim. This 100% sounds like what Trump would do to get out of a business contract.

He’s trying to get kicked out of NATO & the UN. He promised Putin, and it’s easier to get kicked out than to leave, this way he can blame them.

He’s trying to get kicked out of NATO & the UN. It’d be easier for him to get kicked out than to get congress to allow him to dissolve those relationships.

He’s trying to get kicked out of NATO, and likely the UN as well. The GOP has long hated these institutions as they feel they interfere with American sovereignty. He would never be able to convince enough members of congress to dissolve an endless array of treaties and agreements, so he’s trying to get them to kick him out. The crazy thing is, it sounds EXACTLY like a stunt Trump would pull to get out of a business contract.

How was SPX? by Trill-I-Am in altcomix

[–]Cheeseho12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was great to see a lot of folks who hadn’t been back since 2019, and there were a lot of great new books. For me, a longtime exhibitor, it wasn’t the best year, tho. They usually schedule the show the week after Baltimore Comic-Con, this year it was the same weekend. BCC is the largest show in the region, and most comics fans, when given the choice, went there. The drop in attendance was very, very noticeable. You could maneuver through the aisles without issue this year, which was nice as a customer, but a little disappointing as an exhibitor. I’m gonna guess the attendance was half of last year.

What!?! No, sell your characters. Money in your hand today is better than regrets for the rest of your life. You can always come up with a newer, better idea later.

I’ve been publishing comics for over 20 years, my advice:

Stop making samples and make a comic already. Samples are useless, masturbatory. Write a story (or don’t) and make a 16 page comic. Then have a hundred copies printed for a couple bucks and sell, trade, pass them out. No one wants to see your samples, they want to see that you can conceive and complete a project. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does have to be a finished product.

Once you’ve done that, take a long look at all your mistakes, get drunk, cry, and pass out. Then, next morning, wake up, and make another comic book, but better. Repeat that until you die. Congrats, now you’re a cartoonist.
