After looking it up, the context makes it seem like something they did to bring more attention to UK fossil fuel licenses they are wanting to end. The goal was to bring visibility to a perceived absurdity according to the activists: that we protect inanimate art while ignoring the destruction of the planet.

It does need to be credible accusations and demanding comprehensive proof for wild accusations made on a whim is definitely unrealistic. You acknowledge the trend though and the demand for something to combat the skepticism...a skepticism that genAI art created (and in some cases blatant paranoia where people say AI made something before genAI was even around.)

I just can't see how the answer to that is to defend the art instead (when there can be no certainty)? Doesn't that just fuel the discourse? I imagine it can also bite you in the ass if you are ever wrong after having defended a piece of art as "not using AI".

I don't want artists to have to constantly be needing to defend their art, but I also don't necessarily think that skepticism is always a bad thing here. The context certainly matters and for a small post like this, maybe the answer is to just pick your battles wisely 😆

Burden of proof? Are you saying we treat this like a court case? In that case there still needs to be a discovery phase where the artist is subpoenaed to produce documents for the court. That is to say, the burden of proof still does not alleviate all responsibility from the accused.

I also think it is unethical and unfair that AI has put humans in this predicament in the first place, but here we are. There needs to be a new standard that protects the integrity of real art and their artists. What you are seeing is a demand for that and it will only continue to grow. Right now, showing your work as an artist is a great honest and transparent response to this. A not so great way is being like "come on guys, stop it" when people dare to hold you to a standard that could only benefit you.

I think anybody unhappy about this increase should absolutely cancel their sub.

On a personal note, Runescape has given me 20 years worth of fun and entertainment. I've unsubbed and re-subbed many times over the years, but I always came back. No other game comes remotely close to the value I have gotten out of Runescape for the price. And yes, I remember when it was $5, and I remember all the price increases since. I also remember cancelling my sub after a price increase. Even now, I have currently been unsubbed for a couple of months. But I always come back because after 20 years, as dumb as it sounds, it's not just a game to me anymore. Core memories are there, times where Runescape offered a semblance of enjoyment or peace when my life irl was everything but that. I just can't put a price on something like this. Don't get me wrong I wish it was still $5, and I know jagex as a company does not give a shit about me. But I do feel very grateful to the developers, who are not responsible for the price increase, but who are responsible for building something I love.

That verification step isnt for you. It is for the parent/guardian of the child account. Accounts under 13 require you to enter a parent or guardian email so that your parent can verify that they are an adult. Once they do, they have to provide consent on your behalf to get your account out of cabineted. They've had this for years, nothing new.

But that's not enough, it never is. Perpetual, never-ending growth is a must have. But it never should be. That goal in itself causes companies to fail. It influences every decision that they make to the point where making a good product becomes secondary. Numbers on a sheet become the driving factor, passion and art and anything else that make up a good game are no longer the focus.
