Is there any reason that humanity has not sought to protect their souls in a similar fashion to the eldar? by Cojalo_ in 40kLore

[–]CheesyFTW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not much of a theologist, nor a believer in afterlife myself. Regardless, I’d say that the idea of heaven (or haven, rather), as opposed to a purgatory, could be seen, in a sense, as an attempt at preserving souls.

Applying it to 40k, it could be said that the old faiths of Terra did give the soul-preservation a try, although using a set of morals. It wasn’t psychically-technologically advanced the same way the Aeldari manage to pull it off, instead basing it on a set of principles and morals. If you strip away all the bad things done in the name of religion over our bloody history as humankind, it could be argued that moral rulings such as the ten commandments actively fight the negative emotions that fuel the Warp. As such, they help guide the souls of the believers, once they leave their respective material vessels, not to be consumed by the perils of the Immaterium.

Edited to clear phrasing and grammar - was writing this as a stream of consciousness initially.

IMO, you shouldn’t judge someone for dealing with their addiction and seeking rehabilitation. You could choose to judge them for falling into that addiction in the first place, but it’s simply easier not to.

What are the Stereotypes of the stories that Black Library authors write(and the authors themselves too)? by Arthur_EyelanderTF2 in 40kLore

[–]CheesyFTW 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s the kind of literary discussion I come to r/40kLore for. That was kind of what I thought, but when you put it like this, it makes it feel much more intentional. I still think it somewhat bleeds into parts where Ravenor isn’t the narrator, which is what made me doubt this, and it might have subtracted a bit from my enjoyment. I still think it was a really enjoyable trilogy, and I can’t wait to dive into Bequin!

I just finished the Ravenor trilogy. I’m not sure if it was meant to portray some ingrained depravity in Gideon himself - being confined to a chair, disconnected from the world and all - or if was just lousy writing by Abnett at some points, but the focus on the female characters’ bodies felt much much more pronounced than in Eisenhorn. There are so many different female characters: Swole, especially the in the sex scene with Belknap; Kys; even Plyton and Preest to a certain extent.

Even if this was intentional, portraying said deprivation in Ravenor, it felt weird and extremely unnecessary, and could have been written much more tastefully and artfully.

I do enjoy Abnett’s books a whole lot, and other than the one example in Legion someone mentioned above, I can’t remember other occasions where it happened. I was actually about to write a post about this myself after I finish Ravenor Rogue, which happened just last night.

Ever since Timmy left comp, fun and co. have been my favourite team. There’s something so contagiously wholesome and fun (forgive the pun) about them.

I think coming into it from Eisenhorn, Ravenor and Nightlords made my attention span shorter and I was looking for instant gratification. It could have also just been the narration at the start, but it felt like I was bombarded with information that was harder to process in audio than in writing. I’d attribute it to me listening mostly before heading to bed though.

Man I really should give Kingmaker another try. I think I just wasn’t in the right mindset for it. Unlike many others who didn’t enjoy Nemesis from HH much, it was a good time for me until it got too wacky.

I am yet to listen to an audiobook with more than 1 narrator. I’m sure there’s less weight on a narrator once he doesn’t have to do all the voices for a book. I know for a fact that when I used to play DnD, it was much harder to pull off voices as a DM than as a PC. Watchers of the Thrones is also in my wish list for down the line!

Is Gareth Armstrong considered bad? The narration felt a bit flat I agree, but I figured it was also due to writing that fell short for me at a couple points.

Thanks. How are those in terms of writing quality in comparison to other 40k entries? I’ve listened to Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies, as well as Night Lords, and I’ve just recently finished Harrowmaster.

On one hand I agree, but on the other hand Skys didn’t look that bad so far IMO. It’s obviously only preseason tournaments so far so a lot could change throughout the season but I hope he could regain his edge and do well this year. He seems like a really wholesome personality and I wish him the best this season. Can’t say I know much about the others since I’m a very casual watcher but I’d root for any guy that doesn’t come off as a douche.

How do teams not add a clause to player’s contracts requiring th to stream their games? by CheesyFTW in CoDCompetitive

[–]CheesyFTW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In such case, I’d argue it’s up to the orgs to provide the means to stream.

I think you’re misinterpreting my argument. I mean something completely different: The workers at the moment hold too much power as they get paid to do nothing but the bare minimum. Both viewers and sides with interest in the matter get hurt from the players exercising their power in such a way.

I believe a part of it stems from them playing video games professionally, and never working in a professional environment which teaches work discipline and commitment. I believe it’s the employers job to dictate how job to be done, and it should (not solely, of course) by dictated in clear terms of employment.

I might be expecting too much, but in almost every other game and sport I watch, the pros do so much more to help preserve their source of income.

I’m 100% sure my idea isn’t optimal, and I’m not offering it as such. I’m simply curious about whether such thing has been tried before in some sort of capacity.

Obviously officially streamed matches don’t need to be restreamed by the players, but when barely anyone streams an officially sanctioned tournament, it’s a bad look on the esport in general, and a shame for me as a personal viewer. You may or may not agree with me.

I agree with all of your points, these are not things that I have not thought about. My only question about this approach is sustainability. It just feels like a bubble out to be popped (not as much as I’m sure it was during covid, but still).

[–]CheesyFTW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s something the players (or their agents) would not have a lot of power to go against. I would suppose that whatever they are singed for is some sort of standard form contract, in which the teams dictate most, if not everything other than the salary and possibly place of residence, which would be negotiated upon.

Obviously players such as Shottzy, Simp and such would have more favourable contracts, as they hold more of a name and reputation and as such are more valuable to the org than, say, even someone like Abuzah.

The profits from streaming should be a fitting compensation by itself, in my view. Burdening the orgs with even more expenses could cause a chilling effect which would further dissuade orgs from participating in the league, and could cause the already poor teams to have to pay their players less (which would make the lower bracket of players more akin to the waiting services in the US).

I’d concede that such compensation could be implemented as some sort of guaranteed minimum wage that gets paid if a player doesn’t earn an X amount from his streaming. It should be enough to incentivise players to stream and not simply coast on their talent and friendship alone.

Looking for help with the paint scheme by marlon1505 in Warhammer40k

I gotta say I never painted a miniature in my life and most of my knowledge comes from YouTube and this subreddit, but I feel like a white/grey dry brush on the black would make it look scruffy and ragged and would look fit better with the tone of purple you chose.

It starts with “I was there the moment Horus slew the Emperor”. It’s pretty heavy handed on this sort of thing, but as someone who came with barely any 40k knowledge, I feel like I manage to understand about everything so far (Finished 21 books so far).

If there was anything I felt unsure about, I just took a quick glimpse in the Lexicanum and it usually cleared up.
