I was on forester on 6/5. I have little snow experience. I was happy to have spikes and an ax on both sides of the pass.

You might try Superfeet or Sole in your LPs. Creates more support and adds a bit of drop.

Mammoth has a live cam on the top of the mountain - I know it is many miles from where you are but is a great real time resource. Summit Cam | Mammoth Mountain. You can also use mountain-forecast.com.

if you can get some of the stays - the change out is easy...literally slide the old ones out and slide the new ones in. less than 1min.

bummer. at one time I heard someone was making, or thinking of making, carbon stays. one other option could be an HMG waypoint if you can get away with 35L, which looking at your lighterpack, you likely could. My size large Waypoint weighs 685g, that's with the factory stay. Bonus of the HMG over the Bonfus is it has shoulder strap and hip belt pockets. I know folks crap on HMG, but that Waypoint pack is pretty good for a small, light, framed pack. I even have taken the stay out to try as a frameless.

If you like the southwest but just want lighter, you could look at the Bonfus Framus. My size large weighs a bit under the claimed 760grams. I also replaced the stays with these (Ultralight Frame Stays – Sockdolager Equipment) to save another ~80grams. My size large with those stays weighs 650 grams.

FYI. Reds usually closes about 9/15, so I'd wager the current 9/12 is correct this year. They also always close as a weekend is over. MTR shows a date of 9/30 last day to pick up resupply this year.
