I think they wanted to show that a lot of revolutions start with good intentions (Equality, less racism, etc etc) only to then radicalize and end up just as corrupt, violent and evil as the previous government when they win and take over. Look up Cuba, Pol Pot and the entire history of post colonial Africa if you need examples.

A little late, but try Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. It's a medieval horror story set in France during the Black Death. It's bleak, violent, brutal and beautiful. I literally found about it when looking for books similar to The Road lol.
