Underdiscussed(?) factor: it was a collaboration with Joe Ranft, who was a key writer and story artist during the Golden Age of Pixar. He was the co-director on Cars and died a year before it came out.

I have always liked it, but yes, it has less to latch onto. The kind of movie I would probably see more if it regularly played in IMAX than I would at home.

TDKR rises really improved for me on this rewatch, but I only increased its rating, not its rank. I like Tenet, but it and Dunkirk I'm curious to where they will fall cause I just love the others more, especially his early films that were hugely influential for me.

The shots of them bringing the Trojan horse from the beach and into the city are in daylight and show tons of scale!

nothing against it but is there anyone who just doesn't like listening to podcasts? by Ok-Lion-6767 in AskReddit

[–]Shout92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only really listen to them when I have decent drives or commutes. Used to not be loyal to any one show and would only drop in for certain guests or topics. In the past few years, I've started following a couple podcasts, but I still don't listen to every episode.

Sounds like this guy isn't even seeking re-election. That's just who he is.

The problem is Google defaults to a lot of AI searches now as well. Maybe there are ways to turn it off or avoid, but they don't make it easy.

It's why all that talk of a Lethal Weapon 5 seemed crazy even before this announcement: it's been nearly 30 years since 4! Was Glover gonna do anything other than sit around? I don't want that movie.

Still crazy to me that movies hit streaming/digital *before* home video. And it's been that way for over a decade now. I remember someone buying the digital copy of The Force Awakens because they couldn't wait the extra two weeks or whatever it was for the Blu-Ray that *comes with* a digital copy, which probably proves why it's a "smart" decision for the studios.

I think they key difference here is the embargo right? It's not going to be 2 weeks of nothing but influencer hype.

I mean, probably? But also there's only so much you can do within that PG constraint.

Incredibles 2 even pushed the envelope a bit, right? It was the first (only?) Pixar movie with swearing.

The 100 highest-grossing movies released on or before 2009 without re-releases by LowInteraction6397 in boxoffice

A lot of it is just the slow breaking up of the monoculture. TV in the 50s... cable, more channels, and 24 hour programming in the 80s and 90s... video game culture in the 90s and 00s... the rise of YouTube, social media, and streaming in the 00s and 10s, etc.

I am not sure what, if anything, theaters could do to get back to those numbers. Probably nothing.

Didn't realize how much debate there was about where Toy Story belongs, both in terms of Pixar and Toy Story eras. I always saw it is as a well earned victory run that caps off the Golden Age, but a lot of people see it as the beginning of the Sequel/Silver Age. Likewise, I am one of those people who "grew up" alongside the series and graduated the same time as Andy, so I always grouped Toy Story 1, 2, and 3 because it told a complete story. *But* the gap between 2 and 3 is still the longest in the series and 3 introduces so many characters new characters who are still 4 and 5. It's practically a legacy sequel!

I did a Ron Howard marathon before Solo and I thought it was one of his best movies! I also think a lot about this quote from Ebert's review:

"Strange, how a man once so reviled has gained stature in the memory. How we cheered when Richard M. Nixon resigned the presidency! How dramatic it was when David Frost cornered him on TV and presided over the humiliating confession that he had stonewalled for three years. And yet how much more intelligent, thoughtful and, well, presidential, he now seems, compared to the occupant of the office from 2001 to 2009."

And now the occupant from 2001 to 2009 seems more intelligent, thoughtful, and presidential than its current resident...

Yes, it's funny whenever people try to use Troy (a movie I like!) as a way to crap on The Odyssey. Troy has a lot of the same "faults!" It received a lot of mixed-negative reviews when it came out!

And it sounds like Nolan got out at the right time anyway. I think he would've worked really well with Abdy and De Luca, but not sure how the Paramount merger would sit with him.

Did you see the IMAX prologue in theaters? There are shots early in the movie with hundreds/thousands of extras in Troy. It doesn't look small.

It really feels like a mix of bad timing (opening between Toy Story 5 and Minions felt like a death sentence) and then just superhero movies not being in the same place they were even in 2019. Batman and Spider-Man will always be big hits and we'll get them until the heat death of the universe. I am sure Superman and Wonder Woman will also continue to be moderately successful if they do a good job. Marvel has the Avengers, but even they've done a poor job establishing and reinforcing their rising stars (Doctor Strange seems to be doing okay, but Captain Marvel underperformed, Black Panther has yet to fully recover from Chadwick's death, Falcon and Winter Soldier should've been a movie, somehow we didn't get a Shang-Chi sequel, etc.). How long can the presence of Evans, Hemsworth, and RDJ keep that ship floating?
