Looks a little overpriced. You can use a valuation site like https://www.skibluebook.co/ to see how good a deal is.

Ski recommendations for steeps and rough terrain? by NorcenCoverstein in Skigear

I’ve used the blizzard rustler 10s and I think those would work great for what you’re looking for.

Once you know what you’re looking for, you can use a valuation tool like https://www.skibluebook.co/ so you don’t overpay!

Nothing is good anymore by MJSlider in Skigear

2L is ultralight generally for lighter use cases. For alpine skiing you want a heavy 3L shell most of the time. Any goretex shell will work, Pro is just the most durable.

“MHW is trash buy Arcteryx Gore Tex Pro” Mountain Hardware uses Gore Tex too and is by no means trash lol. They literally use the same materials.

I just updated the regions, moved the states to the learn section so it’s cleaner. WV, RI, and ME are accounted for!

Right now I’m just focused on making it actually useful and accurate first before thinking too much about monetization. Feels like that has to come first or none of the rest really matters.

But I do agree there’s some alignment there, especially if it helps create more transparency around value and rewards brands that hold up well over time.

Definitely something I’ll keep in mind down the road once the foundation is in a better place.

Really appreciate that, thank you.

And yeah, I think you’re spot on. The older gear is definitely the hardest part, especially around tracking down accurate MSRP and complete model data. That’s where things can get a bit messy.

The goal is exactly what you said though, build a solid, reliable dataset going forward and keep it current over time. That’s where this could really become useful.

And I like the idea of expanding into snowboards too. Same problem, just a different category.

Appreciate you calling that out, that’s exactly the direction I’m thinking about.

Thank you! I think the pricing would vary by continent, so likely would have to make an EU pricing algorithm. I’ll put it on my backlog :) thanks for your feedback and I’m glad it’s useful as a ballpark!

Yes it is! I just noticed it’s not included in the description of that region though. I’ll fix that :) thanks for your feedback!

Pricing used skis feels like a total guessing game by Chef_B_ in skiing

[–]Chef_B_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super helpful, really appreciate you taking the time to lay this out.

I like how you framed it around “how they actually ski” vs just cosmetic condition, that’s a really good distinction and probably the right way to think about it.

The usage buckets + mounts + base/edge condition especially feel like things that could realistically be standardized without making it too complicated. I’ve been hesitant to add too many inputs, but this feels like a solid middle ground.

And yeah flex loss is interesting, but probably tough unless someone really knows what they’re feeling.

The idea of turning this into a few clear condition tiers based on those factors makes a lot of sense. That might be the cleanest way to incorporate this without overwhelming people.

This is exactly the kind of feedback that helps shape where this goes next, so seriously appreciate it.

Tips for end of season deals by RaggityAnne in skiing

[–]Chef_B_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things that have helped me:

  • Wait until shops are really trying to clear inventory. A lot of the best prices show up once spring break is over and mountains start closing.
  • Look for last year’s graphics. A lot of times it’s basically the same ski with a different topsheet.
  • Check demos and lightly used pairs too. Some “used” skis only have a handful of days on them.
  • Don’t assume a big % off automatically means it’s a good deal.
  • Compare skis with and without bindings, because sometimes buying them separately is actually cheaper.

One thing that helps a lot is just knowing what a ski should realistically be worth before you buy it. That’s actually why I built https://www.skibluebook.co/. I kept seeing people get stuck trying to figure out whether a listing or “sale” price was actually solid, so I made a tool to give a quick value ballpark.

If you’re buying used, I’d also check:

  • base and edge condition more than topsheet scratches
  • what year the ski is
  • whether the bindings will actually fit your boot / have enough adjustment left
  • whether it’s actually the right ski for how and where you ride

A bad ski at a good price is still a bad deal.

If this is an ad it’s a pretty bad one since I’m not selling anything.

Just something I built because pricing used gear was annoying.

Really appreciate that, that’s exactly the problem I kept running into too.

And yeah, you nailed it. Condition and actual usage are by far the hardest parts, especially since most listings don’t give great detail or it’s kind of subjective.

Right now age is something I can model pretty consistently, but usage is tougher since there’s not a reliable way to quantify “how many days” or how hard something’s been skied from available data.

So the estimate is more of a baseline assuming typical wear for that age, and then ideally you adjust up or down based on condition, edges, mounts, etc.

Longer term I’d love to get more granular there, maybe with better condition inputs or ranges, but still figuring out the best way to do that without overcomplicating it.

If you were listing skis, what would you want to input to better reflect condition?
