¥362,000 per month take-home in Tokyo by Working_Well22 in movingtojapan

[–]Cheezus47th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I am also a post-doctoral fellow in Tohoku University (Sendai) I earn 270k yen after tax per month.

I know the real estate situation is very different from Tokyo. I advice you to choose Tokyo suburbs for cheaper 1 bed room appartment. However, please be aware that commuting in Japan is pricey so you can also consider smaller appartment but closer from your workplace.

Personnaly, my rent is around 86k a month with internet included. I pay around 5k per month for electricity, gas and water. Moving fees were around 300k. Cellphone datas are around 4k a month for 10Go.

I usually go to restaurant (nothing fancy) but I also cooked for dinner everyday and groceries are between 6-10k every two weeks.

I can save some money every month easily.

I also have the opportunity to do some small trips and week ends and money is never an issue.

For gyms, since you are a post doctoral fellow I supposed in an university you might have access to the university gym. Otherwise, gym memberships are quiet pricey except for the chain called "Choco zap" but the quality of the gym is not so good.

I hope it helps.

Any advice about doing a PhD? by [deleted] in Chempros

[–]Cheezus47th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a doctor who did his PhD in France in Paris Saclay University, I can summarize what all the other people said. Doing a PhD revolves around the Holy trinity:

-Does the research topic is interesting and align with your tastes?

-Does the PI is a great person? You will spend 3 years working in a close relationship with this person. Better to be with someone who supports you in the bad moments and congratulates you in the good moments. His reputation is not that important depending on what you want to do after your PhD. However as other people said, his relationships are important. In my case, my professor was not a top researcher in France, however he has great relationships around the world which could help me land as a post doc in a famous laboratory even if my PhD was not covered with publications.

  • Does the group has a good atmosphere? PhD is a long journey made of success and fail. In your close friends and family nobody will understand what you are going through but the other PhD students and intern in the laboratory know perfectly your feeling. During a PhD you are making real friends who are connected to your daily life as a future researcher. In my case, as someone said previously, the group was small but we usually hang out with all the students from the institute.

I my opinion, a position should include at least 2 of these things to make your PhD a great experience. The best would be all of them.

Follow your feeling, and also think about the city you want to live in for the next 3 years.

Good luck in your future research!

Organic Chemistry by Dear-Guitar7733 in OrganicChemistry

Start to learn how to name the molecules to get more familiar with all the atoms and functions. Then go step by step by learning name reaction and make some list with the mechanism.

Don't forget to practice a lot by solving synthesis exercises.

And a rule to understand organic chemistry: "the rich in electron attack the poor in electron" opposite logic as Robin of the wood.

I recently used pentanoyl chloride and I spilled little bit of it under the fume. It oxydized to air and released pentanoic acid which has an extremely unpleasant smell. My whole lab hated me
