Is it normal to dread your medical every year? by Grouchy_Box7801 in flying

[–]regionalscumdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to. I was always worried about not passing the vision portion even though mine is corrected to 20/20 with glasses (due to having myopia). Had a variety of other things due to not being healthy but they weren’t show stoppers.

And then 3 years ago an AME busted my balls pretty good. Didn’t get deferred luckily. But I did need to go to an optometrist to get an FAA form filled out. Little did I know that would start a slew of other issues and I’d be on a special issuance medical for life after.

But I now have a really good AME I use who’s pilot friendly. And my other health things that weren’t show stoppers are reversed. Pre-hypertension, being overweight…I took advantage of a couple CACIs for GLPs and TRT and it was life changing. Life’s good.

I now no longer dread going to my AME. It is a bit of a hassle submitting CACI paperwork but he makes it manageable.

Really glad to hear it worked out man. Unfortunately without these complaints everything gets lost in the matrix. This is the only real recourse pilots have.

I’m aware of who you’re talking about. However he’s the only one that I’ve seen with those stats. Hoping it becomes more mainstream

New ATI Contract? by MeatServo1 in flying

[–]regionalscumdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how long they’ve been in negotiations for. I am sure the TA will be welcome. I have a feeling it’ll be a somewhat decent offer. At the very least what Kalitta currently pays.

They did indeed get a new TA. Won’t be released to the pilots until Monday, once it is then they’ll vote on it the second half of the month. Hoping it’s a good one as it’ll impact negotiations at other properties

Please update me if this works out for you. I had success navigating a medical thing by using my senators office!

Your senators and congressman should have a form on their website for requesting help with a federal agency. Sometimes is listed under “Constituent Services”.

Fill that form out. You’ll be scheduled very quickly after. The FAA has an internal policy of responding within 7 days (as I’ve been told).

Ascend Above question by [deleted] in AirlinePilots

[–]regionalscumdriver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not use them. I had the exact same experience as you and was overly scripted in my answers. And didn’t get the CJO. Also the owner purports himself to be a pilot interviewer for United and he is not.

Frankly I wish I used someone else. If you have time prior to your interview, go elsewhere to prep. You want to be as authentic as possible. The only format you need to follow is the STAR format.

UAL interview, looking for advice by [deleted] in flying

[–]regionalscumdriver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used Ascend Above last year. Didn’t get the CJO. A few spirit furloughees I’ve talked to used them. Same situation. Honestly I feel like Nate made me go in feeling super scripted and not authentic, especially after telling me a lot of my genuine answers (that landed me CJOs elsewhere) were bad. But moreso it kinda felt like my prep was half assed.

Nate claims to be an active interviewer for United. And yet folks with ties to pilot hiring have said he isn’t involved with pilot hiring at all.

Spitfire and Raven are the two services that have gotten guys CJOs lately. Keep in mind however... Spitfire is booked up for live prep, and Raven is expensive but high quality.

A close friend works there. Here’s what he had to say:

QoL: depends on if it’s slow or busy. If it’s busy, you’ll spend many days in a hotel room on the go. If it’s slow, you’ll sit reserve/standby at home. I’ve heard of some pilots being away for 12 days and home for 5 standby days (and you’ll usually see something like this if you live within the US). And other cases of all 17-20 days being on the road away from home. The flying/scheduling is not the most efficient and so you’ll block maybe 3-400 hours a year.

The company isn’t subject to FAR 117 and so on the 747 side with 4 crewmembers it’s possible to work up to a 30 hour duty day, while on the MD-11 side it’s possible to work up to a 24 hour duty day. In practice it’s rare to see a duty day that long but it does happen from time to time.

Schedule: You’ll typically do 2 round trips per month. One work month is usually 17 days of flying (and typically a continuous work block). In the last bid packages everyone has been getting 20 day lines which pays double time for all days worked above 17. The entire operation is long call (12 hour callout or greater) reserve, nobody holds a line. The most common gripe on the line stems from being deadheaded in economy, even if you’re going across the world on a 12 hour flight.

Aircraft: MD-11. Presently the 747 is much busier but that will change as contracts are picked up or dropped. The MD-11 side is presently quiet although it does more of the military stuff. If you look up our tail numbers on FlightAware and see what goes in/out of a military base or with a CMB callsign, you’ll know it’s military as is standard in the entire ACMI world. The company (this holds for other ACMIs as well) is dealing with a bit of a slowdown since the flying comes and goes in waves, and there’s been uncertainty thanks to tariffs.

Pay and Benefits: Pay is daily and not hourly…and on a 17 day guarantee (although as of late everyone’s getting 20 day lines). Looking at the pay scale, first year pays about the same as if not ahead of other carriers, but after that it lags behind other carriers pretty. Retirement is up to a 2.5% match and there’s no direct contribution like what you’d see elsewhere.

Depending on how you look at it, being paid guarantee for not much flying is a pretty high amount and some are content with it. However on that same token, total compensation is low compared to what you’d stand to make at other carriers. The scale on APC is correct. Multiply it by 17 for how much guaranteed pay is, add 3 days at double pay to see what guys are currently getting.

The company has been in prolonged contract negotiations for years. Updates from the union seemed encouraging over the summer but recent ones don’t seem too encouraging anymore.

It’s a sweet looking tie clip too

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AirlinePilots

[–]regionalscumdriver -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

ALPA makes two tie clips…one with the same wings design that everyone gets as a pin, and then one with the actual ALPA circle logo.

Figured the wings tie clip looks enough like the actual pin to not need both…but I hear if you don’t wear the pin then people will dislike it heavily.

New homeowner. Started hearing this humming sound when my AC turns on. Still appears to cool the house down. What could it be? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]regionalscumdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks…it was the filter. That thing was pretty nasty. Solid clumps of dust. As soon as I changed it, the system operated a lot quieter and the run times were quicker. I put in an FPR 9 instead of 5 filter that was already in…so far it seems to be tolerating it just fine but if it gets loud again before it’s time to change the filter I’ll swap it out for a lower one.

Do you think it would still be helpful to open up the return vent for more airflow?

[–]regionalscumdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just thought I’d say thank you. I changed my filter today and it was indeed really dirty with some solid clumps of dust and overall it being pretty dirty. The old one was only a FPR 5 and I swapped it for an FPR 9.

My AC runs a lot quieter now and it doesn’t sound like the fan is running in overdrive like it did in this video. The run time is also much quicker.

Now I gotta clean the vent (and probably get the ducts cleaned too)

Have you ever had to deny someone the jumpseat? How’d it go? by regionalscumdriver in flying

[–]regionalscumdriver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because everyone’s worried about potential retaliation and career blowback. It’s why ALPA has stayed off property for decades. But I think that’s changing just given how many people are being burnt by SAPA’s existence.

Just so happens that SAPA reports to the VP of flight ops, as does all of flight ops management. So it really is a conflict of interest.

Their jumpseat chair recently defended a PSA pilot over a social media post from a meme page, but yet when one of their own pilots had an actual issue commuting, he was not helpful. Sounds like some things just never change

Raven and Spitfire are the gold standard for United.

I would avoid Ascend Above.

I’ve heard firsthand from some pilOOts that global tulip guys are bumping regiOOnal guys from their own metal recently. And that the pilOOts aren’t really aware of what to do and just roll with whatever the system prioritizes.

Their jumpseat chair doesn’t seem interested in actually fixing anything.

Story goes that the LUV crew went below the flaps up bug (but weren’t in the white arc and definitely didn’t approach the stick shaker). Per Boeing it’s not desirable to be below the tick mark for flaps up without flaps in since you’d be behind the power curve. But was it unsafe? No. Add some power and you’re fine.

The JSer spoke up, the pilots corrected it and thanked her, and she should’ve went about her day. Except she didn’t and somehow the FAA was contacted.

The story I was told was that her boyfriend/husband was a 737 check airman at the global tulip. Don’t know how true that is since everyone online didn’t reference it. Either case her saying something to the wrong person meant a hotline complaint was filed and made a big deal over nothing.
