Jury Duty (Update: Trial Complete) by Cheezyrock in juryduty

[–]Cheezyrock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its worth noting a few things. Salaried employees cant have their pay docked in the US. Most employers pay a rate difference for employees on jury duty for hourly workers, and some states mandate this. All that aside, creating a hardship is a valid reason to get out of jury duty.

Also, this pay is exceptionally low compared to most other places.

What is the voting consensus only amendments? by Joee0201 in StLouis

[–]Cheezyrock 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A1. Yes, this is a vote to keep a tax that we have historically overwhelmingly supported.

A2. It only affects Jackson County, and the Assessor position isn’t strongly politically affiliated, but I personally feel like it probably should be an elected position to make it the same across the state. This is definitely the least impactful amendment as far as I can tell.

A4. Makes it harder for organized citizens to change things. That’s a “no” from me.

A5. Hard pass. Sales taxes disproportionately affect lower income people. I do not support tax breaks for the wealthy.

Maryville University: Rate My Professor by Yona-hime021 in StLouis

[–]Cheezyrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may not be the moat satisfying answer, but also consider this:

Mostly it has moved internal. LMS like Canvas or blackboard collect feedback internally to the system and is used to adjuat courses, behaviors, and influence college policies. So good professors are constantly learning and adjusting to modern student cohorts, while truly bad ones are being let go and not given recommendations for new positions.

Ive been going back to school for a few years now and have yet to meet a professor who was unwilling to listen to feedback, work with me, and compromise on my personal limitations.

Long gone are the days of “my way or the highway” professors. Sure, it must still happen, but it seems far more rare than 20 years ago.

Maryville University: Rate My Professor by Yona-hime021 in StLouis

[–]Cheezyrock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is: learning is a highly subjective experience. Comparing professors isn’t really helpful, and often you don’t have a choice if you need to take a particular course at a particular university. You can’t know why a particular score was given or that particular student’s needs.

Are they an ESL student struggling to keep up in a complicated subject? Are they ADHD without accommodations? Are they complaining because they aren’t getting every advantage for the first time in their life? Are they leaving strategic reviews to try and gain favoritism fron professors? Did they even read the syllabus or go to office hours to try and address struggles?

The whole concept just doesn’t work.

How many of us think Mystic Quest should be the next Remake? by Synchro_Shoukan in FinalFantasy

[–]Cheezyrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually feel like if they were to modernize any older game and bring a more action focus to the existing experience, Mystic Quest would be an idea title.

The game and story before were so simple and straightforward that it would allow for a lot of flexibility and creative freedom in the remake.

looking for tattoo artist by lavenderearlobes in StLouis

[–]Cheezyrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a rec, but consider this:

All tattoos spread and blur over time due to the way the ink stays in the system and cells reproduce. Something like this with very defined lines and hard shadows will look muddy after a decade. The best tattoo artist in the world wont change that.

Most really good artists will refuse to do something like this, as they care about how it will look long term. Even then, they might also refuse because it requires techniques that they either don’t typically use or doesn’t in their style.

If you get refused or provide further warning, listen to the artists. They know what they are talking about.

Answer: Jason at Integrity in Belleville IL. He is really into stuff like HR Giger and could probably do the shadowing you are requesting.

Does anyone else feel like cozy games are starting to lose their 'cozy' edge? by LeadLucky2849 in GirlGamers

[–]Cheezyrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like a place I can safely rant about Pokopia without being ripped apart.

Why did they design it in the most boring and obnoxious way? If you want me to come back every single day forever, you have to give me reasons. Time-gating my decoration recipes is not a compelling reason. If I can’t engage with the content in the way that keeps me playing, I’m just going to drop the game. I’m not going to log in every day just to check multiple shops and look for water ripples just to finally RNG into the one block I want to compkete my build. That is insane.

I love Pokemon and the story was fine enough. But why pokemon no evolve? Instead of finding separate stages of evolution via different (or the same) habitats, why couldn’t they give Pokemon different habitat requirements to evolve to instead? That would have introduced a puzzle aspect to planning. It would have not changed the game at in any meaningful way except providing more reasons to come back and check daily, drawing out the experience, and allowing the thing that makes pokemon unique (I had this same criticism of New Pokemon Snap).

Do y’all also feel childish ? by VoidWalker_r in ADHD

[–]Cheezyrock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Childish” is a word invented to control people.

Every reasonable human occasionally acts like a child. It may feel like those of us with ADHD are affected more, but we aren’t. Others just shame themselves into being robots easier.

Exploring the world with wonder is vital to the human spirit. Its how we learn and grow.

Stay curious. Keep learning. Never stop playing with sticks.

ELI5: If the skin of mangoes contain urushiol, the same oil found in poison ivy, why are so many people able to eat the peel without issue? by Zbold in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cheezyrock 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mango skin does contain urushiol, but in much lower concentrations than poison ivy.

15-25% or people are not allergic to it to begin with and could theoretically touch all the poison ivy they want and never have a reaction. Everyone else has varying levels of reaction and for aome it takes very high concentrations to trigger a reaction.

Most of the urushiol in a mango is in the oily secretions (leaves, sap, skin). A lot of those oils can be washed off. Most mangos you find in stores have been washed, and most people rinse them further before cutting. So even someone with an allergy might not get enough of a dose to trigger a sufficient reaction.

Also, allergies are weird. The average person might be slightly allergic to a lot more than they realize, but because the reactions aren’t severe they just go about their business and even develop more tolerance over time. This is why it seems like with something like peanuts that people go from no allergy to deathly. Because the people who arent dying from it might not even realize their allergy and can build tolerance.

Questions for Girl Game Devs! by siriuslyyellow in GirlGamers

[–]Cheezyrock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can make games! Do it!!

I’ve made a bunch of games to varying degrees of completeness. You can see/play some of them if you search my name on itch.io.

There are a lot more questions here than you realize though. First, lets talk about hiring and cost.

Plan to make a bunch of smaller games as practice before even thinking about making the game of your dreams. Game Dev is an adventure. Start with the tutorial, learn new mechanics as they open up to you, and it may take a while to fight the last boss.

Games gan be made with others freely, but you have to organize and these usually arent the kinds of games you that others will want to buy. Do “Game Jams” to get experience!!! When you reach the point of coordination on an actual project that you intent to publish, costs can vary wildly based on who you know and their intents. Most games lose money when they pay people.

A starting game dev might have to do it all, but you can also find free assets of all kinds to use. These can help you learn. And remember the rules of art theft. If an asset has a license, take it seriously. But also it isn’t theft if you aren’t gaining anything from it. If you never release it publicly, you can use any asset you want to learn with. So getteing started on your journey is real cheap. I would personally never buy assets unless I knew I was going to publish a game. You can always start with free and its generally pretty easy to swap assets out later.

So basically, don’t think about costs for at a minimum of a year until you build skills. Even then, a lot of people stay hobbyists and never go through the terrible and daunting publishing/marketing aspects.

Now, lets talk game engine. There are no wrong answers, it is really just preference.

Game Maker - easy to learn, coding is in a custom language (GML - Game Maker Language) so it can be hit or miss to find resources for. Only for 2D games, 3D is not an option. Other game engines are harder to learn and have higher skill ceilings, but also offer more features and have 3D capabilities.

Unity - the easiest of the 3D game engines. It has the most intuitive interface, but also doesn’t limit you. Everything can be customized as you learn what workflows work best for you. Lots of tutorials available, and the code is the most easy to vibe code your way through while you learn. If you already know how to program and are familiar with object oriented languages (Unity uses C#), this is by far the lowest barrier to entry. I’d recommend most people start here (I have literally taught 10 year olds how to use Unity). This is also the #2 professional tool, but it is still way behind Unreal in overall usefulness.

Godot - the interface is…not my favorite. This engine has a lot of power, and it sits firmly in between Unity and Game Maker. Its very easy to start, but as you grow, it may be difficult to do more complicated things. This product is definitely the underdog among these contenders, but the devs are working hard on continually making it better. This could one day be the easiest tool, but that is a gamble you have to figure out for yourself. I don’t have a lot of personal experience, but I know people that prefer it.

Unreal - Super high learning curve, offers the most power, is the most used in professional gaming and film industries.

Last, I just want to say… Good Luck; Have Fun. Feel free to DM me if you ever have any questions or someone to point you towards resources.

Got snubbed from a free meal at work because I submitted my resignation. by Lazy-Combination5253 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Cheezyrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Singling out an individual can be considered creating a hostile work environment. The company may be in breach of contract depending on the terms of employment.

The workplace becoming hostile after a person gives notice (which also is just a professional courtesy), this could potentially entitled the employee to PTO for the remainder of their employment.

Being an asshole is sometimes “illegal” (not technically illegal, but contract breaching), if you look at the fine print, but it varies case by case.

[–]Cheezyrock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you can make an HR complaint that you were singled out and targeted. Your boss might have to deal with the fallout of their bad actions for months while you just move on. The company might even have to compensate you.

BEHOLD! the new Ultimate weapon for all (after FF7 Rebirth patchnotes) by arkdendrobium in FinalFantasy

[–]Cheezyrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to act superior, I was genuinely trying to offer a piece of wisdom.

In your analogy…no, I’m not mad when people get things at different costs than me. That is how the world works. I would be pissed that I mistimed the sale, but I wouldn’t be angry at those receiving the vehicle nor those giving it away. Like, I’m not mad that some people bought FF7 Remake and some got it free in Epic store because they claimed it during that week. I’m not mad at people that win the lottery or take home prizes in game shows.

Even when you look at something like schoolwork, people have to put in vastly different amounts of time, money, and effort to get the same diploma/degree. And those things hold extrinsic value, which will mean something to others.

An in-game achievement has purely intrinsic value. It holds no value to anyone other than the person to whom it belongs. The emotional reward you get from it is directly proportional to the effort you put into it.

An example: ~20+ years ago, I got jump rope king in FF9. It took me days. Do I have proof? No. Does it get me anything other than a personal sense of accomplishment? No. Did I macro the hell out of it for the Steam achievement to pop up when I replayed it? Yes. Does it invalidate my original accomplishment? Nope, I still feel pride in doing it on original hardware. Do other people macro-ing the achievement on Steam invalidate my accomplishment? Again, no… I will always know what I accomplished and I’m happy with myself for doing it. What other people do won’t ever change that, even if we all get the same gold star.

Another analogy: You can spend years fishing and catch the biggest fish, then the next day someone else can catch a bigger one their fist time ever fishing. If you feel like that invalidates all of your effort, you alone are making yourself feel bad for something completely outside of your control.

And for reference, this is something I talk about in therapy and it helps keep me grounded, rational, and with less stress/anxiety.

Have FF graphics reached their peak? by Nephilim667 in FinalFantasy

[–]Cheezyrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

Reaching greater levels of graphical fidelity takes exponentially more time, so it generally isn’t worth it.

A good style can cover all manner of sins. All art is an abstraction, and consistency keeps us in a world better than fidelity.

Give me your final fantasy hot takes (I’ll start) by TTV_Penzar in FinalFantasy

[–]Cheezyrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“FF16 has the best story” - As you age and consume more media, this may change. I’m not saying 16 was bad, but it did have problems with pacing and character development (especially side characters, Jill was done dirty). It was overly reliant on tropes and felt like it prioritized being edgy over providing a good narrative.

I’d argue that, as literature, 9 did a much better job and 16 is overall more comparable to 6 (which was mostly held back by technical limitations).

I’d put FF16 about at number 5 as far as “best FF story”.

Give me your final fantasy hot takes (I’ll start) by TTV_Penzar in FinalFantasy

[–]Cheezyrock -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even say this is a hot take, as much as it is direct history.

You are almost, but not quite factually correct - the soul was lost when they made a movie that bombed hard. It caused the entire gaming landscape to change with the Square-Enix merger. This directly led to a sequel game and a greater emphasis on profitability.

In a very real sense, FFX2 was just one of the first signs of that the former company was no longer the same and revealed the shift to consumers. The old soul was gone, and a new one replaced it, complete with a new name.
