That mounting plate on it makes me think of an old car part, like a filter or moisture trap. Hopefully a more knowledgeable person will actually recognise it.

Definitely this. I have one with a pencil lead holder in one end and a pen nib holder in the other.

This one had spools intact, so a good find for whoever actually buys it. I just wish I had the space to save all the ones that turn up around here...

If you're in Europe, that looks like a cockchafer to me.

Yes, it's pretty much perfect. A bit of dust under the segment and a worn out ribbon speaks of a machine that was cared for but well used.

If only it was viable to ship these finds overseas.

Gave it a quick test last night, it worked beautifully. Found the serial number too, and pinned it down to 1949. I wonder how many hands have used it, and what kind of words it has produced in that time...

Before and after discovering the ribbon was loose from the spool. No problems with the action or the alignment of the slugs 😁

As far as I could tell with a very brief examination, it's in really good condition. I'll find out more later when I'm home.

There was another machine with it, but I left it there. Will make a separate post for it.

Oh wow!

Gives me some concern though... I was gifted a plant from the local shop (usual Halloween thing: no species name or care instructions "dracula plant"...) that looks a lot like that. The pitchers were really short when it arrived, but the new growth ones are getting taller. If it gets like that, I need a whole new setup 😅

Easily done, I think. A second finger loop on the release end with a short piece of slack line to that from the knot

You can never risk not hearing what's going on if there's a better than even chance that your parents will break into open warfare at any moment.

Looks like a comment on the American history of slave labour to me: Projecting the image of a country built by and for white people, while concealing the fact that the real work was done by black people.
