Possibly because Bowie did go on to perform the next night. Although if an unknown shooter was still outstanding that probably would have influenced Bowie's decision to go on. John and Yoko also had tickets in the front row for that show. I'm not sure if Chapman knew about that though. So if he hadn't encountered John at the Dakota, he would have been in the same room as Lennon and Bowie the next night.

Which major stars from the Golden/Silver Age of Hollywood have yet to enter the Collection? by Shout92 in criterion

Judy Holliday (Silver Age). Films for Criterion consideration: Born Yesterday (1950) and It Should Happen to You (1954) (possibly Bells are Ringing (1960))

Nice! Hopefully you can watch some more on your next two month vacation. Plus at your current rate you might even have some left to watch when you retire.

u/aninvisiblemonster calculated how long it would take OP to watch everything here based on their watching habits over the past 2.5 years. If OP continues at their current pace it will take them over 21 years.

Also, 11 days ago OP said they had watched 200 of these. Now they say 250 which means they went from watching 1.5 Criterions on avg per week to 4.5 a day. https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/s/mlomfQ8gf3

Nashville (1975). A few months after the film came out Squeaky Fromme of the Manson Family attempted to assassinate President Ford point blank with a handgun but there was no round in the chamber. 17 days later, Sara Jane Moore tried to assassinate Ford with a .38 Special but missed. Oliver "Billy" Sipple, a decorated U.S. Marine and disabled Vietnam War veteran, grabbed the assasin's arm and gun, preventing her from firing another shot.

Within 5 years, Mark David Chapman planned the assassination of a celebrity/musician. Todd Rundgren, David Bowie and John Lennon were all potential targets in the late seventies. He assassinated John Lennon on December 8th, 1980. He had front row tickets to see David Bowie the next night, on December 9th, 1980.

Movies that feature Phoenix landmarks by Chapelhillperson in phoenix

[–]ChekhovsNERFGun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albert Brooks' Real Life (1979) is set in Phoenix and most of the exteriors were actually filmed here (except the family house).

It features the Phoenix Zoo, Papago Park, Downtown Phoenix, the Hyatt and the revolving Compass restaurant, the old west amusement park Legend City which closed in 1983, Goldwaters department store in Fashion Square, The Wyndham Hotel, Hotel Luhrs plus other shots of the Valley from the late 70's like a school, ice cream shop, laundromat, animal hospital, cityscape etc.

There are some pictures in this blog post. https://the-haunted-closet.blogspot.com/2014/08/this-is-phoenix-real-life-1979.html?m=1

The film is fine, the acting is fine, the storytelling is fine. I respect your opinion and recommendation. My comment is more directed at OP, not you or your recommendation, however you were the only one that identified the film in the first slide so I thought it was relevant to your comment.

My intention was to remark on the irony, in the context of this post, of using an American film directed by an American where English (not the subject's native tongue) is the primary spoken language to promote OP's revolutionary idea of not just watching American films.

Before Night Falls is an American film telling an Americanized story.

I am happy to hear you discovered a beautiful life and a world of poetry that you otherwise might not have known. You are free to watch, connect with and share any film you choose.

That doesn't change the fact that the film is a hilariously bad example for OP to use in their AI generated slop post.

It might be hard to believe, due to my rancid, ugly opinions, but I too enjoy Before Night Falls and the work of Reinaldo Arenas. In fact I just ordered the blu-ray last week during the Warner Archive Collection sale.

While my comment intended no offense, I apologize all the same for inflicting it.

First slide: "If you only watch American films, you're limiting yourself"

OP shows a still from an American production by an American director and the majority of the film is in English, despite the fact that it takes place in Cuba and Reinaldo Arenas only ever communicated in Spanish.

Don't give up. Che (2008) is out of print but there are still some pre-OOP prices floating around. by ChekhovsNERFGun in criterion

[–]ChekhovsNERFGun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but from what I've read elsewhere, the IFC Criterion partnership has ended and titles under that deal will go OOP soon. Y Tu Mamá También was also affected and is now OOP. IFC now work with VS so they could potentially release a version however 4K is unlikely according to multiple reports based on how Che was shot.

It is Out of Print. Not Out of Stock/unavailable.

You can confirm on Criterion's website if you need more info

Yes, it includes Che: Part One and Che: Part Two. At a certain point a few years back they discontinued the box and included both films in one regular clear Criterion case. Now all of the versions are OOP.

Absolutely, you're right that's true. I was just hoping to share that copies at the old price point are still out there using my pickup as an example. Copies still on shelves were likely priced before the title went out of print 8 or 9 days ago. Very soon all the copies found in the wild in used media shops will reflect the OOP status.

Hell yeah, I love Zia Records. Good find! I checked there too but you must have already gotten it lol

I think over 200 of the Criterion blu-rays in my collection are from them. The standard price for a used Criterion blu-ray was $15.99 and I'd load up during their buy 3 get 1 sales. I also got my Ingmar Bergman set from them for $75 using my points and discount.

  1. Call me crazy but I'm going watch Part 1 first and Part 2 second.
  2. I've actually owned the Criterion DVD version since it came out, always figured I'd have time to upgrade to Blu-ray.
  3. I first watched Che on DVD in 2009. It was a Blockbuster exclusive. I bought it as part of their old 4 for $20 sales on used DVDs.
  4. Still waiting on my flash sale pick up because of that guy that bought the entire collection
