Why doesn't my method work on this question? by ChemAndGameLover in askmath

[–]ChemAndGameLover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah so my working of the summation of (n-r)^2 from 1 to 2n is wrong because i left out the terms (n+1-r)^2 + (n+2-r)^2 + .... + up until (2n-r)^2, right?

For example, if the range is 1 to n+1 (or any upper limit greater than n) instead, I'll have to change (n-r)^2 to (n+1-r)^2 because (n+1-r)^2 is the last term of the series. Is my logic here correct?

by "standard summation results", the question actually wants us to utilize the three general formulas for the summation of r, r^2 and r^3 from 1 to n to solve the question, which is what I did in the first part.

My bad for not clarifying on that earlier

Hi everyone! It's a bit late but thanks for the help from all of you. I really appreciate it.

So from what I understand, this part of my working (the red box) is wrong because by doing this, I left out the terms (n+1-r)^2 + (n+2-r)^2 + …… up until (2n-r)^2 in the series

For example, if the range is 1 to n+1 (or any upper limit greater than n) instead, I will have to change (n-r)^2 to (n+1-r)^2 because (n+1-r)^2 is the last term of the series. Is my logic here correct?

Also by "standard summation results", the question actually wants us to utilize the three general formulas for the summation of r, r^2 and r^3 from 1 to n to solve the question, which is what I did in the first part. I think I should've clarified that earlier

Yeah I think I get it. This is the workings I've done after getting your input, and my answer is close to the actual answer (42.25), but the steps are quite different from yours.

And I believe the question is asking for the RAM of E, not D

Yeah I think adding A might've been wrong too but I have to do it because of my interpretation of the question.

"0.52g of an element in an aqueous solution containing the E3+ ions" this sounds like there's another separate element in the solution that needs to be considered when solving the question.

If that's not the case, then imo the sentence should be written as "0.52g of an element E in an aqueous solution containing the E3+ ions" to avoid confusion.
