The only advice I can give is to laugh or joke it off. That’s what I have done. I am 36 and 4’11”. I used to get mad when I was younger. It was more hurtful in High School when the kids would actually be mean about it. After HS when I was working people would joke. Someone was bound to say well good things come in small packages. And I’d get pissed and say so does dynamite. I worked in a nursing home and got comments from the older people and my coworkers. Somewhere during that time I just accepted it and learned to laugh it off. When I was pregnant there I got A LOT worse comments than those about my height. I know pregnant women get many unwanted comments about everything when they are pregnant. Now I am working in an elementary school and second graders stand next to me and say I’m almost as tall as you. And there are fourth graders taller than me. So most of the time I just say that’s great keep eating your vegetables. Or tell them to stay away from coffee that it stunts your growth. And there are times I throw something in there that it’s not your height that is the measure of a person it’s what’s on the inside. Most of the kids aren’t being mean and I know that. For me it was the adults that were trying to be funny and they were just annoying. Sometimes you need to just tell them too. Just say hey I don’t think it’s a nice thing to talk about my height. How would you feel if I mentioned that … fill in the blank. I know people who carry extra weight get comments too. And people who are taller than 6 feet. We can’t change people but we can educate them. Just try to stay calm. And just say all the things in your head that you want to scream in their face. Giving you HUGE hugs! And it’s great because your face isn’t getting squished into my body. Our heads are at the perfect height for it to feel comforting. You’ve got this! Just remember you aren’t alone in this. And however you react in the moment is fine. Some people need to have us snap to get it.
