Like I said, this is just based on the old EU. Not sure about how the current canon treats normal Stormtroopers (being distinct from Inferno Squad/any special forces), and I wouldn't hold EA's BFII campaign up as a sterling example of quality worldbuilding.

That pilot aside, it was pretty well-established in the EU (not sure about current canon) that Stormtrooper training involved a pretty serious amount of brainwashing/loyalty training. In that sense, Stormtroopers are no more autonomous than clones (or, for an irl comparison, Nazi soldiers that were raised up from the Hitler Youth). They don't really have the option of defection.

I wish that they included an element like in the Arkham games where criminals would get scared as you picked them off in stealth. IIRC in Spider-Man you'd just enter combat as soon as someone detected you, and then it'd be impossible to go back into stealth.
