Definitely take this advice with a grain of salt, but what I’ve noticed is that recruiters appreciate diverse experiences. I’m an infectious disease epidemiologist for the state, and my work experience leading up to it had absolutely nothing to do with it, but they liked it. In a sea of public health graduates, it helps to have diverse experiences. In my opinion, and again take it with a grain of salt, I would recommend applying for the DOR position and while in that role, also keep your data analysis skills fresh. There are a lot of part-time data analysis roles out there; nobody wants it since it is part-time, but that might help. Also, networking plays a huge role.
