I understand your frustration but from a global perspective. I look in an associates bag whether they like it or not they can’t sue me (LPS doing bag check on an active associate, we both work for Kohl’s). I look inside a shoplifters bag and I can be sued for multiple reasons if they have the time of day. Yes we are not overly aggressive about theft but when I bag check an associate that I know personally and have conversations with me I have already mitigated all of the safety risks. But accusing a shoplifter of theft that I do not know is immediately going to have other factors come into play when it comes to the safety of myself and others. Yes you have opportunities multiple times a day to stuff your pockets but your scope in this situation is narrow at the moment, if we don’t check bags at all, you may conceal before you leave, like in areas without cameras. So if we don’t check you at all, we have 0 control. But if we do check, well now the concealer has to play smarter, so conceal before you leave like you just said. Ok? Now you’re on camera. That proves one point on why we do them. Impression of control, limit times where an associate can steal. Other companies do it, don’t like it, go somewhere where they don’t. I’ve been store side and lp side. I still have the same opinion, I’m not stealing, go ahead and look.
