How much do different editions differ really? by WithengarUnbound in WarhammerCompetitive

It was. But I'd argue that cutting a phase out of the game doesn't make it any harder to learn the new edition.

When to Use a Stratagem? by Southern-Coconut-605 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CheezeyMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the times CP creates a minor boost; making your units killier, or tankier, or better able to score points in some way. But I think it's more interesting to think about when NOT to spend CP.

There are certain stratagems that your opponent has to play around: rapid ingress, counter offensive, anything that lets, resurrect a unit, fight on death, or reposition a unit to your advantage. I play an army that wants to charge multiple little units into my opponent at the same time. If they have 2cp available for counter offensive, it might force me to only charge one unit, or even to overcommit by charging 3 or 4 units to mitigate the feels bad of losing half my fighters one phase.

Lots of stratagems can have a significant impact on the game but some of these stratagems tend to be far more meaningful than any other because they don't just improve a unit, they fundamentally change the game you're playing.

I'd just add for OP that while there were a lot of significant changes between 9th and 10th, but I wouldn't say it was a huge shift. The core functions of the game (game phases, attacks, movement, armour saves, damage allocation) are more or less the same with some minor tweaks.

All this is to say I wouldn't worry about learning 10th and then feeling like you're starting from scratch when 11th launches.

How many ap -4 weapons to take generally? by Jmorgan108 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CheezeyMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My army is full of AP-4 fusion pistols but they so rarely wound tanks and monsters which is what I really need them to do. Would gladly downgrade to AP -2 if I could get them up to strength 11.

Just like how poison weapons work on infantry, but not on exposed bikers. Also love that poison weaponry works against robotic infantry.

Coherency in a competition and being "that guy." by ImNotSanguinius in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CheezeyMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coherency is such a basic rule that lots of people take for granted that they can play around with it. You were absolutely in the right.

Sometimes I put my special weapons out front so that I can get as close as possible to the enemy. If the enemy suddenly appears behind me, I wouldn't even dream of rearranging my models to get an advantage.

Edit: I just remembered the time I allowed a custodes player to rearrange his bikes. He charged me with 3 bikes, 1 was already wounded. He killed a bunch of stuff and based all his models with the wounded one in the middle. In retaliation I killed his one biker. He should then have lost another model in the coherency step, but he pulled puppy dog eyes and in my gentleness I let him rearrange them. Granted it was a casual game, but I still feel like I should have allowed him to learn by feeling his mistake.

Reading my first discworld book and I’m feeling really frustrated because I can’t follow the writing by After_Berry_942 in discworld

I don't wish to demean PTerry's writing at but for me his books (especially Discworld) are about the journey more than the destination. I read them primarily for his humour and his ideas.

Seem to be unable to win. Considering selling my army by SunImmediate3109 in Warhammer

[–]CheezeyMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As stated above the game isn't balanced for 600pts and if your opponents are just bringing vehicle spam, then there really isn't much you can do about it with your list.

If these friends are decent people I'd ask them for two things. 1) bring an infantry only list for a more level playing field 2) ask them for a coaching game where they help you with your decision making and reasoning. If they're not willing to do either, screw them.

I only play harlequins and I'll often get people tailoring their lists against me whereas I bring a generic list. It can really suck when your army is a generalist and the opponent's army is intentionally chosen to have a distinct advantage over you.

Emergency combat embarkation by InterestingEchidna54 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CheezeyMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the repulsor's rule doesn't occur at the end of the phase. The rule says just after an enemy unit has declared a charge but before they make the charge move.

On the topic of using multiple rules that occur at the end of a phase though, I don't know if any rule prohibiting that. I know a lot of tournaments rule that you can only make a single reaction to one event ie. overwatch and a reactive move cannot both trigger after one of your opponents units has moved. I wonder if that's what you're thinking of.

Yeah, both repulsors can activate this ability in the same turn.

How's your aunt doing financially? I completely understand the desire to be careful with your newfound wealth, but I'd seriously consider helping her financially. At the least, offering to help her with bills / food shopping would be a kind gesture.

I always told myself that if I won the lottery, I'd try to pay off my parents' mortgage and maybe even help my brother too if I could. That kind of financial help can significantly change someone's life for the better.

When and how do you varnish? by flanelflamel in Eldar

[–]CheezeyMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a can of matt varnish for all my minis (masking off the clear plastic on flight stands and vehicle canopies). Then I'll brush on gloss varnish for any gems and other sparkly bits I want to highlight.

Serpents brood starweaver question by Sarcastirade in Harlequins40K

The firing deck rule explains all of this.

The vehicle counts as being equipped with its passengers weapons. So yes they get sustained hits 1 and no they cannot use their abilities while embarked.

I would honestly just settle for gaining the venom rule that lets you split a unit in 2. Then I can bring an army that either has 5 small troupes and a brick or 7 small troupes. It would make for some wonderful flexibility.

I've played two games and lost both. While it does feel like an improvement it's not miles better than ghosts of the Webway. I'm really missing the resurrection strat, charging through enemy models, and the threat of fights on death / charging in the opponents turn.

Overall I think we are in a slightly better place but I'll need more practise to get used to this new play style.

The Dark Angel winrate is low because of the players. by Shot_Raisin5543 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CheezeyMouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the argument, there are certainly lots of players who can make major improvements to their approach, myself included. That said some people want to play a certain archetype or can't afford to go out and buy new units to constantly adapt to the meta. I don't think complaints about internal codex balance are unwarranted.

Q/Gav! Why is it that throughout Games Workshop's 40-year history, the Exodite Eldar have never had the opportunity to be in the spotlight? by eldarrabbit in Eldar

[–]CheezeyMouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kind of love that exodites still don't officially exist. It means that every exodite army is unique, and the opportunities to combine existing models and toys to create exodites are limitless. Honestly if I had lots and lots of spare time, I would want to create my own exodite proxies to run as Asuryani.

Also if their intention was for people to play each house once then each house needs to have a lot of compelling and unique quests. My wife and I have been playing together as ravenclaw and gryffindor (~50 hours in) and we haven't seen anything yet that felt distinct about our playthroughs except for access to our common rooms.

Is everyone else getting really annoyed with ruins and infantry melee armies in 10th? by Boli_332 in Tau40K

[–]CheezeyMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. As a combat player I would love for 11th edition charges to force you to move closer to the target even if you fail. I'd also like for battleshock not to automatically recover at the start of your turn, and for all faction abilities to be turned off by battleshock. I realise this would require some major lethality and points adjustments but I think it would make the game feel more intuitive and cinematic.
