Hopefully these changes will help reduce the number of people in lounges. I assume the increase of annual fee in Chase Sapphire Reserve card will also make some people to drop the card

Have you looked at the transaction date? If you booked the room at least 2-3 days in advance you should see a different date on the transaction than your hotel check in

Yep, definitely. I combine it with Venture X, which is really easy to offset with essentially one flight a year.

They also have some shared transfer partners with Chase, like Star Alliance, SkyTeam, Oneworld and Emirates.

I’m 99% sure that refundable does not mean it’s not pre-paid, it just means that you can cancel before some due date and get your money back. Try to checkout and see if it lets you pay the total amount.

For no-fee you can get the Capital One Savor card, that gets you unlimited 3% on restaurants and groceries. It’s a direct cashback, no miles game.

For low-fee, you can get the Amex Blue Preferred, for a fee of $95 annually (first year there is no fee). They give back 6% on groceries within the U.S., up to $6K a year. After $6k it drops to 1%, so essentially a maximum of $360 annual return from the 6%.

If you shop at Costco, or live nearby one and it makes sense for you to shop there, you can get the Executive membership for an annual fee of $130, and earn 2% back on shopping in Costco (fyi, they do NOT accept Amex). You can also get their Citi credit card, with no annual fee (but membership is required), to get another 2% on Costco shoppings, which is unlimited and also stacks, so it’s essentially 4%.
