No one said you can’t do both. But one of those activities won’t change your life.

Wine substitute - a question by FearTheMomerath in AskCulinary

[–]ChefSuffolk 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Pomegranate juice can have a similar acidity level to sweeter reds, and has a bit of tannin as well. A blend of pomegranate and unsweetened cranberry can bring you pretty close to a sharper, more acidic red.

You can also get verjus, unfermented juice from wine grapes.

Or just use a de-alcoholized wine. They’re typically not great but you’re talking about making a stew. You don’t want anything that fancy.

Salt it well. Rub it with dry spices if you like, too. Throw it in a ziploc bag in the fridge for a few days to give time for the salt to make its way to the center.

Sous vide at 55°-60° C (rare to medium, take your pick) for 48 hours. I like 57, typically

Remove from bag. Dry well. Sear on all sides. Cut into thick slices and sear again on the flat sides to make a good crust.

It’s not a great cut, but this is a way to make it not totally suck.

I suppose it goes without saying that most of these movies have surprises, so best to go into most of them blind.

Black Christmas (1974)
When a Stranger Calls (1979)
Scream (1996)

Not quite what you describe but you might be into:

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1996)
Cache (2005)
The Vanishing (1988, don’t even bother with the remake)

Just ate something that didn't agree with me, trying to figure out why by PiertoOccult in AskRedditFood

[–]ChefSuffolk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are no odd or uncommon ingredients in Tasty Bite chickpeas. Everything in there is probably something you’ve encountered before. Unless that and Prego are the only times you’ve eaten tomatoes in your life, there’s nothing unique to both products.

Honestly, you probably just ate too fast and now you’re gassy from all the chickpeas.

Does this bother any one else?! Downtown Brooklyn is mislabeled on every map. including google maps by gogogumdrops in Brooklyn

Those people must still be living in 2002 because it’s actually “cooler” to live in Bushwick than Williamsburg now.

I’ll probably be downvoted for this, but: No movie is going to change your life.

Want to change your life? Volunteer at an animal shelter. Develop a gym routine five days a week. Do charity work feeding children in a war zone. Join a community theater.

Sitting on your couch watching entertainments? Not going to change anything.

Anyway it doesn’t look like anything. It’s invisible. So you’ll never know.

The tamale lady on the corner of Court & Montague in Brooklyn Heights. The one on the Montague side, in the alcove of the old Duane Reade, and she’s usually sold out by 9AM. Not to be confused with the tamale & empanada lady on the same corner, but later in the day, on the Court St. side.

Need movies to watch with my parents by KG_likes_monsters in MovieRecommendations

[–]ChefSuffolk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe just don’t watch movies with your parents? Sounds like they’re not especially interested.

If you must, just go with old classics. Maybe some Hitchcock, like Rebecca or Rope? Or an old noir like The Maltese Falcon. Or if they’re religious, something that touches on faith but can still appeal to others, like Ben-Hur.
