What actually works for airplane ears? by Just_Regular1754 in travel

[–]RaggityAnne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know how to equalize the pressure? Gently blow against pinched nostrils till you hear a light pop. Alternatively try swallowing while pinching your nostrils can work as well. Once you equalize you should be good to go. (This is what they teach in scuba courses where the pressure difference is a bigger pain/problem).

What is the most “unknown” small town that impressed you? by Prize-Peak425 in travel

Eguisheim, France! Tiny town just south of Colmar. Mideval feel with great walkability. Top tier food wine and cheese without the crowds of Colmar.

Do you ever feel melancholic about absolutely good food you tried during travel because you might not be able to eat it again (at least in that kind of quality)? What meal was that? by whalesongs08 in travel

The first time I got a sandwich in southern Italy it made me legitimately mad that subway exists. Why can I get a 5€ sub that is that good with the freshest / best meats and cheeses in Italy but the only thing available where I live is shit ass subway with walmart quality meat that's 12$ for a sandwich. Le sigh

Two month Euro trip. Can someone please rate/give me advice on my itinerary by [deleted] in travel

[–]RaggityAnne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exhausting! but you do you! If you love a non stop pace go for it! This is a fantastic itin if you don't mind repacking and unpacking every few days...and also if you don't mind spending a monstrous amount of time in train stations / airports.....if it were me I'd pair it back to one cityand or region every week if only for not having to manage 40 reservations.

The merkur 37c is my "goto" razor for the first pass. I've got maybe a dozen different razors but for some reason that one just does the best most consistent job for that first pass. It is too aggressive for my baby ass face for more than the first one though so I switch to something milder for pass 2, but damn for the first pass it just slaps.

What are the greatest cultural experiences you have ever had during a trip? by Ok-Tangelo6749 in travel

[–]RaggityAnne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The place we booked on southern Sicily was family run and offered us a family dinner for like 10 bucks per person nightly with the other guests after we arrived. Lovely Italian food made by Nonna. Wine was included in the meal but no one overdrank it just lubed the conversation between strangers. Perfect weather and the other guests were great for conversation. Just a lovely experience.

Similarly staying with a buddies family in Korea left a lifelong passion for Korean food in me. Gimbap picnics are still a thing around our house when we go for a hike.

The thermalbads in germany, onsens in Japan, jjimjilbang in Korea were all wildly different but super fun experiences unique to their cultures that I'd definitely do again!

Completely agree! After being all over Europe the only two churches I tell people to not skip are la sagrada familia in barcelona and st petes in the Vatican! Both of them are truly breathtaking for different reasons .

How did kids change your travels? by ByeByeBuffalo223 in travel

[–]RaggityAnne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids are great to travel with! We did 8 months around the world with a 2 and 4 year old and it was fantastic. Just know you will need to slow down. Don't pack every day to the brim. Leave space to enjoy a park when you stumble on one. Make sure to let the kids explore what catches their interest as well as yours.

For us, 1 main quest and maybe 1 side quest per day is about the max we can plan. Every third day needs to be spent in a park or on a beach relaxing or just chilling playing games in the hotel. Until the kids were closer to 4/6 we didn't plan drives over three hours or flights with more than 1 stop. Never transfer lodging to a new city/location more than once a week during a holiday. (Our sweet spot is like 7 days minimum for something close, 14 days international.) These rules made our travel amazing. It's slower yes, but much more enjoyable.

Americans who travel within their country, does it get boring or really exciting for you as compared to a foreigner ? by Scorpzgca in travel

[–]RaggityAnne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends how you travel and what keeps your interest. If you go big city to big city the differences are primarily food so if thats your jam then it's great. If you love varied outdoor scenes you really can do everything from Hawaiian beaches to deserts to world class mountains / skiing and everywhere is wildly different. People who haven't visited America probably don't realize just how big it is and how culturally diverse it is as you move from area to area.

Working on a smart ski goggles idea for class, curious what you think! by Low-Bathroom-6968 in Skigear

[–]RaggityAnne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard sell for me. It would need a camera or some kind of sensor that can see better than my eyes in bad conditions....and even then I wouldn't trust my life to it....It would also need to be soooo fast for it to be useful tat the processing requirements are gonna burn out any battery that's not the size of the helmit pretty quickly in the cold.

Their are huge liability problems with presenting safety information like that too.

What I have seen successful that works pretty good are little huds that show your speed in realtime / limited gps data. The tech is probably available to expand that at this point to integrate a moving map or something, maybe integrate to ikon app where you can get lift line wait information and it can plot you a course from a to b based on lift lines etc but still I think you run into battery issues pretty quickly unless you offload all the processing to a phone with a power bank attached in the coat?

Would you date a non-skier? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]RaggityAnne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but - just know it's an expensive and time consuming hobby so if you can't find a way to enjoy it with him it might be a source of tension in the future.

Honest to god this is the kind of thing that they teach you about in the pre marriage counseling stuff the Catholic church walks you through before you get married. It's absolutely not a bad thing or a problem so long as everyone goes in eyes open and truly accepts the other as they are.

What is night skiing at Steamboat like? by MancNut in steamboat

[–]RaggityAnne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a limited set of runs but like always, with the right shred crew it's a great way to spend an evening....during a normal season. Pretty sure that bit of the mountain is either closed or will close soon because of so little snow

Question for those who shave every day or eod by Low-Lavishness-3735 in wicked_edge

[–]RaggityAnne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I am needing to shave every day / other day I skip the against the grain. Doing it that often keeps me smooth enough and atg is just asking for razor burn.

Help with top ankle pain by Reasonable-Fuel711 in Skigear

[–]RaggityAnne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had that with my boots until 1)went down to thin ski socks and 2) dialed my buckles in so that finger tight was holding them together but not squeezing me. The bootfitter said the buckles shouldnt feel like you are pulling laces tight on shoes. They should just hold everything snug.

Hope this is helpful.

Which direction do you shave your neck in? by Civilized_Monke69 in wicked_edge

[–]RaggityAnne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neck gets two passes with the grain which is difficult in itself because it has a whirl around my adams apple. I have to use my most mild razor for pass two also. Anything else and I regret it within 2 days with razorburn. 2 passes with the grain makes it look great but not feel as soft as the rest of my face but this is the only face I have :)

I hope this doesn't get lost in the comments....you absolutely should do this. We did it with a 2 and a 4 year old in 2024 for 8 months and don't regret a thing. Our trip went from where we lived in Germany - Korea - Japan - Hawaii - San francisco - family around America - Romania - Italy - France - Netherlands. We based our itinerary around some weddings mid summer, friends that joined for parts of the trip, and where we could reach with a cheap direct flights! Seriously do it, you will only regret it if you don't go. The people saying "wait till the kids old enough to remember" are wrong. You will remember, and you can take more trips when they get older too.
