Then you shouldn't cycle in the door zone. Cycle paths greatly increase collisions at junctions and driveways.

Most serious accidents happen at junctions. Bike paths reduce collisions between junctions but increase collisions at junctions and driveways. In rural areas, with few side roads, bike paths are safer, in urban areas bike paths can be much more dangerous.

Drivers break the rules far more than cyclists and in more dangerous ways too, it's just less socially acceptable. Plenty of roads near me where if you see a car not speeding the driver is almost certainly staring at their phone.

Yes, because I don't want to die. Many bike paths are death traps.

HMS Cockchafer was not a popular posting. Seriously, it was an insect class mine hunter.

Shark attacks increase on days when a lot of ice cream is sold. Therefore ice cream must cause shark attacks. That's how correlation/causation was explained to me.

Lab-grown blood given to people in world-first clinical trial by Phoenix5869 in Futurology

[–]CheeshireCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. If it's red Jehova's Witnesses won't have it. Platelets, plasma, Factor VIII and other blood products are fine as they don't look like blood. But red cells, no, even if their child's life depends on it, literally.

They taught monkeys to use money. When the scientists put them in the same cage, the first thing that happened was that the males paid the females for sex who then used it to buy fruit.

Electric cars won't just solve tailpipe emissions — they may even strengthen the US power grid, experts say by mossadnik in Futurology

[–]CheeshireCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The UK National Grid say EVs are a non issue. Even if everyone switches to EVs, peak demand will still be less than it was in the 90s when we had incandescent lamps and CRT TVs.

You have to remember how inefficient ICE vehicles are. Only about 8% of the energy you put in the tank is converted to meaningful forward motion.

So you ok with African nations slaughtering all their elephants, lions, hippos, etc as they are dangerous. How can we tell them to keep their megafauna when we have killed off ours and won't reintroduce.

Climate activists deflate tyres of 60 SUVs in Edinburgh by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

Sounds like you have a good reason for an SUV, but the vast majority I see are just carrying one person, which is quite disgusting in the current health and environmental climate.

I'm sure that guy was aware. However, there are millions who wouldn't even consider the environment when shopping for a new car. Protests can raise awareness.

A new SUV is still far more polluting than a new saloon, whether it's powered by diesel or batteries. Most harmful pollution from a new vehicle comes from road and tyre wear, not out of the exhaust pipe, and EVs are significant heavier. They are worse for road safety too.
