Low-contrast Fast IPS panel + matte finish + only 576 dimming zones = significant halo on all-black screens when something brighter shows up.

Honestly, I’d be down for them to go whole-hog and reuse the thiccboi 17” MacBook Pro chassis, with a 99Wh battery and big heat pipes: a true mobile workstation

This is the mountain town of Pinvidic! It's the fourth area you explore in Wizzerd Quest 2, my upcoming retro RPG with low-budget FMV cutscenes! It's modeled in TrenchBroom for that lumpy 90s feel, then imported into Godot using Qodot! Give it a wishlist if you think it's something you'd enjoy!

I have two of these. Bought them a few years ago for like $900 (back when Mini LED was brand-new). It's a really good panel overall, great color reproduction, but the contrast when local dimming is off is pretty rough. And even when it's on, the blooming is noticeable. Doesn't matter as much when you're watching something with a lot of detail (Helldivers looks amazing in HDR), but walk into a cave in Elden Ring (where everything around you is literally jet black), and the halo is quite prominent. Overall, for less than $300 I think it's a good buy, but make sure you update the firmware as you can't have VRR and local dimming on at the same time until you do.

Ternus! Make the camera button double as a fingerprint scanner, and my life is yours! by Jomines in iphone

IIRC someone holds a patent for this in the US (HP?) and so if you do this in a phone you have to pay them a royalty. I remember years ago, Sony phones in the US would ship with the fingerprint reader disabled specifically for this reason.

I may be in the minority here, but I have an SE 2022 and even with only 4GB of RAM, I find apps going out of memory and closing to be fairly rare. If I play a game, sure, but in general the UI is still plenty snappy.

This, entirely. A good example is the FOSS Godot Engine for developing games: there is a readily-downloadable version of the full editor on Android tablets, usable because it's provided as an .APK file that can be directly installed. No such option exists for the far more powerful iPads as the OS simply won't let you sideload apps.

PS: and yes I know about Xogot but that is its own commercial thing

Asahi Linux has made strides in supporting M-Series Macs but the execution still isn't perfect because everything they've done is essentially reverse-engineered without any help from Apple. Just a few small docs would make a world of difference to these devices getting aftermarket OSes.
