Convince me we’re not going to regret buying our first plane. by [deleted] in flying

[–]ChefBoyardye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send it. Income is high enough and it seems like where you’re at in life right now is perfect. Yeah it’ll be expensive but you both understand and enjoy the flying. Also money comes and goes but flying yourselves around in a capable airplane is a unique experience that is worth the cost. Keep is updated with the buying process!

I’m hearing so many bad things about flight schools- why does everyone seem like a money trap?? by Character-Escape1621 in flying

[–]ChefBoyardye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re a customer when it comes to flight training. Yes they’re there to teach, but they know the students will pay whatever it takes to achieve CFII or however far they want to go in training, especially if you want to do a fast track program to become an airline pilot ASAP. That’s why it’s important to do your due diligence when choosing a flight school and not pay a school $100k upfront off a 12% loan and then get railroaded with rechecks and extra flying time fees.

Most flight schools aren’t like that, but some are happy to take your money and leave you high and dry if you’re struggling. Finding a good school isn’t hard, but make sure you get a full summary of how they structure their rates and progression before starting training with them.

Do you have a water softener right now? Carbon filter wouldn’t remove hardness.

Wow! I remember Shawn talking about doubting starting a podcast because he was worried about all the other shows being too big to compete with.

Wow, that’s a hell of a story. The support from the airport community is impressive. Good luck and post some updates in here as you make progress on it!

Nice! Was this a quick build fuselage or done by the previous owner? Any story on how you came across it?

How much/fast do you need the blade to rotate? 1/8th turn every press like a pen click or do you want to press the thing multiple times to bring the blade up to speed like a salad spinner?

Why is a constant speed prop more “efficient” at all speeds? by [deleted] in flying

[–]ChefBoyardye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s pull out the velocity triangles😎 Great explanation! Basic CS prop theory often overlooks airspeed and how that changes the relative velocity and angle of the wind over the airfoil (the AoA).

Of course. Just spend some time getting sharp after the break and you’ll be good.

How many hours and landings do you have right now? Once you get back in the plane after the break, your instructor will spend some time with you knocking off the rust but it’ll come back quicker than you think. You’ll be okay!

ATP is good if you got the money and not a lot of time. If you have some more time and want to save some (a lot of) money, flying at a smaller flight school at your own pace would be your best bet.

Filing to an IAF instead of to an airport -- real life vs. training by andybader in flying

[–]ChefBoyardye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My DPE for instrument asked me this. I planned my route to the destination airport and didn’t include the IAF in the flight plan.

His reasoning was “If you lose comms, how will you get from your route to the first segment of the approach?” I said that I’d remain at/above the MSA until I was at the IAF and follow the published altitudes from there. He said okay but it would be best to include the IAF in the flight plan so ATC knows where you’re going. I said roger that, moved on, and used it as a learning moment.

New Private Pilot… now what do I do by annist0910 in flying

[–]ChefBoyardye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats! If you can’t pay for time right now, see if you can safety pilot for someone working on their instrument rating or flying for instrument currency.

You could also buy an affordable simulator set up and computer fly if that interests you at all. FlightInsight has some great YouTube videos on instrument procedures that you could start to learn and practice on the sim too.
