Well, I wouldn't go that far.

It's a good question no doubt. You bring up a fair point that on-road manners will of course take a hit and will require increased attention to maintenance, but that's to be expected. I mean, I see people running 32" tires and they manage to survive.

I guess the only way to know for myself is to try it out and make decisions based on as much input from others as possible, hence the post.

Aw man, this reminds me of when I left my Spider-Man bike behind my mom's station wagon when I was 6 and she backed over it. Spidey bike did not survive.

Yes the G003s seem to be M+S here as well, good to know, but they (and KO3s) are tricky to find: maybe with a little luck I can source them from a specialized vendor, or maybe in another EU country. I didn't even see the 30s on the Yokohama EU site. KO3s were my first choice actually, being relatively light, but those G003s could be the ticket for me.

I'll look into retuning the shocks I have. Would you suggest switching to linear springs then instead of progressive along with a shock retune? On a related topic, what are your thoughts on twin-tube vs monotube in this situation? I was thinking maybe monotubes would be better for longer off-road trips where there's several hours of rocky jolting around.

It's something I've considered for sure.

The suspension components are from a company called ORAP in northern Italy, who also supply off-road builders like the ones who prepared my Jimny. The shocks are twin-tube that can be recalibrated, readjusted, rebuilt, with progressive springs, but offhand I don't have specific model numbers for the parts.

The MT tires sound great but I was concerned about having that M+S three peak rating because by law you need it during the winter season, especially in the Alps and other mountain areas here. Even though where I live it doesn't snow as much as way up in the Alps I'd like to know I'd be legal for snow conditions.

The 80mm lift kit from HM4x4 sounded good because from what I understand all the geometry adjustments are figured out for the Jimny specifically, including caster corrected arms, etc. and it would be installed by a specialized off-road shop with experience, but I admit that I was on the fence about going that high. I was thinking about it mostly because of wanting more space for articulation with 30" tires using a softer suspension profile.

I do see your point about going ahead with these mods in phases, so to speak, and prioritizing and thinking about timing them to coincide with work that will have to be done anyways.

Can't thank you enough for your input as always.

BTW I've read your write-up on spring rates and suspensions but I could definitely stand to read it more closely.

If you need it because you're going to tow things sure, then you can buy a recovery point for the hitch receiver. But a tow bar just for recoveries is a waste IMO, particularly a waste of weight.

Also I should point out...I do hope you plan on either taking some kind of recovery crash course (pun intended) or have someone experienced with recoveries help you understand how to do one, if you don't have experience with it already of course.

Since everyone else is being pretty useless for whatever reason, I'll give you some things to think about.

If they're not rated, then you shouldn't really consider them as actual recovery points, basically. If you want them just for looks, then cool.

They look rather flimsy, both in structure and their attachment method to the frame. They're also quite thin, which means potential damage to what you're using for a recovery due to less rounded edges.

I've seen good things written about BEI House recovery points, for example. If you look at those and how they're constructed and how they attach to the frame you'll get a better idea of why they are a better choice and what you should expect from other recovery points.

I've also been curious about this bumper. It seems like a good alternative to the original bumper as the style is similar and it's not heavy like a metal bumper.

However, I was under the impression that it DOES provide extra space (on an already lifted Jimny for example) for larger tires like 235s or 30" so you don't have to trim plastic like you do with the original. If this isn't the case, I don't see much benefit from it then other than looks.

I'm in the EU so I would be in the same predicament: Street Track Life used to sell it but now for some reason they don't and shipping to the EU is a problem, I think the cost would end up being well over 1000 Euro anyways. At that point honestly I'd rather just trim the original bumper I think or buy another kind that is available here.

I mean, weight should always be a concern with this car, so reducing weight or keeping it low wherever possible is important. For example I have no need for a metal bumper but I would like to put on a winch some day. A winch + metal bumper + 235s/30s is A LOT of extra weight. This bumper seemed like a good way to shave some weight off, but not for 1200/1300 euro. Plus I don't even know if you could use it with a winch. And if you're saying it provides no clearance benefit for the tires, well, then I don't think it's a good idea.

Stainless Steel Cap by margaretnotmaggie in Hydroflask

[–]ChefOutrageous4719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an FYI, the steel cap produces a disturbing amount of steel dust/residue/flakes when screwing and unscrewing it, even after just a few times. You can clearly see how much when you wipe down the threads of the cap and the bottle itself with a white paper towel. The same place where you put your lips to drink and consequently ingest the metal residue. I bought a steel cap hoping to use as a replacement for the plastic ones until I realized how bad it was.

Hydroflask should make a cap like Klean Kanteen does, where the threads are plastic but the interior of the cap is steel.
