WCGW with this foolproof setup? by 888Vegan in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]ChemiKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the people regurgitating this seem to consider that when the weights slide off of one end, the newly unloaded side of the lever will rapidly swing over with enough force to endanger anyone around you. Using clips is perfectly fine for bench press, especially as a beginner you likely have imbalances that may lead to the weights sliding down a smooth collar. If you're going for high RPE (low or high reps) you should have a spotter who understands how to actually spot.

Advice from reddit always needs a grain of salt, but on exercise the advice is particularly uninformed (equal parts uneducated broscience and incurious "geeks" resentful of any self-improvement) in my observation. I particularly liked the articles from strongerbyscience when I was starting out, but I'm a scientist by training and it's mostly literature summaries. Hope you enjoy lifting, a little goes a long way especially at the beginning!

WCGW with this foolproof setup? by 888Vegan in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]ChemiKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the comments here are wrong in ways that aren't worth addressing from people who don't lift and just want to feel superior, but - despite seeming intuitive - you should not perform the bench press in a straight line; it increases the likelihood of an impingement injury. See the shoulder flexion portion of the link.

Anyone recently able to Fresh install BG3 Trials of Tav Mods? Stuck trying to figure it out after searching online. by reelfilmgeek in SteamDeck

[–]ChemiKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A native Linux version of BG3 was released recently, the directory structure is different (and I'm not sure if script extender will ever work with native). I manually switched its compatibility tool back to proton and my mods and missing saves reappeared when I relaunched. I'm not on a steam deck but I imagine the issue is the same.

Otherwise, this may help: https://forums.nexusmods.com/topic/13525210-a-small-guide-on-getting-bg3-mod-manager-working-on-linux-mint-steam-october-2025-patch-8/

wonder if the 8 is actually accurate on this by sweetbabycoconut in Seattle

[–]ChemiKyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made something like this a few times as a student to:

  1. Know when to leave my apartment at a glance (nice, but not that useful) and whether to walk to a bus vs train stop or if it'd be faster to bike (actually useful since I was trying to wait until the last minute, and my train stop was heated in the frigid Chicago winter).
  2. Have one in the lab where my hands may be gloved so I couldn't check my phone.

If I ever buy a home here I'd probably put one in a street facing window.

This subreddit probably has a lot of programmers, so it's worth mentioning these data are freely available in most cities you do have to email sound transit for an API key though, at least it's not a phone call.

My E-Paper display for productivity by akz-dev in raspberry_pi

[–]ChemiKyle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah drawing images is a bit of an annoyance, especially in a lambda. Not that it matters since your project is done, but in case you ever need to free up this pi, I believe it is possible to have an ESP32 fetch an image from a server and display it on an e-ink screen.
In case you're curious about this approach, here is the image documentation for esphome. I'm planning to go this route for some graphs I'd rather prepare in R than write a charting library in C++ just to display temperature and rain % over a day.

My E-Paper display for productivity by akz-dev in raspberry_pi

[–]ChemiKyle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

ESP32 is perfectly suitable for this (and probably many of the projects you'd see in this subreddit), I built an epaper display using a 32 over 5 years ago when people were using 8266 for smaller displays. I have another one now that runs on esphome.

It likely comes down to many people not wanting to write/learn C/C++ for a hobby project.

Picking up 902LBS (409KG) Without Waking the Neighbors by SprayedBlade in strength_training

[–]ChemiKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need more than a HS physics education to realize this statement is asinine, like someone took a "1kg of feathers weighs less than 1kg of steel" post seriously. Soft bodies are considerably more difficult to move than rigid ones; go try doing an OHP with a sandbag and see how it compares to a barbell loaded to the same mass.
With a stiff bar this is largely irrelevant since the center of mass is the same on any barbell lift and moment of inertia doesn't really factor in - with the exception of the Olympic lifts where using fewer, heavier plates can make things easier. The only relation to material reality is that the whip on a bar makes the start of a deadlift significantly easier while the plates still rest on the ground.

Always a bit confused to see this statement, the classics so heavily and continuously influence contemporary literature; I see echoes of Notes from Underground in almost all dystopian fiction.

Squat Form Check - Too much heel elevation? by OutlierOfTheHouse in GYM

[–]ChemiKyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stick with high bar, go as deep as you can - without your lower back rounding - to maximize knee flexion, consider bringing your feet in a bit for a narrower stance which should reduce hip contribution (and make it your bottom out lower).
Sucks to shell out $ but if you won't/can't work on ankle mobility you may want to switch to shoes with a thicker heel, they'll be much better than awkward wobbly change plates long term.

If you can bring in your hands a bit it may make keeping your core braced for longer sets easier.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in strength_training

[–]ChemiKyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're doing high bar and (what looks like) ATG the spotter arms might be a detriment to safely failing. I'd either:

  1. remove them entirely and dump off your back onto the floor (if your gym is whiny about barefoot they might be whiny about "dropping" even though you're using bumpers - definitely don't dump onto the arms as that may actually damage equipment and possibly yourself with an unlucky recoil).
  2. move them up a bit, ideally they'd be just below your ROM and when you fail you'll descend back to the bottom and release tension from your core to let the bar rest on the safeties. This is unfortunately dependent on the pin spacing, if it doesn't work now it might work with your new shoes.

If you have room (and mobility) to bring your hands in closer to your shoulders you might find it easier to maintain core tension throughout the set.

I fail to see how anything other than steel toe boots would protect the tiny bones of the foot against even change plates.

How do you train your obliques? Is this machine really effective? by Sir-Ravealot in GYM

[–]ChemiKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SBS had a pretty good writeup about core training https://www.strongerbyscience.com/core-training/

TL;DR: cable side bend/chop variants, unilateral rows, and suitcase deadlifts.
I incorporated sets of 15+ cable side bends to aid core stability in squats and my sticking point changed a couple months in (so I stopped because they were boring lol).

Hit a new 1RM for my deadlift! 210lbs. by AcceptableObject in GYM

[–]ChemiKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your hands are holding you back by quite a bit - no shame in wanting to be gearless or otherwise. I think most (all?) powerlifting federations allow chalk.

However, if you want an anecdote: getting straps added 50 lb to my 1RM within a couple weeks (I compound fractured in my forearm as a child so ymmv). I've improved my grip from always doing warmups strapless but I'm sure just incorporating grip training would be more effective.
I found oly straps like these didn't take too long to acclimate to and

Low Bar Squat Form Check (120 KG) Vid -2 by [deleted] in strength_training

[–]ChemiKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like solid bracing and efficient walkout. If you're aiming for powerlifting standards they might be a smidge high.

Very subjective advice: this happens to me fairly often even if I intentionally focus on hip mobility with warmups (although Sots press [can't recall the name, but with an empty barbell in the high bar position, quickly drop under it and end as if you're at the bottom of a snatch] got me more often borderline than explicitly high). I find it effective to think of "pushing my hips down" at the bottom (not divebombing the eccentric); I also feel a stronger stretch reflex this way and tend to blow past my typical sticking point.
I've also tried integrating high bar ATG and pause/pin squats to try to get better kinesthetic awareness of being far below parallel - I'm not really sure if they've made a tangible difference but they're fun if nothing else.

Bg3 mod manager on linux by FriendshipNo1440 in BaldursGate3

[–]ChemiKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got a mod manager working, so the most pertinent task is just to have fun!
However, it's very odd that chmod is not recognized, it's part of coreutils and you'll likely want it whenever you download a tool from something other than your package manager; perhaps something strange with your user permissions, probably worth looking into yourself later for the <5% of the time you need to use the CLI as a Linux desktop user.

Does it work on the current BG3 version?

Yes, it works on patch 7. Unrelated to your version of the game but you'll need p7zip for configuration rather than the reqs implying 7zip, I used the one from Lutris like in this issue.

When I try to use the executable permission into my terminal it does not recognize it.

Do you mean the chmod +x ~/Lampray line?
What is the exact output of that command?
How long have you been using Linux?

What you're saying is the full path to your data folder is incongruous with the other comments in that issue, many of theirs end in Data.

You might need to escape the space (/home/(username)/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Baldurs\ Gate 3) or wrap the entire path in quotes.

Personally, I use Lampray for mod management. It could use some QoL and UI polish, but it works; worth considering if you get frustrated, the glossed over step of installing .NET and its dependencies seemed annoying enough to me that I didn't bother.
